Developing An Advanced High-Tech Entrepreneurial Habitat, Knowledge@SMU 2010 Singapore Management University

Developing An Advanced High-Tech Entrepreneurial Habitat, Knowledge@Smu

Knowledge@SMU

Technology, in and of itself, cannot transform ideas to profits. According to William Miller, a professor, entrepreneur and venture capitalist, having the technology that the market wants is only part of the game. To be successful, technology requires other necessary conditions to be in place – an ecosystem of talent, money, trade, education, art, even lawyers – to grow and flourish. The challenge, however, is in getting the hardware-software combination right.

From Imitators To Inventors: China’S Changing Innovation Landscape, Knowledge@SMU 2010 Singapore Management University

From Imitators To Inventors: China’S Changing Innovation Landscape, Knowledge@Smu

Knowledge@SMU

Long derided as an economic entity happier to copy than to invent, the number of patents filed and assigned in China has been growing at 13% annually in the two decades to 2006, with a total of 1.1 million patents awarded. Private enterprises, after a slow start, are now leading the charge in securing an ever bigger number of patents, especially after 2001. Individuals, meanwhile, are the second most prolific group. What causes this surge in patent applications? What are some of the issues involved? SMU management professor Kenneth Huang details findings from a recent study.

Development Of Information Technology Auditing Teaching Modules: An Interdisciplinary Endeavor Between Seidenberg And Lubin Faculty, Chienting Lin, Li-Chiou Chen, Kaustav Sen

Cornerstone 3 Reports : Interdisciplinary Informatics

The original goals of the project were to develop interdisciplinary Information Technology (IT) Auditing

teaching modules, to be integrated into courses offered by both Business and Information Technology

understanding audit, control, technology and security concepts in accordance with audit standards,

guidelines, and best practices. Thus, IT Auditing requires interdisciplinary knowledge across IT and

Accounting/Auditing domains. With increasing use of IT in business processes, the demand for IT

Auditors is increasing rapidly, offering a lucrative career path. Acquiring IT Audit related knowledge and

Perceptions Of The Tourism And Hospitality Industry By Singapore Polytechnic Hospitality Students: An Exploratory Study, Justin Matthew Pang

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Many Singapore polytechnic students are not keen to join the hospitality line even after being enrolled in a 3-year hospitality program. Many students find the nature of the job too stressful and strenuous. Students have also cited reasons such as long working hours, shift work, dealing with unpredictable circumstances in the job environment and having lower starting remuneration as compared other industries (K. Ong, personal communications, June 16, 2010). Other perceived qualitative reasons that have been given by students for not joining the industry would be the semi-professional nature of the hospitality industry as compared to other industries such as …

Embracing Self Service Technology For Hotel Productivity Growth, Kee Chuan Neo

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

This paper explores the various ways in which self-service technology (SST), if employed by the hotel industry, can actually contribute to the productivity growth in Singapore. The study provides an understanding of customer’s technology acceptance and readiness by utilizing the two widely extended and accepted approaches, Technology Readiness Index (TRI) and Technology acceptance model (TAM). The study also evaluated the four common self-service technology channels: electronic kiosks, the Internet, mobile devices, and the telephone applications. From an investigation on past studies, it is found that Singapore is receptive to self-service technology. Self-service technology thus could bring a highly respectable return …

Intricacies Of Professional Certifications For Quality Management (Qm), Edmund R. Martelli

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

The modern manufacturing marketplace is extremely complex and constantly changing. Career professionals often seek job placement, career advancement, and continuing education through professional certifications. Professional certifications in the United States (U.S.) have been evolving since 1911. In the 1950s, engineering groups established professional certifications and licenses. In the 1980s, administration of accreditation of certification programs proliferated, and by the 1990s, many government and professional organizations sought to standardize procedures for the industry. Currently, professional certifications are available for virtually every profession and issued by multitudes of organizations.

Influence Of Financial And Policy Environments On The Business Strategy Of Biotechnology Companies In India, Sumesh Mohan Arora 2010 University of Southern Mississippi

Influence Of Financial And Policy Environments On The Business Strategy Of Biotechnology Companies In India, Sumesh Mohan Arora

Dissertations

The biotechnology industry thrives on innovation and new knowledge creation, but is also capital intensive with a complex regulatory environment (Hine and Kapeleris 2007). It is seen as a sunrise industry by the Indian government (Natesh and Bhan 2009). Current literature on the business strategy of Indian biotechnology companies and the influence from external factors is very limited. The objective of this research was to qualitatively test the applicability of the Miles and Snow (1978) theory of organizational behavior which describes four strategy choices: prospector, analyzer, defender and reactor, in the context of the Indian biotechnology sector. Research on Western …

China's Innovation Landscape, Kenneth G. Huang

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

The People's Republic of China has experienced three decades of sustained, strong annual economic growth as it transitions from a centrally planned economy to a free market. Currently the world's second largest economy, China recognizes scientific and technological innovation as an increasingly important strategy to fuel the next phase of its productivity growth. However, the drivers and trajectories of China's scientific and technological growth remain under-investigated. To understand elements of China's innovative activities, particularly in science and technology, an analysis of comprehensive patent data provided by the State Intellectual Property Office (SIPO) of China is presented here.

Application Of Open-Source Enterprise Information System Modules: An Empirical Study, Sang-Heui Lee 2010 University of Nebraska-Lincoln

Application Of Open-Source Enterprise Information System Modules: An Empirical Study, Sang-Heui Lee

College of Business: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Although there have been a number of studies on large scale implementation of proprietary enterprise information systems (EIS), open-source software (OSS) for EIS has received limited attention in spite of its potential as a disruptive innovation. Cost saving is the main driver for adopting OSS among the other possible benefits including security and reliability, transparency of development process, etc. Due to the costly implementation of proprietary EIS, small- and medium-sized organizations have given attention to OSS as an alternative. OSS EIS can also help create a competitive advantage by enabling organizations to customize their information systems by modifying the open-source …

Right Up Our Valley: Why Singapore Ought To Quit Copying Silicon Valley, Knowledge@SMU 2010 Singapore Management University

Right Up Our Valley: Why Singapore Ought To Quit Copying Silicon Valley, Knowledge@Smu

Knowledge@SMU

For a small piece of land with no natural resources to offer, Singapore's economy relies a lot on its strategic geographical location, human talents, as well as a penchant for wanting to be the global, and if not, regional 'hub' for commerce, arts and sciences. Where technology is concerned, the one to beat is Silicon Valley. A tall order, perhaps, but the draw is unmistakably alluring. On its own, the Valley boasts a GDP of US$100 billion, generating more wealth per person than anywhere else in the USA. Not content with just salivating over that piece of the pie, Singapore …
