Composed in the late fifteenth century, Fernando del Pulgar’s Crónica de los Reyes Católicos was the official account of – and therefore one of the best sources for – some of the most significant events in late medieval Spanish history. Within his narrative, Pulgar described the marriage of Isabel and Fernando (better known today as the Catholic Monarchs), the establishment of the Spanish Inquisition, and the buildup to the conquest of Granada. This paper offers a close reading of some of the miracle tales dedicated to the Virgin Mary as contained in Caesarius of Heisterbach’s Dialogus miraculorum (ca. 1240) in order to shed light on the fundamental narrative structures of this genre, the association between the narratives and their material background, and to build a case to argue that medieval miracle narratives actually shared much in common with the discourse on magic. “We Are Perpetually Moralists:” Samuel Johnson And Renaissance Epistemology, Brandon Schneeberger

Quidditas

This article discusses how new Renaissance epistemological views shaped the important eighteenth-century critic Samuel Johnson. I argue that Johnson emphasizes conversation as an important element of epistemology, pushing against what was an over-emphasize on book learning perpetuated by educators such as Peter Ramus. The rise in print-culture led to a shift in epistemology, in which knowledge could be seen as linear, codified, or fixed. While Johnson works both within and against these new epistemological trends, I argue that his criticism of John Milton’s poetry can be appreciated more fully if Johnson’s own reservations about print culture are kept in mind. …

Influenced by the “new” fiscal historiographical agenda of the 1990s, this article pioneers a radical reconstruction of the Yorkist-era royal budget. This demonstrates that the increased role of demesne revenues managed by the royal chamber in financing total expenditures under Edward IV, which was famously applauded by B. P. Wolffe, signally failed to provide for long-term fiscal stability. The removal of Edward’s French pension in 1483 led to a substantial deficit which compelled Richard III to contravene his brother’s pledge to “live of his own”. When Giambono of Matraia, a monk from the monastery of San Ponziano in Lucca, appeared before Lucca’s episcopal court in 1356, he found himself facing charges of adultery, robbery, and murder. After four witnesses testified against him, Giambono confessed. งานวิจัยนี้มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อศึกษากลวิธีการแปลคำนาม และวลีที่ใช้เรียกสตรีเพศ ในสำนวนแปลเรื่อง ห้องส่วนตัว โดย มาลินี แก้วเนตร จากความเรียงแนวสตรีนิยมเรื่อง A Room of One’s Own ของ เวอร์จิเนีย วูล์ฟ ซึ่งผู้วิจัยได้รวบรวมคำนาม และวลีที่ใช้เรียกขานหรือกล่าวถึงสตรีเพศ เป็นจำนวนทั้งสิ้น 33 คำ เช่น คำว่า feminist, girl, female, wife, lady, woman/women, harlot, courtesan เป็นต้น โดยที่ผู้วิจัยต้องการพิสูจน์สมมติฐานที่ว่า ในการแปลคำนาม และวลีที่ใช้เรียกสตรีเพศ ในสำนวนแปลเรื่อง ห้องส่วนตัว นี้ มีการใช้ 3 กลวิธี ได้แก่ การแปลตรงตัว การแปลแบบตีความ และการแปลแบบทับศัพท์ ผลการวิเคราะห์สรุปได้ว่า ในสำนวนแปลดังกล่าวพบว่ามีการใช้ทั้ง 3 กลวิธีดังกล่าวจริง โดยกลวิธีที่ปรากฏมากที่สุดคือการแปลแบบตรงตัว คิดเป็นร้อยละ 55.06 เพื่อให้ผู้อ่านได้รับสารจากผู้เขียนครบถ้วน และตรงตามเจตนาของผู้เขียน รองลงมาเป็นการแปลแบบตีความ คิดเป็นร้อยละ 42.69 เพื่อให้บทแปล มีความกระจ่างชัด สละสลวย เป็นธรรมชาติ นอกจากนี้ยังพบว่า ในบางบริบทจะมีการเพิ่มคำ และละคำไม่แปล ทั้งในกลวิธีการแปลตรงตัว และการแปลแบบตีความ เพื่อให้บทแปลเป็นธรรมชาติ และเนื้อความไม่ซ้ำซ้อน กลวิธีสุดท้ายที่ปรากฏว่ามีการใช้น้อยที่สุดคือการแปลแบบทับศัพท์ ซึ่งคิดเป็นร้อยละ 2.25 เท่านั้น โดยการแปลแบบ ทับศัพท์ พบได้ใน 2 กรณี ได้แก่ 1. คำภาษาอังกฤษคำนั้นเป็นคำที่คนไทยรู้จักกันเป็นอย่างดี และ 2. คำนั้นเป็นชื่อเรียกตัวละคร ซึ่งมีการใช้การทับศัพท์อย่างกว้างขวางในวงการวรรณกรรม

สารนิพนธ์ฉบับนี้มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อศึกษา วิเคราะห์ และคิดค้นกลวิธีการถ่ายทอดวัจนลีลาของตัวบทประเภทอรรถสารที่ประพันธ์ด้วยรูปแบบรจนาสารในตัวบทคัดสรรของหนังสือเรื่อง The Seven Lamps of Architecture ของ John Ruskin เพื่อนำไปสู่บทแปลซึ่งมีอรรถรสเทียบเคียงกับต้นฉบับ ผู้วิจัยได้ศึกษาค้นคว้าแนวทางการวิเคราะห์ตัวบทของคริสติอาเน นอร์ด (Christiane Nord) ทฤษฎีสโกพอส (Skopostheorie) ของแคธารินา ไรส์ และ ฮานส์ เจ แฟร์เมียร์ (Katharina Reiss & Hans J. Vermeer) ทฤษฎีการแปลของปีเตอร์ นิวมาร์ก (Peter Newmark) และแนวทางการแปลวัจนลีลา (Stylistic Approaches) ของจีน โบแอส-เบเออร์ (Jean Boase-Beier) รวมถึงความรู้ทางประวัติศาสตร์สถาปัตยกรรมฟื้นฟูกอธิกในยุควิกตอเรียนของประเทศอังกฤษเพื่อเป็นแนวทางในการวิเคราะห์ตัวบทการวิเคราะห์ปัญหาในการถ่ายทอดวัจนลีลา การวางแผนการแปล และการแก้ปัญหาในการถ่ายทอดวัจนลีลาดังกล่าว ผลการวิจัยพบว่า การประยุกต์ใช้ทฤษฎีและแนวคิดต่าง ๆ ข้างต้นโดยยึดกลวิธีการแปลแบบสื่อความ (Communicative Translation) และการแปลแบบครบความ (Semantic Translation) ตามทฤษฎีการแปลของ นิวมาร์กเป็นหลัก ร่วมกับการปรับบทแปลทั้งในระดับคำ วลี และโครงสร้างประโยค จะช่วยแก้ไขปัญหาการแปลตัวบทที่มีการใช้วัจนลีลาโดดเด่นได้ในระดับดี โดยสามารถรักษารูปแบบวัจนลีลาและวรรณศิลป์ดั้งเดิม รวมทั้งสามารถคงอรรถรสเทียบเคียงต้นฉบับไว้ได้

สารนิพนธ์นี้ศึกษาการแปลเทพนิยายเรื่อง The Fisherman and His Soul ของออสการ์ ไวลด์ โดยเปรียบเทียบระหว่างสำนวน วิญญาณของชาวประมง ของอ.สนิทวงศ์ และสำนวน ชาวประมงกับจิตวิญญาณ ของวลัยภรณ์ นาคพันธุ์ ผู้วิจัยศึกษาทบทวนทฤษฎีต่างๆ เพื่อหาเกณฑ์ที่เหมาะในการเปรียบเทียบกลุ่มตัวอย่างและวิเคราะห์ตัวบทต้นฉบับก่อนลงมือเปรียบเทียบ การศึกษาเปรียบเทียบยืนยันสมมติฐานการวิจัยว่าสำนวนแปลทั้ง ๒ สำนวนมีความแตกต่างกันอย่างมีนัยยะสำคัญ กล่าวคือ สำนวนของ อ.สนิทวงศ์ เก็บเนื้อหาสำคัญ วรรณศิลป์ นัยยะซ่อนเร้น ตลอดจนวัฒนธรรมต้นทางไว้ค่อนข้างครบถ้วน ทำให้สำนวนของ อ.สนิทวงศ์มีมิติและน่าสนใจกว่าสำนวนของวลัยภรณ์ที่แปลโดยปรับให้เข้ากับวัฒนธรรมของผู้อ่านปลายทาง ซึ่งทำให้นัยยะซ่อนเร้น ความคิด ความเชื่อ ถ้อยคำประชดประชัน อันเป็นเอกลักษณ์ของออสการ์ ไวลด์ไม่ปรากฏเด่นชัด ผลก็คือ สำนวนของ อ.สนิทวงศ์เก็บรักษา “สาร” (message) ของผู้ประพันธ์ เมื่อแปลเป็นภาษาปลายทาง ผู้อ่านชาวไทยจึงได้รับ “สาร” ซึ่งรักษา "รหัสวัฒนธรรม" (culture code) ต้นฉบับได้ครบถ้วน งานวิจัยช่วยให้ได้ข้อสรุปว่า การแปลเทพนิยายที่ดี คือการแปลโดยถ่ายทอดวรรณศิลป์ให้ใกล้เคียงกับต้นฉบับ และแปลโดยถ่ายทอดวัฒนธรรมต้นฉบับมากกว่าปรับให้เข้ากับวัฒนธรรมปลายทาง
