The Myth Of The Persecuted Female Healer, Jane P. Davidson
The Myth Of The Persecuted Female Healer, Jane P. Davidson
Quidditas
The idea that most women condemned as witches during the classic periods of witch persecution in Europe (between 1500 and 1700) were in actuality unlicensed healers who were suppressed by the male medical establishment arose among feminist writers, historians, and religious leaders. This idea has been around for more than twenty years now and has become a familiar strain in women's studies. It has been presented often as historically valid by scholars of both genders. The theory is that the midwife, the 'cunning woman', and the female folk herbalist were condemned as witches by male physicians in order to keep …

Sheltering The Homeless: Hospitals In Medieval Catalonia, James W. Brodman
Sheltering The Homeless: Hospitals In Medieval Catalonia, James W. Brodman
Quidditas
Shelter for the temporarily homeless, whether or not they were needy in the modern sense, was as typical a charity in the tons and villages of medieval Europe as was providing food for the hungry. The Rule of St Benedict, as well as local Hispanic customs, imposed the obligation of hospitality upon monasteries, and likewise the growing towns of the eleventh and twelfth centuries saw the need to provide beds for those who were not householders. Those served were a diverse lot: pilgrims wending their way to shrine like Santiago, clergy and others in town on business, wandering beggars and …
The Experience Of The Black Death In Bologna As Revealed By The Notarial Registers, Shona Kelly Wray
The Experience Of The Black Death In Bologna As Revealed By The Notarial Registers, Shona Kelly Wray
Quidditas
The Black Death of 1348 has fascinated readers and scholars for centuries. In this century it has been the subject of innumerable debates. Historians have argued back and forth about the demographic effects of the plague, about whether or not it instigated a period of economic depression, or even whether it represented a major event in history. Similarly, disagreement has raged, both inside and outside of the historical discipline, about the medical history and epidemiology of the plague. Fewer studies, however, have focused on the more immediate effects of the plague in localized areas. These scholars have attempted to uncover …
Spenser The Borderer: Boundary, Property, Identity In A View Of The Present State Of Ireland And Book 6 Of The Faerie Queene, Eva Gold
Quidditas
In 1581[–82], Lodowick Bryskett wrote to Sir Francis Walsingham about giving up his position as an administrator to take up the 'perillous' life of a 'borderer', one who sought social and financial 'securitie' from land on the borders of English settlements in Ireland: 'I meane to make proofe (God willing) whether the lyfe of a borderer in this land be a lyke perillous vnto all men, and to see if a just and honest simple lyfe, may not even among the most Barbarous people of the world breede securitie to him that shall live nere them or emong them'. Inventing The Middle Ages, Glenn W. Olsen
Inventing The Middle Ages, Glenn W. Olsen
Quidditas
Norman Cantor seems to have decided, as a kind of perpetual outsider (in spite of his Princeton and Oxford education), that he has nothing to lose by telling it all. Of his Inventing the Middle Ages: The Lives, Works, and Ideas of the Great Medievalists of the Twentieth Century (William Morrow and Company, New York 1991), Lee Patterson says accurately on the dust jacket: 'Intriguing, informative, irritating, and vastly entertaining, Inventing the Middle Ages will rattle lots of cages'. I am not sure that this book has raised Cantor's status in the eyes of very many practicing medievalists, and indeed …

Review Of George Eliot: Ihr Leben, John Rignall
Review Of George Eliot: Ihr Leben, John Rignall
The George Eliot Review Online, ISSN: 2831-5375
In the epilogue to her life of George Eliot Elsemarie Maletzke pays tribute to the work of Gordon S. Haight and states that biographers who have come after him have found nothing really new to add beyond a more critical assessment of Eliot's person. The statement is true at least of this biography, which makes no claims to new findings and which follows Haight closely, often to the point of citing the same passages from letters or journals, while at the same time adopting an altogether less respectful and more critical attitude towards its subject. Where Haight reports without comment …
George Eliot To William Blackwood Iii: Two Unpublished Letters, David Finkelstein
George Eliot To William Blackwood Iii: Two Unpublished Letters, David Finkelstein
The George Eliot Review Online, ISSN: 2831-5375
George Eliot's business and personal relations with John Blackwood, head of the Edinburgh publishing firm William Blackwood & Sons from 1852-1879, have been well documented in Gordon Haight's detailed biographical study and his edition of her letters. On John's death in 1879, his nephew William Blackwood III took over the running of the firm, and continued maintaining close business and personal contact with George Eliot until her death on 22 December 1880. Two unpublished letters relating to the death of William' s brother George Frederick Blackwood, found in MS. 30,039 of the Blackwood files in the National Library of Scotland, …
Metaphor, Truth And The Mobile Imagination In The Mill On The Floss, John Rignall
Metaphor, Truth And The Mobile Imagination In The Mill On The Floss, John Rignall
The George Eliot Review Online, ISSN: 2831-5375
The relationship, and conflict, between brother and sister that lies at the heart of The Mill on the Floss involves not only important differences of character and gender, but also radically different modes of thought and expression. The contrast between narrow- minded Tom and large-souled Maggie is, among other things, a contrast between different forms of knowledge and different ways of using language. For Tom, with his 'conscious rectitude of purpose' and 'narrowness of imagination and intellect', 1 knowledge is unquestioning, unhesitating, and immune to doubt. No shadow of epistemological uncertainty dims the harsh light by which he sees and …
A Note On Hermione In Daniel Deronda, Derek Miller
A Note On Hermione In Daniel Deronda, Derek Miller
The George Eliot Review Online, ISSN: 2831-5375
After a paragraph in which the narrator sympathetically examines Rex's love for his cousin Gwendolen, the young people plan a tableau vivant at Offendene. Gwendolen rejects Rex's suggestion of himself as Achilles, with Gwendolen as Briseis, then agrees with his next idea that she should be Hermione as the statue, and he Leontes, from The Winter's Tale. During the playing of this scene, and provoked. perhaps. by the 'thunderous chord' (91)1 struck by Herr Klesmer on the piano. the panel on the wall opens to disclose what the family saw on the day of their moving in, 'the picture of …
