James Shirley's The Politician And The Demand For Responsible Government In The Court Of Charles I, James R. Keller

Quidditas

On 13 June 1629, Dr. Lamb, a person physician and astrologer to the duke of Buckingham, while strolling down a London street was attacked by an angry mob and beaten to death. When he first noticed the crowd gathering, he summoned a group of sailors to guard him. However, incensed by years of arbitrary government, economic hardship, and war, the mob pursued Lamb with the intention of making his death an example for the duke; they called him "the Duke's Devil." As Lamb made his way toward a local tavern, the ever-increasing pack began to pummel him with stones, and …

Hrotswitha Of Gandersheim's Dulcitius And Callimachus In A New Translation, Mark L. Damen Jan 1997

Hrotswitha Of Gandersheim's Dulcitius And Callimachus In A New Translation, Mark L. Damen

Quidditas

Even without external corroborating evidence, we may infer from her works that the nun Hrotswitha (Hrotsvit in Saxon) lived in Saxony during the second half of the tenth century. Because she seems to have had considerable freedom of movement and expression for a woman at that time, writing about worldly affairs evidently with some personal knowledge of them, she was most likely a canoness, that is, not fully cloistered. She must have visited the courts of the Saxon kings, probably more than once, since she chronicles their exploits and composes poetry of a type briefly popularized by a scholar in …

Metaphors And Similes For Yahweh In Hosea 14:2-9 (1-8) : A Study Of Hoseanic Pictorial Language, Bernhard Oestreich Jan 1997

Metaphors And Similes For Yahweh In Hosea 14:2-9 (1-8) : A Study Of Hoseanic Pictorial Language, Bernhard Oestreich

Dissertations

Problem.

Compared with the effort to interpret other parts of the book of Hosea, especially the first three chapters, the final chapter has been rather neglected. Additionally, the variety of explanations offered for certain biblical images in Hos 14 indicates a necessity to clarify the methods of interpretation of biblical metaphorical language.

Method.

Chapter 1 clarifies the theory of metaphors on which the study is based.

Chapter 2 determines the limitation and the structure of the passage Hos 2:2-9 (Eng. 1-8). In chapters 3 to 6 the metaphors and similes of this passage which refer to Yahweh, i.e., "healing," "loving," …

Address At The Unveiling Of John Letts's Statue Of George Eliot At The George Eliot Hospital, Kathleen Adams Aug 1996

Address At The Unveiling Of John Letts's Statue Of George Eliot At The George Eliot Hospital, Kathleen Adams

The George Eliot Review Online, ISSN: 2831-5375

This is, of course, the second time many of us have attended the unveiling of a statue of George Eliot. The last time was in 1986 and John, I know, will remember what an exciting time that was. Even before the unveiling we had met in Newdegate Square to await her arrival from the foundry. She arrived on the back of a lorry, almost as though she had thumbed a lift up from High Wycombe. When she was unveiled by our President she shone like a new penny.

From that day on I have wished that the George Eliot Hospital …

Wreath-Laying In Poet's Corner, Westminster Abbey, Graham Handley

The George Eliot Review Online, ISSN: 2831-5375

It has always seemed to me, and doubtless to many others, that some of the most moving and evocative words ever written by George Eliot occur near the beginning of the third chapter of her last novel, Daniel Deronda:

A human life, I think, should be well rooted in some spot of native land, where it may get the love of tender kinship for the face of earth, for the labours men go forth to, for the sounds and accents that haunt it, for whatever will give that early home a familiar unmistakable difference amidst the future widening of knowledge; …

Wreath-Laying In The George Eliot Memorial Garden, Nuneaton, Marjorie Bruce

The George Eliot Review Online, ISSN: 2831-5375

Yesterday evening Pat Williams and I much enjoyed performing our recital based on George Eliot's words and on her concert-going and home musical entertainment experiences. Usually a recital programme of this kind is given once and never heard again (as is the case with most concerts). Performers in opera, and even more in musicals, will have the pleasure, which may eventually turn into the pain, of reproducing the same performance over and over again. Can they, like Browning's wise thrush, repeat their first fine careless rapture? The cry of encore at the end of a recital often elicits one other …
