The subject of this thesis revolves around the “Western” view of nature and its social origins. The author advances the subject through a comparison of two ancient texts: Hesiod’s Works and Days and the Old Testament book of Proverbs. He concludes that the Western view of nature gestated in agricultural societies of small-farmers who saw themselves as being both part of and separate from the natural world. Their ability to control nature being limited, they saw civilization as fulfilling a limited agricultural role in the cosmos, as being different but part of and not controlling the whole. Native Spiritualities As Resistance: Disrupting Colonialism In The Americas, Kirstin Lea Squint

This project analyzes eight novels which represent revolt or resistance by varied Native peoples against the European and Euro-American colonization of the Americas. I take a comparative approach to literatures of the Americas because of the dearth of research examining the literatures of both continents side by side, particularly literatures by and about Indigenous Americans. Chapter One introduces the theoretical bases for the project, including colonial and postcolonial theories, Native American literary theories, and aesthetic concerns specific to American Indian literatures. 從人到書，從書到人 : 對文學課本的反思與期望 = From Man To Book, And Book To Man : Reflections And Expectations Towards Literary Textbooks, Ka Kui Lee

作者認為文學是教育中不可缺少的成分，它可説是社會、文化與人的「情感教育」。若果一個社會對文學教育不夠重視，它或會因此而有所缺失，甚至乎會喪失「集體回憶」。不同地區的文學教育的表達或體現可以是多形式，包括獨立課程，如香港，或融入語文課程之內，如內地及台灣。教材出版，則是體現課程、展現課程的工具，用以協助教與學，因此兩者的關係極為密切。已故的出版家及社會語言學家陳原曾著有一書：《書和人和我》（1994），以出版人的身份去談書與人的關係，以及彼此間的種種聯想與抒發。從來出版人的終極關心都是文化和人，作者在此書的啟發下，去思考文學教育的發展，並嘗試借用陳原的説法，從人出發。從人去看書，看人需要怎樣的書；再從書去看人，看書怎樣可形塑人。

尋求新路向 :《海光文藝》研究 = In Search Of New Direction : Research On Hai Guang Literature, Wing Mui Cheung

要了解香港文學的發展，除了研究文學作品以外，其他如文藝雜誌、出版機構、作家社團等，都對作品的產生和流傳有重要的影響。不同出版機構編印的刊物，往往因應不同編輯方針而呈現相異的風貌，創作風格相類的作家，也容易因投稿或辦刊物的關係，凝聚成不同的社團或文學流派，這些文學作品以外的現象，與文學發展有千絲萬縷的聯繫。因此，筆者嘗試以一份文藝雜誌、——《海光文藝》為切入點，探討雜誌與文藝思潮發展的關係。由於本文以文藝雜誌為研究對象，因此不擬在文中作詳細的作品分析，筆者會集中討論刊物的整體特色，探討其創辦動機及編輯方針如何影響刊物的風格，再透過與其他同期刊物比較，看它在香港文學發展歷程中的地位和影響，希望透過《海光文藝》，看一九六〇年代中後期香港文學發展的一個側面。

起源及其變體 : 香港作家、香港文學與香港新詩 = The Origin And Its Variant : Hong Kong Writers, Literature And Poetry, Chi Tak Chan

在現代文學的研究當中，中國作家和台灣作家的定義問題沒有很大爭議，但當人們討論香港作家或香港文學時，往往在定義及相關爭議上糾纒不清，「香港作家」尤其是一個經常受質疑的概念。香港作家往往要為自己的身份和「香港」的合法性自辯，其間又會發現簡單的居民身份，如是否擁有香港身份證等實不足以界定「香港作家」。筆者過去在研究香港文學的過程中，除了史料的發掘和整理之外，首先處理的也是定義和身份的界定，期間覺察一個頗為關鍵的問題，就是在不同年代，香港作家、香港文學與香港新詩的意涵並非固定。本文把問題上溯至一九二、三〇年代，透過回顧早年香港作者對「香港文壇」、「香港詩歌」及相關問題的討論，嘗試在地理或地域的意涵以外，從文學觀念的起源及其變體上，重思香港作家、香港文學與香港新詩的構成。

香港短篇小說中的「北方記憶」與「革命想像」 = Remembering The North And Imagining The Revolution : Hong Kong Short Stories, Zidong Xu

本文試圖重新閱讀一九七〇到九〇年代四篇香港短篇小說，以討論香港小中「北方記憶」和「革命想像」之異同。所謂「北方記憶」泛指一些南來作家對「前半生」社會及生活狀況的記憶、記錄或遺忘情況。「大陸前半生」通常要靠「香港後半生」才能梳理，但也同時會影響制約「香港後半生」的生態心態。所謂「革命想像」則泛指早年來港或在本港土生土長作家們對北方中國革命 （尤其是「文化大革命」） 的非感性經驗，這些有關中國革命的想像方式不僅為香港故事提供邏輯前因，而且更重要的是香港故事同時又為這些中國革命困局找出頗有創意的解決方案。

這篇拙文擬討論香港與台灣之間的文學因緣，由於論述對象有其特殊性，所以下文中有部分我會依學術慣例撰寫，而其他一一尤其涉及當代者——我則可能得跳出此一規範，由個人的經驗出之，回憶色彩可能重了些。此外，撰寫前我讀到了鄭樹森著《從諾貝爾到張愛玲》，後來又翻了梁秉鈞著《香港文化空間與文學》與單德興剛剛發表的〈冷戰時代的美國文學中譯：今日世界出版社之文學翻譯與文化政治〉，因三者都有專文——或本身即為專文——涉及香港與台灣之間的文學關係，而且各個寫得面廣而度深，是以除了徵引上的必要外，我也會盡量避開三氏業已談過者，一切但以個人管見所及為主。崔顥既已題了詩，眼前之景，我怎道得？

William Faulkner's body of work addresses many specific issues and conditions specific to the South, but this project focuses on the place of Southern women in society and Faulkner's exploration of their subjugation through the language and images of art. I will analyze three of his texts: "A Rose for Emily," As I Lay Dying, and The Sound and the Fury with a particular focus on the main female characters and the art metaphors they are presented in association with and. often, as encapsulated within. Abraham Lincoln In Recent American Fiction, James Tackach

Abraham Lincoln began to appear as a character in American fiction shortly after the Civil War, but the Lincoln novel matured during the second half of the twentieth century. Earlier treatments of Lincoln in American fictional works, such as Henry Ward Beecher’s Norwood (1867), Edward Eggleston’s The Graysons (1888), and Honore Morrow’s The Last Full Measure (1930) tended to portray Lincoln as a saintly and sentimentalized figure, a heroic individual without flaws or personal demons. By 1950, however, Lincoln scholars had already begun to show the man’s warts, and novelists would follow suit.

翻译研究的对话性路径 : 巴赫金思想与翻译研究, Bo Li

翻译研究已经成为一门独立的学科，研究领域逐渐扩大，研究方法也在不 断完善；与此同时，巴赫金研究在世界范围内，也吸引了越来越多的目光和注 意力，为语言学、文学、文化研究、哲学等相关或相邻学科提供了丰富的理论 资源。在这样一个大背景下，本项研究采取了跨学科的研究模式，概念分析与个案研究相结合，力图说明巴赫金思想对翻译研究的适用性，在二者之间寻找理论挪用的契合点。
本文在回顾以往研究的基础上，提出了新的研究问题和假设，充分借鉴巴赫金思想，分析和解释与翻译相关的诸多问题和现象。本文提出从基于表述的主体间言语交际来看翻译过程，从杂语的角度来分析原文和译文，从声音的角 度来看译者的叙述在场及其主体性实现，从对话的角度来看翻译中涉及主体之间的主体间性，从声音和杂语的角度来思考翻译与身份认同的问题，从而对于我们理解翻译过程的实质、理解翻译过程的艰难、理解翻译中译者的主体性与翻译中的主体间性、理解翻译与身份认同的关系等等，试图提供可行的分析模 式和有意义的思考路径。在这个意义上来说，本项研究对于推进翻译研究具有一定的理论贡献。同时，本文借助文学翻译、电影字幕翻译等实际个案 (特别是台湾作家王祯和的长篇小说《玫瑰玫瑰我爱你》英语译本)，印证本文提出的分析模式的有效性和可行性。
