A Historic Review And Empirical Revitalization Of The Stages Of Concern Questionnaire, Kent Anderson Seidel
School Leadership Review
This paper examines one of three central diagnostic tools of the Concerns Based Adoption Model, the Stages of Concern Questionnaire (SoCQ). The SoCQ was developed with a focus on K12 education. It has been used widely since developed in 1973, in early childhood, higher education, medical, business, community, and military settings. The SoCQ captures data about beliefs and intentions of individuals regarding their engagement with a new program or practice.
In our search of publications utilizing the SoCQ, we have found studies conducted across the world, with approximately 400 based in the United States 100 conducted outside the US. In …

Dismantling Inequities In The Faculty Evaluation System, Mary Petron, William Blackwell, Abbie Strunc
School Leadership Review
Qualifying for merit is a competitive and contentious process in higher education. Many merit structures are based upon traditional faculty evaluation systems which do not reflect the changing nature of higher education and thus, yield inequitable results. This article presents the case of a large department at a mid-size regional university that revised the system for merit and faculty evaluation to recognize undergraduate contributions and more equitably score the scholarship, service, and teaching of faculty members in the department. The case describes the relevant literature, the university and departmental context, the process for designing the new evaluation system, and lessons …

The Causes And Effects Of Procuring A Culturally Relevant And Sustaining Educational Pedagogy, Lauren Mcneil
Education Doctorate Dissertations
This study investigates the causes and effects of educators adopting a Culturally Relevant and Sustaining Education (CR-SE) pedagogy within our educational system. Three qualitative data collection and analysis pathways are used: thirteen participants are surveyed and interviewed, a policy analysis occurs, and an autoethnographic journal is analyzed. This research explores how cultural conflicts, deficit mindsets, and at-risk labeling contribute to systemic inequities, leading to social suffering for both students and educators. The research examines how educators who develop a critical consciousness navigate these challenges, often experiencing moral injury as they advocate for equitable educational practices. Through qualitative inquiry, this study …

Graduate Theses & Dissertations
This qualitative research answers the question, “What are considerations, challenges, and successes of urban elementary school leaders when designing academic Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) infrastructure?;” and the sub-question, “How does school leadership develop a consensus on academic MTSS practices?” This research gathered insight on the importance of the consensus process in customizing MTSS practices to a school’s unique needs and in avoiding the caveats of a one-size-fits-all approach. As a result, the key recommendation is schools need to reach a unified consensus on explicit MTSS practices for clarity and quality control to be most efficacious. This process was not …

Transition Process Considerations For Collegiate Student-Athlete Sport Retirement, Lindsey Weatherford
Student Theses and Dissertations
This study explores the transition process for collegiate student-athletes retiring from sport, particularly at small colleges or universities in the Midwest, where student-athlete enrollment is significant. The problem addressed is the lack of structured support systems to aid student-athletes in navigating this transition. This affects their psychological well-being, career preparedness, and overall life satisfaction. The purpose of this qualitative phenomenological study was to identify potential components for a transition process that assists student-athletes from recruitment through to retirement from sport and career post-graduation. Schlossberg’s transition theory served as the guiding theoretical framework, emphasizing identity transition, support systems, coping strategies, and …

School of Education Capstone Projects
The purpose of this capstone project is to investigate the systemic barriers that limit the academic career advancement of male educators of color within the educational system, specifically highlighting School District 88. This study specifically addresses the disproportionate placement of Black and Latino male educators into disciplinary roles rather than academic leadership positions. Utilizing Implementation Science principles, the project outlines a multi-faceted intervention plan designed to dismantle implicit biases, enhance mentorship opportunities, and establish structured pathways for professional growth. By promoting equity- driven hiring practices, mentorship programs, and policy reforms, this capstone seeks to increase the representation of male educators …

Supporting Elementary Educators Through A Nervous System Regulation And Social-Emotional Learning Skills Workshop Intervention: An Musc Capstone Project, Lily Morgan
Entry-Level Occupational Therapy Doctorate - Doctoral Capstone Symposium
Teachers have a great influence on developing children’s emotional intelligence, regulatory capacity, and occupational engagement. These professionals also happen to report some of the highest rates of stress, mental health challenges (Agyapong, B. et al, 2022), and burnout (Xie, M., et al, 2022). Providing teachers with education and support on nervous system regulation, social-emotional learning skills, and related topics can improve their ability to manage job stress, enhance modeling and interactions with students, and improve their quality of life. This project aimed to enhance knowledge, provide access to resources, and serve to support elementary educators at an inner-city school in …

The problem that was addressed through this study is the approximately 13% attrition of K-12 principals in a large urban school district in the Mid-Atlantic region, exceeding the national average. The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore the perspectives of K-12 principals who had persisted in their roles despite the significant challenges in leading urban schools. The study was grounded in the job demands-resources theory, which posits that job demands could lead to burnout, while job resources help employees cope with challenges, thereby fostering resilience. For this basic qualitative design, data were collected from semistructured interviews with 12 …

Balancing The Clock: Work Hours And Work-Life Balance Among Texas Principals, J. Suzy Ponton, Christopher Benedetti
School Leadership Review
This study examines the work-life balance of Texas principals, focusing on role balance, overload, and ease and how these factors vary across different school levels when accounting for hours worked. Principals are critical to the success of schools but often face significant stress and burnout due to excessive job demands, long working hours, and limited support, which can lead to turnover. Using a quantitative, cross-sectional design, the study analyzes survey data from 122 principals across Texas, with findings suggesting that while high school principals report lower role overload and higher role ease than their elementary and middle school counterparts, they …

School Leadership Review
Abstract:
In today's data-driven and data-informed educational landscape, leaders face increasing pressure to make decisions and present results based on what appear to be comprehensive statistical analyses. However, the ethical implications of these responsibilities can be complex, particularly when statistical results carry the potential to be miscommunicated, misinterpreted, misrepresented, or even misused. This article explores some of the critical aspects of ethical statistical practices in educational leadership and provides practical considerations for leaders in using and presenting data responsibly. Specifically, the narrative contained herein emphasizes ethical practice associated with statistics and data analysis, not simply the ethics of general research …

Effective Principals In 2025 From The Lens Of The Supervisor, Cynthia Martinez-Garcia, Clare A. Resilla, Julie P. Combs
School Leadership Review
The ever-changing and complex nature of school leadership requires schools to have principals who have strong leadership skills and experience. In this study, the researchers sought to define the essence of effective principals through the lens of their supervisors. Using phenomenological inquiry, we interviewed four assistant superintendents of large school districts in the Greater Houston area. These supervisors, who supervise several school principals, believe successful principals are passionate, driven leaders with well-developed leadership and communication skills who can accurately assess the school culture and the level of teacher buy-in. Implications for training principals and future research are shared.
