Do Democratic Governments Improve Environmental Quality?, 2015 University of Montana
Do Democratic Governments Improve Environmental Quality?, Yoonsoo Nam
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
My research question is whether democratic countries improve the environment. This research question is important because many nowadays people are more than ever concerned about environmental quality, and researchers have produced mixed results of democratic governments’ effects on the environment. As an attempt to contribute to this area of research, I implement three different types of heterogeneity in the relationships between democratic countries and environmental quality. These three different types of heterogeneity include different environmental outcomes, separate components of democracy, and countries with different income levels. By using these three different types of heterogeneity, I may better understand the mechanisms …

Pendidikan, Human Capital Ataukah Signaling? Studi Kasus Indonesia, Mohamad Fahmi, Yeni Oktavia Mulyono
Jurnal Ekonomi dan Pembangunan Indonesia
This study aims to test whether the behavior of Indonesian people in determining education is the manifestation of human capital theory or signaling theory. Using the ordinary least square (OLS) model and the Indonesian Family Life Survey (IFLS) 2007 data, we find that both theories mutually have effect to influence the behavior of Indonesian people to determine their education.
Nonparametric Threshold Regression: Estimation And Inference, 2015 Singapore Management University
Nonparametric Threshold Regression: Estimation And Inference, Daniel J. Henderson, Christopher F. Parmeter, Liangjun Su
Research Collection School Of Economics
The present work describes a simple approach to estimating the location of a threshold/changepoint in a nonparametric regression. This model has connections both to the time-series and regressiondiscontinuity literatures. The estimator leverages a simple decomposition, giving it the form of asemiparametric smooth coefficient model. Optimal bandwidth selection and a suite of testing facilitiesare also presented. Several empirical examples are provided to illustrate the implementation of themethods discussed here.
Wellbeing Of Singapore’S Youths, 2015 Singapore Management University
Wellbeing Of Singapore’S Youths, Kong Weng Ho
Research Collection School Of Economics
Given Singapore’s focus on human capital investment in its residents, the nation’s youths have experienced increases in their financial, educational, and physical wellbeing. However, how have our youths fared in their emotional and mental wellbeing? Figures from the World Values Survey show reported a gradual decline in life satisfaction for both general population and youths. Data from four waves of the National Youth Survey confirms this trend. This chapter explores and examines the non-economic channels that may have countered the positive influence of economic success on the wellbeing of youths, namely, changing family structure, heightened stressors, shifting life goals, time …
Aggregate Consumption And Debt Accumulation: An Empirical Examination Of Us Household Behavior, 2015 Singapore Management University
Aggregate Consumption And Debt Accumulation: An Empirical Examination Of Us Household Behavior, Yun K. Kim, Mark Setterfield, Yuan Mei
Research Collection School Of Economics
The outbreak of the financial crisis in 2008 witnessed a significant contraction in US consumption spending, as households began deleveraging following a period marked by historically high levels of household borrowing. These events call into question the canonical life-cycle theory of consumption, with its benign view of debt as a neutral instrument of optimal intertemporal expenditure smoothing. This paper draws attention to an alternative, post-Keynesian account of consumption spending in which current income, household borrowing and household indebtedness all affect current consumption. Central to the analysis is an empirical investigation of US consumption spending since the 1950s. The results of …
Semiparametric Analysis In Conditionally Independent Multivariate Mixture Models, 2015 Singapore Management University
Semiparametric Analysis In Conditionally Independent Multivariate Mixture Models, T. Wrobel, Denis H. Y. Leung, J. Qin, T. Hettmansperger
Research Collection School Of Economics
The conditional independence assumption is commonly used in multivariate mixture models in behavioral research. We propose an exponential tilt model to analyze data from a multivariate mixture distribution with conditionally independent components. In this model, the log ratio of the density functions of the components is modeled as a quadratic function in the observations. There are a number of advantages in this approach. First, except for the exponential tilt assumption, the marginal distributions of the observations can be completely arbitrary. Second, unlike some previous methods, which require the multivariate data to be discrete, modeling can be performed based on the …
A Class Of Symmetric And Quadratic Utility Functions Generating Giffen Demand, 2015 Singapore Management University
A Class Of Symmetric And Quadratic Utility Functions Generating Giffen Demand, Massimiliano Landi
Research Collection School Of Economics
I provide a simple example of a quadratic utility function that generates a Giffen demand. The utility function is symmetric, increasing and concave. Interestingly, the Giffen effect arises in the subspace where the utility function is strictly increasing and strictly concave. A full characterization of the parameter conditions under which the Giffen demand arises is provided.
A Prospect Theory Of Power Transition: Why Power Transition Does Not Imply War?, 2015 New York University
A Prospect Theory Of Power Transition: Why Power Transition Does Not Imply War?, Huan Wang, Yi Zhang
Research Collection School Of Economics
We present a prospect theory model to explain why power transitions do not necessarily lead to war. We find that three major mechanisms prevent the occurrence of potential power transition wars. First, the dual boiling frog effects occurring in the middle range of capability catching-up rate prevent a dominant state from preempting and a rising state from challenging the other side. Second, divergent expectations for favorable comparative growth advantage motivate both parties to keep the status quo. Third, the concerns of relative advantage deterioration over a third party in the post-war power structure help deter both parties from starting a …

Measuring Globalization: Better Trade Statistics For Better Policy, Susan N. Houseman Editor, Michael J. Mandel Editor
Upjohn Press
Understanding the impacts of globalization requires good data, and national statistical systems were not designed to measure many of the transactions occurring in today’s global economy. The chapters in this volume and its companion volume identify biases and gaps in national statistics, examine the magnitude of the problems they pose, and propose solutions to address significant biases and fill key data gaps.
Testing Linearity Using Power Transforms Of Regressors, 2015 Singapore Management University
Testing Linearity Using Power Transforms Of Regressors, Yae In Baek, Jin Seo Cho, Peter C. B. Phillips
Research Collection School Of Economics
We develop a method of testing linearity using power transforms of regressors, allowing for stationary processes and time trends. The linear model is a simplifying hypothesis that derives from the power transform model in three different ways, each producing its own identification problem. We call this modeling difficulty the trifold identification problem and show that it may be overcome using a test based on the quasi-likelihood ratio (QLR) statistic. More specifically, the QLR statistic may be approximated under each identification problem and the separate null approximations may be combined to produce a composite approximation that embodies the linear model hypothesis. …
Specification Testing For Transformation Models With An Application To Generalized Accelerated Failure-Time Models, 2015 Boston College
Specification Testing For Transformation Models With An Application To Generalized Accelerated Failure-Time Models, Arthur Lewbel, Xun Lu, Liangjun Su
Research Collection School Of Economics
This paper provides a nonparametric test of the specification of a transformation model. Specifically, we test whether an observable outcome Y is monotonic in the sum of a function of observable covariates X plus an unobservable error U. Transformation models of this form are commonly assumed in economics, including, e.g., standard specifications of duration models and hedonic pricing models. Our test statistic is asymptotically normal under local alternatives and consistent against nonparametric alternatives violating the implied restriction. Monte Carlo experiments show that our test performs well in finite samples. We apply our results to test for specifications of generalized accelerated …

Economics Department Faculty Publications
In 2000, the ASEAN member countries signed the UN Millennium Declaration to eradicate extreme poverty in the world by 2015 through the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). The MDGs represented the global vision of reducing poverty in its various dimensions, and they were mainstreamed in the process of building the ASEAN Socio-cultural Community, which had a similar target date of 2015.1 The new Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) framework approved in 2015 goes beyond the MDG agenda, which focused solely on poverty, to also include inequality. In recent years, inequality has been worsening amidst rapid economic growth and falling …
Three Essays On Financial Econometrics, 2015 Singapore Management University
Three Essays On Financial Econometrics, Jiang Liang
Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)
This dissertation develops several econometric techniques to address three issues in financial economics, namely, constructing a real estate price index, estimating structural break points, and estimating integrated variance in the presence of market microstructure noise and the corresponding microstructure noise function. Chapter 2 develops a new methodology for constructing a real estate price index that utilizes all transaction price information, encompassing both single-sales and repeat-sales. The method is less susceptible to specification error than standard hedonic methods and is not subject to the sample selection bias involved in indexes that rely only on repeat sales. The methodology employs a model …
Cyclical Public Policy And Financial Factors, 2015 Singapore Management University
Cyclical Public Policy And Financial Factors, Vishrut Dhirendra Rana
Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)
The Great Recession of 2009 motivated a growing body of research on the quantitative modeling of financial factors and appropriate policy responses. This dissertation is a part of that line of research and looks at the quantitative macroeconomic effects of financial factors on business cycles. The dissertation uses quantitative macroeconomic general equilibrium models (popular dynamic stochastic general equilibrium (DSGE)) that allow flexibility in micro-founded modeling of macroeconomic environments. The dissertation captures financial factors through explicit modeling of financial intermediation, featuring costly state verification and collateral constraints as financial frictions. The first chapter offers a new quantitative model of credit cycles …

Indonesia Japan Economic Partnership Agreement (IJEPA) is the first bilateral economic agreement for Indonesia. IJEPA is expected to increase Indonesia manufacture industry competition because the establishment of USDFS and MIDEC. Post IJEPA, Price-cost margins (PCM) fluctuated. PCM has been generally used as a competition indicator, because PCM related to average profit of an industry. This study uses panel data of large and small industry within 2004-2012 periods. This study conclude that IJEPA able to make PCM of manufacture industry fall through efficiency of input factors use, the cost of materials price downfall, and economies of scale in certain industries.
The Determinants Of Chinese Household Saving During 1978-2012, 2015 College of Saint Benedict/Saint John's University
The Determinants Of Chinese Household Saving During 1978-2012, Nan Zhi
Honors Theses, 1963-2015
This project focuses on how the household saving ratio changes from 1978-2013 in China and what factors caused the changes. Based China’s household saving rate changes from 1953-2000 by using the framework of the life-cycle hypothesis, Modigliani concluded that the rate of growth income and the demographic structure are the major determinant of the rate of private saving. This project attempts to extend Modigliani’s research using the data after 2000 and take changes of Chinese policy and additional factors into consideration. Estimates of coefficients of saving function will be obtained by using OLS method to analyze the relationship between household …
