Aesthetics And Naturalism In The Five Valencian Novels Of Vicente Blasco IbáÑEz., Gilbert B. Heartfield Aug 1991

Aesthetics And Naturalism In The Five Valencian Novels Of Vicente Blasco IbáÑEz., Gilbert B. Heartfield

Foreign Languages & Literatures ETDs

Vicente Blasco Ibáñez, considered one of the foremost Spanish naturalistic authors, wrote between 1894 and 1928. He is best known for his first group of novels, the Valencian series (1894-1902), which represent his most naturalistic period. Little critical investigation has been made regarding the aesthetical qualities of these novels. Most research considers either the biographical, historical or scientific approach or arrives at conclusions without demonstrating sufficient analysis. Discussion of the novelist’s artistry is usually superficial or vague. This study, therefore, will deal with the relationship between aesthetic and naturalistic elements found in the five Valencian novels. It will consist of …

Wreath-Laying In The George Eliot Memorial Gardens, Nuneaton Jun 1991

Wreath-Laying In The George Eliot Memorial Gardens, Nuneaton

The George Eliot Review Online, ISSN: 2831-5375

We are here this morning to remember a great English novelist, and one of the most formidable intellectuals of her day. It is appropriate that we should do so in Nuneaton, close to South Farm, Arbury, where Mary Ann Evans was born, and also close to Griff, where she grew up. It is right, too, that I should say Mary Ann Evans, for this was her birthplace; the birth of 'George Eliot' took place elsewhere.

But why, it might be asked, should we honour a writer at her place of birth when her adult life, and more importantly, her entire …

The Poetics Of Authorship In The Later Middle Ages: The Emergence Of The Modern Literary Persona, Burt Joseph Kimmelman May 1991

The Poetics Of Authorship In The Later Middle Ages: The Emergence Of The Modern Literary Persona, Burt Joseph Kimmelman

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Literary individualism manifested itself in the twelfth century both trivially and profoundly. Word puzzles and overt self-naming within a literary work, and discussions of the nature of poetry and the role of the poet in the world, increasingly considered the purpose and efficacy of writing and ultimately of language per se. Poets asserted themselves in their works not so much for the sake of self-promotion, in a modern sense, but to address and modulate contemporary intellectual and spiritual issues. Speculative grammar, nominalism and realism, often provided the material for poets such as Guillem IX, Marcabru, Dante, Chaucer and Langland. As …

Buchi Emecheta : A Novelist's Image Of Nigerian Women, Kirstin Lynne Ellsworth Mar 1991

Buchi Emecheta : A Novelist's Image Of Nigerian Women, Kirstin Lynne Ellsworth

Undergraduate Honors Thesis Collection

Nigerian novelist Buchi Emecheta writes about the lives of twentieth century Nigerian women. Living during the post-World War II decades of British colonialism, and the subsequent move towards Nigerian Independence in the 1950s, Emecheta's women are affected by some of the most dramatic social and cultural changes in their country's history. Colonialism brings with it abrupt changes in the degree of political power held by Nigerians in their own country, and fosters the urbanization and expansion of market centers like Lagos, based on exploitative systems of raw material extraction for the colonial power. Imposing an increasingly western sensibility on Nigeria, …

George Eliot Fellowship Annual General Meeting- Treasurer's Report Mar 1991

George Eliot Fellowship Annual General Meeting- Treasurer's Report

The George Eliot Review Online, ISSN: 2831-5375

From a financial point of view 1990 was an uneventful year with no major items of expenditure. Income from subscriptions showed a small increase over 1989 whereas that from donations was considerably less. This is because, you will recall, in 1989 we made a special appeal to Life Members to which they responded magnificently leading to an exceptionally large "Donation" income in that year.

Of our functions, the Gabriel Woolf readings once again showed an increase in profit but unfortunately the Diamond Jubilee Evening showed a loss. Souvenir Sales gave a healthy profit with the mini-statue of George Eliot and …

Mythological Lovers In Chaucer's Troilus And Criseyde, Katherine Heinrichs Jan 1991

Mythological Lovers In Chaucer's Troilus And Criseyde, Katherine Heinrichs

Quidditas

Chaucer's Troilus and Criseyde is often criticized by modern scholars for the abruptness of its epilogue rejecting earthly love. Paull Baum objects that the moral of the epilogue is not, in fact, the moral of the tale and suggests that Chaucer might better have concluded in the manner of the stilnovisti, with Criseyde as a transfigured "gloriosa donna." J. S. P. Tatlock protests that "the feeling of the Epilog is in no way foreshadowed at the beginning or elsewhere; it does not illumine or modify; it contradicts. The heartfelt worldly tale is interpreted in an unworldly sense." He is …

Marginality As Women's Freedom: The Case Of Floripe, Marian Rothstein Jan 1991

Marginality As Women's Freedom: The Case Of Floripe, Marian Rothstein

Quidditas

When Jean Bagnyon chose to rewrite Fierabras for his contemporaries at the dawn of the printed book, strong fictional women who participated in their own name in the world, women not limited to domestic, advisory, or intercessory functions, were rare. Their scarcity did not end then. The interest of what follows must lie, at least in part, beyond Bagnyon's text and beyond Floripe herself. The purpose of subjecting the case of Floripe (sister of Fierabras) to close reading is in part to understand how this example of an active woman functions. My scrutiny of this text is also intended to …

From Campus To Campus: English University Life And The Renaissance Pastoral, Gary M. Bouchard Jan 1991

From Campus To Campus: English University Life And The Renaissance Pastoral, Gary M. Bouchard

Quidditas

Literary critics have relied increasingly upon what we know of the particular goings-on at the court of Queen Elizabeth to explain all things we call Elizabethan, including a vast corpus of poetry. Pastoral poetry in particular, long regarded as an allegorical embodiment of court politics, is seen now more than ever as a product of social and political power struggles. I argue instead that the pastoral poetry of Renaissance England has to do with the academic world as much as, if not more than, with the ancillary world of the court, it was born of the academy, where Edmund Spenser …
