Developing Security For E-Commerce Applications: A Teaching Case, Chang Liu, Brian G. Mackie
Communications of the IIMA
The number of severe computer security breaches in e-commerce applications has been on the increase over the last few years. This has become one of the biggest security problems in recent years. Although there are tools to build e-commerce application firewalls to alert and prevent intruder attacks, these tools are not trivial to install (they are not plug-and-play). Internet intruders can create havoc and produce catastrophe results by exploiting weaknesses in e- commerce applications. Therefore, developers of e-commerce web sites have to incorporate ways to systematically identify and eliminate vulnerabilities in the EC applications to enhance their security. This paper …

Facing the competitive pressure from new hospitals and new regulations from the Bureau of National Health Insurance, hospital managers in Taiwan are concentrating on reducing the hospital operation costs and improving the healthcare quality. Practitioners and academic researchers agree that reducing the pharmacy cost is one of the best solutions to sustain competitive advantage. As electronic commerce becomes popular in many industry sectors, e- procurement is growing rapidly in the healthcare industry. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the managers' perceptions of benefits of using electronic procurement system. After surveying 152 hospitals in Taiwan, we find that hospital …

This paper utilizes a case study approach to analyze the key decisions, stakeholders, and lessons learned from a project to develop an Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) application conceived and developed by a consulting firm. Several individuals within the firm viewed this EDI service as an opportunity for generating new revenue. However, the new system was not embraced fully by several sales and account representatives who did not view this potential product as a service that could make an adequate profit margin and translate into larger commissions. In addition, the consulting firm's president supported the project to the extent that it …

Several factors can influence a consumer's likelihood of purchasing on the Web including trust, ease-of-use, and price discounts. This study examines over a dozen different variables that affect the decision to conduct business online. A survey of experienced Web users validated that poor design, security, and reliability tend to decrease a person's willingness to purchase through the Web.

Information Systems, Dominant Paradigms, And Emerging Concepts: A Community Clustering Analysis Of The Highest Impact Topics In Information Systems Research, Jonathan P. Allen
Entrepreneurship, Innovation, and Strategy
We provide a preliminary analysis of how diverse IS research has been, based on the research topics that have had the highest impact, as measured by academic citations. Does IS have a dominant paradigm? Our analysis argues that the impact of IS research has been dominated by a single research paradigm, which we label as ‘IS acceptance’. When this analysis is repeated for the most recent decade, the highest impact topics are still dominated by ‘IS acceptance’, but are joined by three new topics, ‘IS and design’, ‘IS and strategy’, and ‘IS and expertise’. Our analysis maps the intellectual structure …

Risk Decomposition For Fund Managers, Matthew Dixon
Business Analytics and Information Systems
This paper describes a methodology extension for decomposing non-linear portfolio risk by fund manager which we refer to as "Manager Component Value-at-Risk". The approach is well suited to funds holding any asset class or instrument type including derivatives. This decomposition approach is additive and fully captures the correlations between instrument returns and thus is well suited for decomposing risk by manager. We provide an example from a representative CTA portfolio that demonstrates superiority of the decomposition approach over other common practices for risk decomposition. The core methodology is implemented in R and made available to readers.

How Should Business Informatics Integrate Service, Process, Work System, And Enterprise Orientations?, Steven Alter
Business Analytics and Information Systems
Current research related to the subject matter of business informatics reflects divergent orientations that are fundamentally about representing, analyzing, and designing services or processes or work systems or enterprises. After summarizing those four orientations and citing typical exemplars, this paper identifies a variety of paths toward greater integration between different orientations within business informatics. It identifies central topics for each orientation along with areas in which each orientation provides ideas that complement other orientations and reveal possible synergies. Both the approach for identifying potential synergies and the proposed synergies themselves could encourage greater integration within business informatics.

This study presents a structural equations model that represents relationships between department chairs’ social intelligence (SI) and their creative performance (CP) at a public university in the United States. SI was defined as the ability to be aware of relevant social situations, to manage situational challenges effectively, to understand others’ concerns and feelings, and to build and maintain positive relationships in social settings. Four components of SI were examined: situational awareness, situational response, cognitive empathy, and social skills. The model was tested with questionnaire data from 406 faculty members belonging to 43 departments in a state university. The data analyses …

Striving For Research Impact: The Peculiar Case Of The Ais Bright Ict Initiative, Jonathan P. Allen
Entrepreneurship, Innovation, and Strategy
The debate over the real-world impact of research continues in many applied disciplines, including ICT research. We propose that concepts from social informatics can be used to analyze and critique the visions put forward by ICT- based professional societies that are striving for more impactful and pro-social research. Using the recent case of the Association for Information Systems (AIS) ‘Bright ICT Initiative’, we seek to understand how a general desire for more social benefit and research impact translates into a specific problem definition (cybersecurity), and further translates into specific solutions (new internet protocols, a new global governance center). The analysis …

Information Systems (IS) pose both a challenge and an opportunity for organizations. The topic of strategizing around IS issues is thus of considerable importance. While there has been substantial academic research relating to the strategic value of IS – over 50 years – much of it focuses on such aspects of the topic as strategic IS planning, strategic alignment, and IS for competitive advantage. Fewer studies have taken into account the emergent nature of strategy formation. Fewer still have given attention to strategy-making practitioners, in particular their role and influence in the strategizing process. Accordingly, the goal of this dissertation …

This essay discusses the requirements for the long-term acceptance of virtual currency as a financial medium of exchange by examination of fundamental criteria associated with the historical development of common tender and selected virtual currencies. The relatively recent appearance of Internet-based transactions have necessitated developing virtual forms of payment such as virtual currencies. According to the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (“FinCEN”) of the United States Treasury,5 virtual currencies are subject to regulation if that virtual currency has a substitutive purpose for facilitating the exchange of goods and services. Although governments can place stipulations on currencies, users of common tender, including …

Some managers view innovative product development and convenient service delivery as necessary to business survival. However, unmotivated employees might negate any gains from the use of innovation. The purpose of this correlational study, grounded in diffusion of innovation theory, was to assess the relationship between creativity and support for innovation, resistance to change, and organizational commitment and employee motivation. A random sample of 81 information technology (IT) professionals from telecom service centers completed an online survey. Simultaneous multiple linear regression was the statistical technique used to analyze these data. The results indicated a poor model with low R2 to significantly …

Although supply chain management and supply chain integration have become topics found within today’s organization as well as topics for researchers from various disciplines, little research has been completed concerning the linkage between business strategy, supply chain strategy, and the resulting decision which an organization makes to enter into an integration initiative. This paper discusses the experience of one organization in formulating a supply chain strategy consistent with its business strategy. The paper concludes with key elements driving the supply chain which emerge from this linkage, a framework for determining the importance of the supply chain to the organization, and …

The purpose of this study was to study the relationship between RFID technology and lean manufacturing. More specifically, the identification of implementation areas where RFID can have the greatest impact on manufacturing control, manufacturing asset tracking, and asset maintenance in a lean manufacturing environment. A survey was used to collect data from participants working in seven U.S. manufacturing industries. Questions addressed the use of RFID in manufacturing control, asset tracking, and asset maintenance. The survey items were directly related to the following manufacturing wastes: overproduction, waiting time, inefficient transportation, inappropriate processing, unnecessary inventory, unnecessary motion, and rejects and defects.
