Leading A Multi-Generational Workforce: Understanding Generational Differences For Effective Communication, Barbara J. Smyrl
Professional Projects
Today’s workforce consists of individuals from four generations each bringing different perspectives and values to the workplace. The purpose of this qualitative study was to examine the generational differences to gain an understanding which may help managers communicate effectively with each generational cohort. This study uses the narrative research method. Following a review of the literature on the subject of multi-generational work teams, the study tells the story of four individuals, one person from each of the four generational cohorts. Each of the individuals has experienced the phenomenon of working on a multi-generational work team. The stories shared reveal the …

'You're Lying To Jesus!': Humor And Play In A Discussion About Homelessness, L. David Ritchie
Communication Faculty Publications and Presentations
This study applies recent theories about humor to a sample of talk among a group of young adults about the issues and problems associated with homelessness. In this conversation, participants demonstrate a pattern of joking and language play that expresses a complex and ambivalent set of attitudes and feelings toward homelessness and toward the homeless as both outcasts and refugees from conventional society. Humor is used both to express complex responses to homelessness and as a tool for managing the tone and direction of the conversation. The results demonstrate how the identification of patterns of joking and wordplay can provide …
Competition And Interpersonal Conflict In Same-Sex Platonic Friendships, 2011 Western Michigan University
Competition And Interpersonal Conflict In Same-Sex Platonic Friendships, Ewa Urban
The Hilltop Review
This research explores the connection between competition and distributive and integrative conflict messages in same-sex platonic friendships. The study is a partial replication of Messman and Mikesell’s (2000) examination of competition and interpersonal conflict in dating relationships. The competitive behaviors of same-sex friends examined here are compared with those of dating couples as explored by Messman and Mikesell. Findings of the current research indicate that increased competition between same-sex friends is linked to a rise in distributive conflict tactics as well as to a reduction in integrative messages, which is consistent with Messman and Mikesell’s results. The current study also …

The role of ethos in the communication process as discussed by Michael Hyde in The Ethos of Rhetoric suggests we reexamine the role of space in the Communication Center. Such a space should be created to facilitate and nurture the speech-composing and practicing process through feedback from individuals or groups while also allowing students to move from public to private places. Our chapter will address this use of space by utilizing research conducted in the groundbreaking Noel Studio for Academic Creativity. Our research uses control and experimental groups from communication classes to investigate the relationship between space and oral communication

Ugur Demiray
One of the ways in which distance education is capable of reaching online learners is the basis and method of meta-communication. Therefore, it is important to understand how to design reflective online conversations and how to implement a diverse milieu for prospective online learners so that they are able to transfer their information, knowledge, and learning from theoretical forms to real life experiences.
Meta-Communication for Reflective Online Conversations: Models for Distance Educations discusses the potential of meta-communication models for building and managing reflective online conversations among distance learners. This book unites models for meta-communication, distance education, and reflective online conversations …

The Effects Of Prior Knowledge And Stealing Thunder On Interpersonal Social Attraction, 2011 University of Tennessee - Knoxville
The Effects Of Prior Knowledge And Stealing Thunder On Interpersonal Social Attraction, Kathrine Amanda Williams
Masters Theses
This study first examines the effectiveness of stealing thunder in increasing the target’s liking for the discloser. The study further inspects liking relative to the amount of information known about the discloser prior to their initial interaction. Additionally, the target’s perception of the negativity of the information revealed is observed. 120 subjects participated in an experiment during which they were either exposed to the negative information via the confederate or the experimenter or were not exposed at all. Results, although interesting, were largely inconsistent with the hypotheses. This could have been due to several factors namely, poor experimental execution and …
Advanced Meeting Facilitation Techniques, 2011 University of Georgia School of Law
Advanced Meeting Facilitation Techniques, Carol A. Watson, Wendy Moore
Presentations
As many librarians learned in last year's AALL presentation on facilitation, a well-facilitated meeting can transform a regular work session into an extraordinarily productive event. Participants learned that a well-crafted agenda, thoughtful ground rules, optimal meeting space, and detailed minutes can all set the stage for a successful meeting.
However, meetings can still go awry. A poorly facilitated meeting can make everyone dread meetings even if the meeting has been well-planned. Managing or facilitating behaviors is the final essential ingredient for success. Have you ever been in a meeting that is monopolized by one individual? Or someone offers a suggestion …
A Qualitative Study Examining Tensions In Interdoctor Telephone Consultations, 2011 McMaster University
A Qualitative Study Examining Tensions In Interdoctor Telephone Consultations, Anupma Wadhwa, Lorelei Lingard
Lorelei Lingard
OBJECTIVE: Communication skills have gained increasing attention in medical education. Much of the existing literature and medical curricula addresses issues of doctor-patient communication. The critical importance of communication between health professionals, however, is now coming under the spotlight. The interdoctor telephone consultation is a common health care setting in which health professional communication skills are exercised. Breakdowns in this communication commonly occur and, surprisingly, this skill is not formally addressed in medical training. This study sought to clarify the communication issues that can occur during interdoctor telephone consultations in order to inform future educational initiatives in this domain. METHODS: Data …
Towards Safer Interprofessional Communication: Constructing A Model Of "Utility" From Preoperative Team Briefings, 2011 University of Toronto
Towards Safer Interprofessional Communication: Constructing A Model Of "Utility" From Preoperative Team Briefings, Lorelei Lingard, Sarah Whyte, Sherry Espin, G. Baker, Beverley Orser, Diane Doran
Lorelei Lingard
"Improved team communication" is broadly advocated in the discourse on safety but rarely supported by a precise understanding of the relationship between specific communication practices and concrete improvements in collaborative work processes. We sought to improve such understanding by analyzing the discourse arising from structured preoperative team briefings among surgeons, nurses, and anesthesiologists prior to general surgery procedures. Analysis of observers' fieldnotes from 302 briefings yielded a two-part model of communicative "utility", defined as the visible impact of communication on team awareness and behavior. "Informational utility" occurred when team awareness or knowledge was improved by provision of new information, explicit …

A Theory-Based Instrument To Evaluate Team Communication In The Operating Room: Balancing Measurement Authenticity And Reliability, Lorelei Lingard, Glenn Regehr, Sherry Espin, Sarah Whyte
Lorelei Lingard
BACKGROUND: Breakdown in communication among members of the healthcare team threatens the effective delivery of health services, and raises the risk of errors and adverse events. AIM: To describe the process of developing an authentic, theory-based evaluation instrument that measures communication among members of the operating room team by documenting communication failures. METHODS: 25 procedures were viewed by 3 observers observing in pairs, and records of events on each communication failure observed were independently completed by each observer. Each record included the type and outcome of the failure (both selected from a checklist of options), as well as the time …

The Rhetorical 'Turn' In Medical Education: What Have We Learned And Where Are We Going?, Lorelei Lingard
Lorelei Lingard
This paper presents a critical reflection on the contributions and challenges associated with one rhetorical approach to studying teaching and learning communication in health professions education. A rhetorical approach treats language as a social act, and attends to the role of language in establishing professional identities and relationships. The research has produced insights into the use of standard communication formats to teach novices, the nature of socialization on clinical teams, and the relationship between communication patterns and patient safety. Challenges and emerging questions include the problem of accounting for the material dimensions of communication in a rhetorical model, grappling with …

Social Media: The Use Of Facebook And Twitter To Impact Political Unrest In The Middle East Through The Power Of Collaboration, Sarah Danielle Goodman
Journalism
The power of social media sites like Facebook and Twitter are often overlooked and unaccounted for. The revolutionary and unprecedented political changes in the Middle East have changed the way the world uses and now views these platforms. This study addresses the transformation of both the Middle East and social media, alongside each other. In addition, it discusses how young activists utilized these tools in order to unite and therefore produce radical alteration of Middle Eastern governments, what these governments did in an attempt to preserve control and how the United States got involved.
