In this essay, I interrogate visual representations of a lesbian love story in Jul’ Maroh’s graphic novel Le bleu est une couleur chaude and its film adaptation by director Abdellatif Kechiche, La vie d’Adèle : Chapitres 1 et 2. By studying the diegesis of each work’s opening scene, I reveal that the graphic novel embodies Barthes’s concept of a writerly text, or one that requires its reader to produce its meaning, while the film, as a readerly work, constructs a passive viewing experience for its audience. This research aims to assess Google Translate´s effectiveness in English-Thai consecutive interpreting based on users' comprehension and to investigate users’ satisfaction with MI renditions. Ten native speakers of Thai and eight native speakers of English were asked to listen to the translated speeches and complete a questionnaire to assess the Adequacy and Fluency of the MI. The findings showed that in terms of Adequacy of the English to Thai MI participants’ comprehension scores ranged from 2.4 to 3.45 out of 5, while Fluency received less than half of the maximum scores in all areas. One of the greatest feats that a poet may achieve in his or her lifetime is to develop a voice so characteristic of themself, it would be impossible to confuse it with that of any other poet. Polish-speaking and non-Polish-speaking scholars alike have agreed that the voice of 1996 Nobel Laureate Wisława Szymborska is utterly distinct, despite the fact that her poems explore a wide range of topics and are told from multiple narrative perspectives, rarely featuring herself through any personal details. This paper looks at the continued need for human translation and subtitling. As the world becomes more globally connected, particularly in regards to reality television, more than solely a translation of language is required. The lens of reality television demonstrates the need for both a translation of culture as well as language. This thesis will look specifically at the Netflix program, Made in Mexico. This essay places the reader at one of three sites of interpretation in Johannes de Alta Silva’s “Gaza,” located at the levels of 1) story, 2) frame narrative, and 3) reader. Identifying these levels as distinct spaces within which interpretation unfolds, I examine the level of the reader to demonstrate how the text explicitly shapes the reader’s role. Composed c. 1200 CE, “Gaza” is one of ten stories in Alta Silva’s Dolopathos, which forms a part of the larger medieval tradition known as The Seven Sages. In her influential History Matters: Patriarchy and the Challenge of Feminism, Judith Bennett asked “Who’s afraid of the distant past?” Fifteen years after this book’s publication, the question remains relevant. Teaching the history of women and gender in the premodern world presents linked pedagogical challenges. Most students enter college with little to no background in premodern history. Many find premodern primary sources, when taught with the same pedagogical scaffolding as modern sources, inaccessible due to real or perceived strangeness.
