Making Choices While Smelling, Tasting, And Listening: The Role Of Sensory (Dis)Similarity When Sequentially Sampling Products, Dipayan Biswas, Lauren Labrecque, Donald R. Lehmann, Ereni Markos 2014 University of South Florida

Making Choices While Smelling, Tasting, And Listening: The Role Of Sensory (Dis)Similarity When Sequentially Sampling Products, Dipayan Biswas, Lauren Labrecque, Donald R. Lehmann, Ereni Markos

School of Business: Faculty Publications and Other Works

Marketers are increasingly allowing consumers to sample sensory-rich experiential products before making purchase decisions. The results of seven experimental studies (two conducted in field settings, three conducted in a laboratory, and two conducted online) demonstrate that the order in which consumers sample products and the level of (dis)similarity between the sensory cues of the products influence choices. In the absence of any moderators, when sampling a sequence of sensory-rich experiential products (e.g., fragrances, chocolates, flavored beverages, music) with similar sensory cues (e.g., smell, taste, color, sound), consumers prefer the first product in the sequence. However, when sampling a sequence of …

Facing Global Economic Crisis: Foreign Sales, Ownership Groups, And Corporate Value, Xufei Ma, Daphne W. Yiu, Nan Zhou

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

This study extends the research on internationalization to a new organizational context emerging market firms (EMF), and a new time context global economic crisis. We propose a U-shaped relationship between foreign sales intensity and firm value for EMFs during global economic crisis. Further, we distinguish between EMFs' relational owners (i.e., business groups) and transactional owners (i.e., institutional investors) to investigate their different moderating effects. We find empirical support for our hypotheses using a sample of Chinese firms during the global economic crisis in 2008. Moreover, we provide research and practice implications.

Marketing An Established Institutional Repository: Marquette Libraries’ Research Stewardship Survey, Rose Fortier, Emily Laws

Library Faculty Research and Publications

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to discuss the results of Marquette University Libraries’ survey measuring faculty knowledge and attitudes about the institution’s repository, for the purposes of creating a marketing plan for the institutional repository (IR).

Design/methodology/approach

The paper adopts a quantitative approach through the use of a survey.

Like many other endeavors to measure faculty engagement with the IR, the investigators discovered that faculty knowledge of the IR is not universal. Moreover, the perceived values and motivators for faculty use of the IR were also not surprising, with faculty viewing online dissemination of their work to …

Ratings Lead You To The Product, Reviews Help You Clinch It? The Dynamics And Impact Of Online Review Sentiments On Products Sales, Nan HU, Noi Sian KOH, Srinivas K. REDDY 2014 University of Wisconsin - Eau Claire

Ratings Lead You To The Product, Reviews Help You Clinch It? The Dynamics And Impact Of Online Review Sentiments On Products Sales, Nan Hu, Noi Sian Koh, Srinivas K. Reddy

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

It is generally assumed that ratings are a numeric representation of text sentiments and their valences are consistent. This however may not always be true. Using a panel of data on over 4000 books from Amazon.com, we develop a multiple equation model to examine the inter-relationships between ratings, sentiments, and sales. We find that ratings do not have a significant direct impact on sales but have an indirect impact through sentiments. Sentiments, however, have a direct significant impact on sales. Our findings also indicate that the two most accessible types of reviews - most helpful and most recent - play …

Lays: Halal/Haram Crisis, Jami Moiz, Nida Aslam Khan

Business Review

The following case revolves around Frito Lays which is a highly popular Snack-food Company in various Muslim nations. One of Frito Lays biggest brands, Lays Potato Chips, is a major competitor in the Pakistani Snack foods market. However in 2009, Lays faced a major controversy when it was targeted with a campaign saying that an ingredient found in the manufacturing is Haram (prohibited for Muslims). This claim proved to be disastrous from Lays as it meant a loss in the consumer base as well as a dent onto the Brand's image amongst its wide base of Muslim consumers. The case further …

Message Matters: Application Of The Theory Of Planned Behavior To Increase Household Hazardous Waste Program Participation, Amy Dyer Cabaniss 2014 Antioch University of New England

Message Matters: Application Of The Theory Of Planned Behavior To Increase Household Hazardous Waste Program Participation, Amy Dyer Cabaniss

Antioch University Dissertations & Theses

Removing household hazardous waste (HHW) from the municipal solid waste stream is important to protect health, safety and the environment. Communities across the U.S. separate HHW from regular trash for disposal with hazardous waste, however nationally, participation rates are low with only five to ten percent of households estimated to participate in any given collection. This two-part study used the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) to understand individuals’ beliefs and attitudes toward HHW collections, and to develop a print message intervention to increase participation. In Study 1, respondents (N = 983) completed a survey administered to homeowners in the Connecticut …

A Stakeholder–Human Capital Perspective On The Link Between Social Performance And Executive Compensation, Peter M. Madsen, John B. Bingham 2014 Brigham Young University - Provo

A Stakeholder–Human Capital Perspective On The Link Between Social Performance And Executive Compensation, Peter M. Madsen, John B. Bingham

Faculty Publications

The link between firm corporate social performance (CSP) and executive compensation could be driven by a sorting effect (a firm’s CSP is related to the initial levels of compensation of newly hired executives), or by an incentive effect (incumbent executives are rewarded for past firm CSP). Existing empirical work focuses exclusively on the incentive effect. In contrast, in this paper we explore the sorting effect of firm CSP on the initial compensation of newly hired executives. In doing so, we develop a novel theoretical approach based on an integration of stakeholder theory and human capital theory, suggesting a positive association …

The Hidden Layer Of Buyer-Seller Relationships, Stephanie Marie Mangus 2014 Louisiana State University and Agricultural and Mechanical College

The Hidden Layer Of Buyer-Seller Relationships, Stephanie Marie Mangus

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Using social capital theory (SCT), this research conceptualizes trusted advisor relationships (TAR) and empirically tests the implications of such intense relationships on important performance outcomes. Essay 1 was conducted to offer an in-depth analysis of the conceptualization of trusted advisor relationships. A hermeneutical phenomenological approach was used to interpret the data derived from fourteen in-depth interviews with professional salespeople and their business-to-business (B2B) clients. These data supported the development of a conceptual model and definition of TARs. Essay 2 was conducted to explore the measurable components of trusted advisor relationships and solidify an operationalization of the construct for used in …

Operating A Very Large-Section, Hybrid Principles Of Marketing Class At A Public University: Lessons Learned Over Ten Years, Bruce Robertson, Kevin Kelly 2013 San Francisco State

Operating A Very Large-Section, Hybrid Principles Of Marketing Class At A Public University: Lessons Learned Over Ten Years, Bruce Robertson, Kevin Kelly

Atlantic Marketing Journal

This case study describes the development and operation of a very large-section, hybrid Principles of Marketing Class. The authors describe the original structure of the class, major adaptations and decisions related to its development over time, and discuss four lessons learned through this process: (1) The non-traditional format needs a lot of explaining, (2) This will always be an experimental class, (3) Plan in advance and have contingency plans, (4) It is easier to share the work than it is to share the budget. They conclude by suggesting Principles of Marketing is a logical entry point for innovative technology.

Exploring Consumer Behavior Using Student Constructed Photographic Essays And Film Projects, Seth Ellis 2013 University of San Diego

Exploring Consumer Behavior Using Student Constructed Photographic Essays And Film Projects, Seth Ellis

Atlantic Marketing Journal

Millennials can be characterized by a preference for classroom discussion rather than lecture, working in small collaborative groups, and a desire for structure and steady feedback. This paper describes an undergraduate course, Visual Methods for Exploring Consumer Behavior, where students examine topics in consumer behavior by constructing photographic essays and films as primary research vehicles. We discuss how the course is operationalized, how to encourage and support students in their endeavors, and how to avoid some of the pitfalls we have encountered.
