中國現代文學的整體維度及其局限, Zaifu Liu Jul 1997

中國現代文學的整體維度及其局限, Zaifu Liu

Journal of Modern Literature in Chinese

Beyond Cultural And National Identities : Current Re-Evaluation Of The Kominka Literature From Taiwan's Japanese Period, Sung Sheng, Yvonne Chang Jul 1997

Beyond Cultural And National Identities : Current Re-Evaluation Of The Kominka Literature From Taiwan's Japanese Period, Sung Sheng, Yvonne Chang

Journal of Modern Literature in Chinese 現代中文文學學報

This paper is an offshoot of a larger, ongoing project that intends to deal with the relationship between various artistic formations and the dominant culture in Taiwan's post-1949 era. Though the lifting of martial law in 1987 has demarcated this era into two drastically different periods and a clearer contour of the new period seems to be just beginning to emerge in the mid-1990s, various cultural forces are still busily negotiating with each other. Nonetheless, there seems to be a general consensus as to what constitutes a core of the new dominant culture: the spirit of pen-t'u, or a nativist …

Wreath-Laying In Poet's Corner, Westminster Abbey, Carol A. Martin Jun 1997

Wreath-Laying In Poet's Corner, Westminster Abbey, Carol A. Martin

The George Eliot Review Online, ISSN: 2831-5375

The nineteenth century was an age of travellers, including many famous British women travellers. Lady Hester Stanhope lived for years in the Middle East, Mary Kingsley explored the jungles of Gabon and died while performing medical work in South Africa, Isabella Bird Bishop journeyed around the globe and wrote books on Malaysia, China, Japan, the Hawaiian Islands, the Sinai Peninsula, and the valleys and peaks above 10,000 feet in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado.

George Eliot was also a woman interested in travel, though in ways different from those of the women I have just named. Several of the earliest …

Wreath-Laying In The George Eliot Memorial Garden Nuneaton, Ruth Harris

The George Eliot Review Online, ISSN: 2831-5375

I am deeply grateful for the honour of being invited to lay a wreath in memory of George Eliot, and to lay it in a place that meant so much to her.... Nuneaton. Before the heavens opened, I pictured us all gathered outside surrounded by green grass, trees and flowers, and able to imagine the spirit of George Eliot not in her study surrounded by books but out-of-doors, enjoying the fresh air. Some imagination is needed to visualize a little girl gathering flowers in the sunshine, or running towards a Round Pool after her older brother, or leaping with delight …

Reading The Wreckage: De-Encrypting Eliot's Aesthetics Of Empire, Paul Douglass Apr 1997

Reading The Wreckage: De-Encrypting Eliot's Aesthetics Of Empire, Paul Douglass

Faculty Publications, English and Comparative Literature

The writer examines an aesthetics of empire evident in Eliot's The Waste Land. He contends that though this work's formal innovations appear “revolutionary,” its aesthetics fit into modernism's reactionary character and reflect the cultural politics of the British conservatism that Eliot had adopted. In decoding the poem's fragments and allusions, he illustrates Eliot's preoccupation with empire. He also shows how The Waste Land may be seen as part of a British literary tradition of “reading the wreckage” that goes back at least to Edward Volney's Ruins (1791).

Classicism And Romanticism (Fall 1997) (Whitman College), Robert D. Tobin Jan 1997

Classicism And Romanticism (Fall 1997) (Whitman College), Robert D. Tobin

Syllabi

This course was taught by Robert Tobin at Whitman College. Professor Tobin worked at Whitman for 18 years as associate dean of the faculty and chair of the humanities, and was named Cushing Eells Professor of the Humanities.

"Classicism and Romanticism attempts to provide an overview of the European literature in translation that arose in the so-called classical and romantic periods. Very roughly speaking, one could say that Classical literature was written in the late seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, while Romantic literature was written in the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries."

Classicism And Christianity In Hélisenne De Crenne's Les Angoysses Doulouoreuses Qui Procedent D'Amours, Megan Conway Jan 1997

Classicism And Christianity In Hélisenne De Crenne's Les Angoysses Doulouoreuses Qui Procedent D'Amours, Megan Conway

Quidditas

Although Renaissance philosophers and theologians like Marsilio Ficino strove mightily to show Plato and Plotinus compatible with Saint Paul, writers of popular prose and poetry suffered no such qualms. While it appears curious and often shocking to modern readers to find reference to the apostles and Apollo in successive paragraphs, many Renaissance writer followed Dante's example in The Divine Comedy and saw nothing incongruous in embracing classical mythology while espousing Christian doctrine. A fascinating example of this combination of traditions is the popular French work of a female author of the early Renaissance—Hélisenne de Crenne's Les Angoysses douloureuses qui procedent …

To "Eche Out Our Performance With Your Mind": Making Performance Pedagogy Intellectually Sound, Sharon A. Beehler Jan 1997

To "Eche Out Our Performance With Your Mind": Making Performance Pedagogy Intellectually Sound, Sharon A. Beehler

Quidditas

When the Chorus in Henry V instructs the audience about what to expect in Act III, it reiterates the point made earlier in the play that the spectator must take an active role in helping the players achieve their goal of presenting an effective drama: "eche out our performance with your mind" (line 35), says the Chorus. This would seem to be a commonplace of theater theory, but unfortunately, recent attempt by some teachers to incorporate televisual performance activities into the Shakespeare classroom have all too often neglected the intellectual participation of students with "performance texts," that is, with printed …

1997 Allen D. Breck Award Winner: A Woman's Life As Ancillary Text: The Printed Texts Of The Biography Of Elizabeth Tanfield Caary, Jesse G. Swan

Quidditas

As the first woman to write and publish an original play in English, Elizabeth Tanfield Cary, Viscountess Falkland, has become the subject of increased attention and appreciation over the last few decades. Since a major reason for studying Cary has been the feminist motivation to document women's contributions to the English language and its literature and culture, biographically informed criticism has naturally drawn much attention. With Cary, biographically informed criticism has been fostered by the existence of the Life of Cary, a biography written within a couple of decades of her death primarily by one of her four conventual daughters, …

Crossing Boundaries: Land And Sea In Jane Austen's 'Persuasion', Laura Vorachek Jan 1997

Crossing Boundaries: Land And Sea In Jane Austen's 'Persuasion', Laura Vorachek

English Faculty Publications

Jane Austen suggests in Persuasion the pressures that the increased mobility of the middle class placed on the established aristocratic society in her time. Anne Elliot especially brings to light the inherited assumptions of her society. She can marry within her social rank (Mr. Elliot or Charles Musgrove) or marry below her (Wentworth at age 23), but either is a choice within the limits established by her society. One owns land or one does not. But when Wentworth returns a man of name and wealth, he is not a member of the landed gentry nor is he below Anne in …

Signior, is all your family within?

Are your doors lock'd?
