What Is The Relationship Between Immigrant Enclaves And Transnational Diaspora Entrepreneurial Activity In Ireland?, Osa–Godwin Osaghae

Doctoral

This thesis is a pioneering study, exploring the relationship between immigrant enclaves (IE) and transnational diaspora entrepreneurship (TDE) in the unique context of a Nigerian immigrant community in Dublin. The study reviews the relevant literature in the field of immigrant entrepreneurship, adopting principles from the most significant studies in order to develop a conceptual model for understanding the relationship between an IE and TDE. The study employed qualitative semi-structured interviews with eleven participants in order to generate data, which was then processed through the six phases of thematic analysis described by Braun and Clarke. The researcher’s own experience as a …

Emotional Intelligence And Knowledge Management: A Necessary Link?, Isabel Rechberg 2019 CUNY College of Staten Island

Emotional Intelligence And Knowledge Management: A Necessary Link?, Isabel Rechberg

Publications and Research

This theoretical paper studies the effect of emotional intelligence (EI) on individuals' participation in knowledge management (KM) practices. Individuals are the sources of knowledge, and EI may advance individuals' self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, and relationship-management skills, which in turn positively impacts their knowledge processing behavior. The argument is made that knowledge creation is enabled through individuals' ability to recognize and correctly interpret emotional and environmental clues. Knowledge sharing is facilitated through individuals' interpersonal, communication, and team-working skills, enabled through self-awareness and social awareness. Knowledge is retained in organizations where EI enacts individuals' corporate citizenship behavior, adaptability, and job satisfaction. Where …

Identifying At-Risk Clients For Xyz Packaging, Co., Eduardo Carlos Cantu Medellin, Mihir Parikh, Christopher Graves, Brendon Jones 2019 Southern Methodist University

Identifying At-Risk Clients For Xyz Packaging, Co., Eduardo Carlos Cantu Medellin, Mihir Parikh, Christopher Graves, Brendon Jones

SMU Data Science Review

We present a multi-algorithmic modeling approach for the identification of at-risk customers for XYZ Packaging Inc. We define at-risk customers as those having declining seasonally adjusted gross income forecasts which are a strong indicator of impending customer churn. Customer retention is an area of interest regardless of industry but is especially vital in commodity-based low margin industries. We employ traditional Autoregressive Integrated Moving Average (ARIMA) and Anomaly Detection algorithms for discriminating changes in customer revenue patterns. Ultimately, we identify a meaningful proportion of clients whose forward-looking quarterly demand can be predicted within an actionable degree of accuracy.

Assigning Triaged Patients To Treatment Rooms In A Hospital Emergency Department, Barry E. King E. King, Tyler Pollard, Jennifer Rice, Jane Siegler

Scholarship and Professional Work - Business

The assigning of new arrivals at a hospital emergency department to treatment rooms was examined. New patients are summarily triaged and assigned to a treatment room based on severity of their symptoms, the grade of a treatment room, and an exponential benefit curve that encourages the solver to schedule the most severe cases early. SAS’s OPTMODEL modeling language was employed to build the model and SAS’s MILP solver was used to perform the scheduling. Up to thirty patients were optimally assigned to depict the example of a large emergency department.

Feasibility Of Collaborative Alliance Association For Non-Competitive Small Business Contractors, Brody Allen Gill

Construction Management

Small business construction contracting firms around the country struggle with growing their business successfully. This is a result of unknown results from new business practices and few resources to initiate programs that can improve productivity and efficiency. A simple solution could give small business construction contractors the opportunity to share ideas, compare company analytics and promote professional networking in a non-competitive, collaborative alliance. The goal of this project is to determine if a collaborative alliance association using data benchmarking would be an effective solution for non-competitive small business contractors to grow their businesses. Thereafter being proven effective, is such an …

Design As Entrepreneurship: Towards A Design-Specific Entrepreneurship Framework, Con Kennedy 2019 Technological University Dublin

Design As Entrepreneurship: Towards A Design-Specific Entrepreneurship Framework, Con Kennedy

Conference papers

Current thinking on entrepreneurship states there is no specific link between the entrepreneur and their enterprise. Design is an individual creative act; therefore, the practitioner is not separate from their idiosyncratic process. The Designer is the product offering. Designers form Design Enterprises, meaning that with this aspect of inseparability, the Design Entrepreneur is a different kind of entrepreneur than currently discussed. The literature on the topic discusses design as a creative output, not as entrepreneurship output. Like any enterprise, Design Enterprises must be profitable. There are many entrepreneurship processes, none of which seem to address the needs of the Design …

The Bluebox Practicum: Integrating Technology, Culture, And Academic Service-Learning, Charles Braymen, Dustin Ormond

Jesuit Higher Education: A Journal

Advancing education in marginalized communities has been more difficult compared to more privileged communities due to the lack of infrastructure, which in part results in an absence of educational materials. The BlueBox Project was created to minimize this divide by bringing a wealth of information to these communities. Using a small digital computer, faculty, staff, and students across many disciplines built the BlueBox, a stand-alone digital library which hosts an array of books, articles, educational games, and videos to inspire learning in a variety of subjects including science, technology, math, music, and literature. The BlueBox is powered by solar energy, …

A Next-Day, Brief E-Survey Overcomes The Excessive Variability Seen In Cahps-Style Emergency Department Surveys So That Individual Physician Performance Can Be Assessed On A Regular Basis, Tom Scaletta, Eva Hare, Christopher Sung Lee

Patient Experience Journal

Traditional CAHPS-style emergency department (ED) surveys result in excessive variability when assessing individual physician performance. The objective of this study is to measure the variability of a brief, electronic survey (e-survey). The study team also measured the association of individual physicians to demographic data, physician and patient factors, and a physician burnout assessment tool. Data from SmartContact (SmartER, La Grange, IL) is a next-day, e-survey that takes about 30-seconds to complete. This tool was used by a hospital-employed emergency department (ED) group during calendar year 2017 across 2 EDs and 37 physicians.1,2 Variability was estimated regarding raw patient experience …

Job Transitioning Experiences Of Blue-Collar Employees After Federal Downsizing, Eduardo Hurtado 2019 Walden University

Job Transitioning Experiences Of Blue-Collar Employees After Federal Downsizing, Eduardo Hurtado

Walden Faculty and Staff Publications

Downsizing, realignment, and closure of military bases have forced many low-skilled, blue-collar federal employees into involuntary job loss and job transition. The impact of involuntary job loss on blue-collar workers has been linked to stress and other adverse psychological effects. There is gap in the literature regarding the lived experiences of federal blue-collar employees following downsizing of military bases. The purpose of this qualitative, interpretive phenomenological study was to examine lived experiences of job loss and job transition for federal blue-collar employees following downsizing of military bases. Schlossberg’s transition theory provided a conceptual framework for the study. Ten ex-federal blue-collar …

Together Apart: Influences And Barriers To Engagement Among Remote Workers, Stacey-Robin H. Johnson 2019 CUNY Bernard M Baruch College

Together Apart: Influences And Barriers To Engagement Among Remote Workers, Stacey-Robin H. Johnson

Student Theses and Dissertations

Organizations recognize the importance of having employees who do more than 'show up' for work. Rather, the goal is to have employees who will adapt to, embody, and promote the values, agenda, and strategic purposes of the organization beyond their work life. In the efforts around engagement, there are key influences in the organizational lifespan of an employee that can inspire or discourage engagement attitudes and behaviors.

Remote workers (defined here as those who work outside of a central, collective work setting) present unique challenges, the most pressing being maintaining a sense of connection and inclusion among the group in …

Optimize The Effectiveness Of Recruiting Campaigns, Ryan A. Talk, Lakshmi Bobbillapati, Marshall Coyle

SMU Data Science Review

Abstract. Recruiting marketing plays an important role in the talent acquisition strategy today. To find the best candidates, companies make substantial investments through numerous recruiting agencies, job boards, and internal systems such as Indeed, LinkedIn, Monster, Talent Communities. In this paper we obtained a company’s LinkedIn Job Posting data to try to predict the number of visits they will receive for each job posting based on the time of the year it is posted. We compare AR(1), AR(2), AR(52), MA(1), and ARMA(1, 1) time series methods to a baseline of a persistence model. We found that out of these 5 …

Leveraging Reviews To Improve User Experience, Anthony Schams, Iram Bakhtiar, Cristina Stanley

SMU Data Science Review

In this paper, we will explore and present a method of finding characteristics of a restaurant using its reviews through machine learning algorithms. We begin by building models to predict the ratings of individual reviews using text and categorical features. This is to examine the efficacy of the algorithms to the task. Both XGBoost and logistic regression will be examined. With these models, our goal is then to identify key phrases in reviews that are correlated with positive and negative experience. Our analysis makes use of review data publicly made available by Yelp. Key bigrams extracted were non-specific to the …

Crude Oil Price Prediction With Decision Tree Based Regression Approach, Engu Chen, Xin James He 2019 Fairfield University

Crude Oil Price Prediction With Decision Tree Based Regression Approach, Engu Chen, Xin James He

Journal of International Technology and Information Management

Crude oil is an essential commodity for industry and the prediction of its price is crucial for many business entities and government organizations. While there have been quite a few conventional statistical models to forecast oil prices, we find that there is not much research using decision tree models to predict crude oil prices. In this research, we develop decision tree models to forecast crude oil prices. In addition to historical crude oil price time series data, we also use some predictor variables that would potentially affect crude oil prices, including crude oil demand and supply, and monthly GDP and …
