Analyzing The Presence Of State-Run Retirement Plans For Private Sector Employees, Ruthann Froberg 2019 University of Kentucky

Analyzing The Presence Of State-Run Retirement Plans For Private Sector Employees, Ruthann Froberg

MPA/MPP/MPFM Capstone Projects

State-run retirement plans for non-covered private sector employees are a rapidly growing area of state policy. Since 2010, the majority of states in the U.S. have moved to either examine, enact, or implement these plans. This policy intends to increase private savings in an effort to reduce future reliance on public assistance and Social Security. Despite the current public policy interest, there is a lack of research evaluating the impact of plans or common state characteristics that are associated movement in this policy area. This capstone focuses on answering the latter question. Using state-level demographic, pension, welfare, and policy data, …

The Effect Of State-Level Constitutional Debt Limitations On The Costs Of Capital, Micah Johnson 2019 University of Kentucky

The Effect Of State-Level Constitutional Debt Limitations On The Costs Of Capital, Micah Johnson

MPA/MPP/MPFM Capstone Projects

Forty-five states have adopted some form of constitutional limitation on their own legislature’s ability to issue debt and raise capital. Eleven states have more than one such limitation. It seems intuitive to assume that constitutional strictures on a state’s ability to manage its fiscal policy would affect that state’s standing in the market, and it seems equally safe to assume that different combinations of the various forms of debt limitation would lead to varying effects in the market from state to state. However, the specific effects arising from the various constitutional provisions have proven to be difficult to measure. This …

Procure-To-Pay Software In The Digital Age: An Exploration And Analysis Of Efficiency Gains And Cybersecurity Risks In Modern Procurement Systems, Drew Lane 2019 University of Kentucky

Procure-To-Pay Software In The Digital Age: An Exploration And Analysis Of Efficiency Gains And Cybersecurity Risks In Modern Procurement Systems, Drew Lane

MPA/MPP/MPFM Capstone Projects

Procure-to-Pay (P2P) softwares are an integral part of the payment and procurement processing functions at large-scale governmental institutions. These softwares house all of the financial functions related to procurement, accounts payable, and often human resources, helping to facilitate and automate the process from initiation of a payment or purchase, to the actual disbursal of funds. Often, these softwares contain budgeting and financial reporting tools as part of the offering. As such an integral part of the financial process, these softwares obviously come at an immense cost from a set of reputable vendors. In the case of government, these vendors mainly …

The Local Government Financial Response To Natural Disasters In Kentucky, Lucas Taulbee 2019 University of Kentucky

The Local Government Financial Response To Natural Disasters In Kentucky, Lucas Taulbee

MPA/MPP/MPFM Capstone Projects

This study seeks to estimate the effect of disasters on the total receipts and total spending of county governments in Kentucky. In addition to estimating the effects of disasters on total receipts and total spending, this study also seeks to estimate the effects of disasters on specific categories of revenue (taxes, intergovernmental, etc.) and spending (transportation, recreation, general government, etc.). These effects are estimated using data on county budgets for 2007 through 2017 from the Kentucky Department for Local Government (DLG) and data on disaster declarations and public assistance grants from FEMA.

The principle findings of this study suggest that: …

Snapchat's Gift: Equity Culture In High-Tech Firms, Amy Deen Westbrook, David A. Westbrook 2019 Washburn University School of Law

Snapchat's Gift: Equity Culture In High-Tech Firms, Amy Deen Westbrook, David A. Westbrook

Journal Articles

Snap, Inc., the company that owns the platform Snapchat, controversially offered nonvoting common shares to the public in 2017. This Article asks what it means to invest in Snap or other (mostly technology-based) companies in which common shareholders collectibely have little or no power to influence corporate policy. In particular, why do such investors expect to be compensated? This Article explores the familiar rationales for equity investing, including stock appreciation and dividends, and the logical shortcomings of those rationales in these circumstances. Adopting Henry Manne's "two systems" approach to corporate affairs through both law and economics, we show that corporation …

Adapting Financial Technology Standards To Blockchain Platforms, Gabriel Bello 2019 Columbus State University

Adapting Financial Technology Standards To Blockchain Platforms, Gabriel Bello

Theses and Dissertations

Traditional payment systems have standards designed to keep transaction data secure, but blockchain systems are not in scope for such security standards. We compare the Payment Application Data Security Standard’s (PA-DSS) applicability towards transaction-supported blockchain platforms to test the standard’s applicability. By highlighting the differences in implementation on traditional and decentralized transaction platforms, we critique and adapt the standards to fit the decentralized model. In two case studies, we analyze the QTUM and Ethereum blockchain platforms’ industry compliance, as their payment platforms support transactions equivalent to that of applications governed by the PA-DSS. We determine QTUM’s and Ethereum’s capabilities to …

An Examination Of The Stock Market's Effect On Economic Inequality, Nicholas Golina 2019 The University of Akron

An Examination Of The Stock Market's Effect On Economic Inequality, Nicholas Golina

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

The economic literature on economic inequality has shown that it can negatively impact aggregate demand because it indicates a higher concentration of wealth in the hands of the top 10% as opposed to the poor and middle class, who are more likely to consume. The literature has identified many factors that can lead to increasing inequality. The stock market could be one of those factors since it can either create an upward redistributive effect towards the top 10% or redistributive effect towards the middle class. This paper tested the effect of the stock market on inequality. This study contributes to …

Occupational Fraud: Executive Compensation And Enforcements Against Auditors And Perpetrators., Erlina Papakroni 2019 West Virginia University

Occupational Fraud: Executive Compensation And Enforcements Against Auditors And Perpetrators., Erlina Papakroni

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This dissertation is comprised of three studies that examine the association of executive compensation with financial statement fraud and enforcements pursued against the independent auditor and the principal perpetrators when occupational fraud is detected.

The first study examines competing, though non-mutually exclusive, hypotheses for the path that equity compensation follows on its way to financial misreporting. We find that firms that experience financial statement fraud pay their executives higher levels and a higher proportion of equity compensation across the entire executive’s tenure. This starts in the first year of an executive’s tenure and continues up until the fraud period. These …

Essays On Financial Incentives, Tyson D. Van Alfen 2019 University of Kentucky

Essays On Financial Incentives, Tyson D. Van Alfen

Theses and Dissertations--Finance and Quantitative Methods

In my first chapter, I use a novel dataset of customer reviews from Amazon.com to study the impact of managerial myopia on product market reputation. Using exogenous variation due to the timing of CEO equity vesting events, I show that short-term incentive shocks predict declines in reputation. A changing product market lineup and a deterioration of existing products are two mechanisms through which reputation is affected. The effect is larger when the CEO has other short-term concerns and when the firm has a low reputation in the product market. However, higher advertising expenses mitigate the negative reputational effect among consumers. …

Relationship Between Sba Loans, Personal Capital Finances, Government Regulations, And Business Profitability, Jennifer E. White

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Women-owned small businesses have grown 58% between 2007 and 2018. Some female owners of small businesses lack strategies to obtain financial capital to continue growth and raise profitability for their businesses. The purpose of this secondary data analysis was to examine the relationship between access to sources of financial capital, government regulations and business profitability. The resource-based theory was the theoretical framework for this quantitative ex-post facto study. Archival data from the 2016 Annual Survey of Entrepreneurs were collected. Data were analyzed using multiple linear regression. Results of the multiple linear regression analysis indicated a full model, containing two predictor …

The Liquidity Cost Of Private Equity Investments: Evidence From Secondary Market Transactions, Taylor Nadauld, Berk A. Sensoy, Keith Vorkink, Michael S. Weisbach

Faculty Publications

This paper uses proprietary data from a leading intermediary to explain the magnitude and determinants of transaction costs in the secondary market for private equity stakes. Most transactions occur at a discount to net asset value. Buyers average an annualized public market equivalent of 1.023 compared with 0.976 for sellers, implying that buyers outper- form sellers by a market-adjusted 5 percentage points annually. Both the cross-sectional pattern of transaction costs and the identity of sellers and buyers suggest that the market is one in which relatively flexible buyers earn returns by supplying liquidity to investors wishing to exit.

Modeling Genomes To Phenomes To Populations In A Changing Climate: The Need For Collaborative Networks, Nika Galic, Allyson G. Hindle, John P. Delong, Karen Watanabe, Valery Forbes, C. Loren Buck

School of Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications

Condensed Abstract

Climate is changing globally and its impacts can arise at different levels of biological organization; yet, cross-level consequences of climate change are still poorly understood. Designing effective environmental management and adaptation plans requires implementation of mechanistic models that span the biological hierarchy. Because biological systems are inherently complex and dynamic in nature, dealing with complexities efficiently necessitates simplification of systems or approximation of relevant processes, but there is little consensus on mathematical approaches to scale from genes to populations. Here we present an effort that aims to bring together groups that often do not interact, but that are …

An Empirical Examination Of Economic Determinants Of Financial Ceo Compensation: A Comparative Study On Pre And Post Financial Crisis Periods, Mahfuja Malik, Eunsup Daniel Shim

WCBT Faculty Publications

Inadequate risk monitoring and the executive incentive system of US financial institutions are considered to be significant factors in exacerbating the 2008 financial crisis, and regulators attempted to reform the executive compensation system in the post-crisis period. In this study, we conduct a comparative analysis of the economic determinants of the compensation for chief executive officers (CEOs) between the pre- and post-financial crisis periods, using data from US financial service institutions, since this is the sector that has been most affected by the financial crisis. We find that the mean values of total compensation and its incentive components, including cash …

How Does The Thai Stock Market Respond To Monetary And Fiscal Policy Shocks?, Suthawan Prukumpai, Yuthana Sethapramote 2019 Kasetsart University, Bangkok, Thailand

How Does The Thai Stock Market Respond To Monetary And Fiscal Policy Shocks?, Suthawan Prukumpai, Yuthana Sethapramote

DLSU Business & Economics Review

This study examines the impacts of monetary and fiscal policy on the Thai stock market using the structural vector autoregressive (SVAR) model. In addition to the data on the market aggregate level, we also consider the response of stock prices at the sectoral level. The empirical results show that the Thai stock market significantly responds to both monetary policy and fiscal policy. However, monetary policy has stronger effects on both real output and stock prices than those of fiscal policy. Fiscal policy shocks affect the stock market only for the next two to three quarters. In addition, sector indices wereused …

Legal Setbacks, Disbursement Sudden Stops, And Fiscal Stimulus: An Empirical Characterization Of A Recent Philippine Fiscal Experience, Lawrence B. Dacuycuy, Mariel Monica R. Sauler 2019 De La Salle University

Legal Setbacks, Disbursement Sudden Stops, And Fiscal Stimulus: An Empirical Characterization Of A Recent Philippine Fiscal Experience, Lawrence B. Dacuycuy, Mariel Monica R. Sauler

DLSU Business & Economics Review

Recognizing the importance of expanding fiscal spending programs and improving disbursement rates, the Aquino administration implemented the Disbursement Acceleration Program (DAP) in 2011. Acting as a fiscal stimulus but packing a fiscal surprise, the program has reportedly succeeded in improving fiscal expenditure performance until the Supreme Court stopped it based on constitutional grounds. While there were official claims that it was effective in spurring growth, no study has been offered to investigate plausible mechanisms leading to expansions in output. This study proposes the use ofa dynamic stochastic general equilibrium (DSGE)model to stochastically simulate and compute simple fiscal multipliers to understand …

Time-Varying Weather Effects On Thai Government Bond Returns, Anya Khanthavit 2019 Thammasat University, Bangkok 10200, Thailand

Time-Varying Weather Effects On Thai Government Bond Returns, Anya Khanthavit

DLSU Business & Economics Review

This study proposed a state-space model that allows time-varying weather effects on asset returns. It resolves the model misspecification of the unrealistic, fixed effect assumption commonly made by previous weather studies. The model was applied to examine the weather effects on Thai government bond returns from July 2, 2001, to December 30, 2015. Kalman filtering was used in the estimation. The study found that the weather effects were time-varying. They were wandering in the early sample period but disappearing in the later period. The effects were not co-integrated with the market’s inefficiency levels.

Are The Public Subsidies Of Professional Sports Stadiums Worth The Cost Of Building Them?, Spencer Abraham 2019 Claremont Colleges

Are The Public Subsidies Of Professional Sports Stadiums Worth The Cost Of Building Them?, Spencer Abraham

CMC Senior Theses

The results generated by this research argue that, in the future, communities should take into account crime and other social costs as they analyze the merits of investing in new sports complexes and that a failure to consider these factors could constitute a serious dereliction on the parts of the public officials who are ultimately responsible for new facility investment decision making. Moreover, both this research and previous studies of the economic effects of new sports facilities, strongly indicate that public entities considering funding new facilities do a more in depth independent study of the likely economic consequences of their …
