Pharmacy Faculty Articles and Research
PURPOSE In California, the passage of SB493 in July of 2013 was a milestone in advancing pharmacy practice. Among other things, the new legislation allows pharmacists to provide routine immunizations without a protocol and furnish medications for international travelers for conditions not requiring a diagnosis. When developing a pharmacist-run travel health service, consideration must be given to multiple important factors, including pharmacist training, physician partnership, logistics, from scheduling to documentation, and the resources necessary to provide a travel health service.5 This article sets out to provide guidance and insight to pharmacists seeking to implement a travel health service.

The Impact Of Autoimmune Disease On Breast Cancer Survival, 2017 University of South Carolina
The Impact Of Autoimmune Disease On Breast Cancer Survival, Samantha Truman
Theses and Dissertations
Background Breast cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death for women in developed countries, while autoimmune disease effects approximately 10 million people in the United States, of which approximately 80% are female. Both diseases are associated with hormonal risk factors and are related to the divergent effects of the cellular and humoral immunity that is associated with the T-helper 1 and T-helper 2 immune response. To investigate the potential implications that autoimmune disease may have on breast cancer-specific mortality, we have conducted a population-based retrospective cohort study of women who were diagnosed with breast cancer between January 1, …

Effectiveness Of Community-Based Eibi Treatment: A Longitudinal Analysis Of Adaptive Behavior And Language Outcomes, John Kuntz
Theses and Dissertations
Autism spectrum disorders (ASDs) are a group of lifelong, neurodevelopmental disorders characterized by deficits in social interaction, communication, relationship development and by the presence of repetitive or stereotypical behaviors including restricted interests. Continued advances in understanding treatment outcomes and broadening access to effective treatment is critical to improving the quality of life of children with autism and their families and minimizing the cost associated with care. The overall aim of this study is to assess the effectiveness of a community-based implementation of an Early Intensive Behavioral Intervention (EIBI) treatment program through a large-sample, longitudinal secondary analysis of administrative data. Additionally, …
Biomarkers Of Sepsis: A Retrospective Approach, 2017 The University of Akron
Biomarkers Of Sepsis: A Retrospective Approach, Jose M. Roberts
Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects
Background: Biomarkers are taking the spotlight in becoming the norm for early diagnoses. Sepsis is an inflammatory disease that increases metabolic rate in children. The first biomarker is hyponatremia. Hyponatremia is a frequent electrolyte imbalance in clinical practice, often observed in children with inflammatory disease and infection. Presence of hyponatremia is associated with electrical signaling imbalances, inflammation and renal dysfunction. The clinical value of hyponatremia in pediatric patients is unknown. The C-reactive protein is a second biomarker. Its presence signifies that necrotic cells and inflammation are present.
Objectives: To evaluate the use of biomarkers in children seen in the Emergency …

COMPLEMENTARY AND ALTERNATIVE MEDICINE (CAM) AND ADOLESCENT BODY MASS INDEX (BMI): A NATIONAL POPULATION-BASED STUDY
Abstract
Background
Childhood obesity rates in the United States have remained around 17% since the 1990s - this figure translates to an estimated 12.7 million obese children. Maintaining a healthy weight through adolescence may limit subsequent health risks in adulthood. Complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) encompasses a variety of non-pharmacological treatments and lifestyle choices that have been utilized in addition to or in place of typical Western medicine. The relationship between adolescent Body mass index (BMI) and the use of complementary and alternative medicine has …

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
For persons living with diagnosed HIV infection (PLWDHI) 50 years of age and older, in addition to living with diagnosed HIV infection, they are also at risk for age-related chronic conditions. Optimal management of these conditions in addition to HIV is needed if they hope to achieve positive health outcomes such as achieving durable viral suppression, which is the goal for persons receiving HIV treatment. For these patients, having adequate health related information, and the ability to access and navigate the healthcare system, would help them stay engaged and maintain adherence to HIV care. Factors that have been found to …

Pregnant Women With Congenital Heart Disease : Pregnancy Outcomes And Proximity To Care, 2017 University at Albany, State University of New York
Pregnant Women With Congenital Heart Disease : Pregnancy Outcomes And Proximity To Care, Lauren Schlichting
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
The number of adults living with congenital heart disease (CHD) now surpasses the number of children with the condition due to medical advances and the resulting increased survival rates in infants. However, much of the research focusing on proximity to specialty care for individuals with this complex condition has been with children. Pregnant women with these serious malformations are of particular concern, due to the stress of pregnancy on the circulatory system and the increase in risk for delivery complications. Few studies to date have described the healthcare utilization patterns at delivery and travel burden to specialty care for this …

The broad aims are: 1) to examine the association between maternal gestational weight gain and offspring weight at 1 year, while assessing the mediating role of birth weight; 2) to determine the association between breastfeeding practices and development of allergic conditions (eczema/skin allergy, hay fever/respiratory allergy, and asthma); and 3) to examine the association between breastfeeding and postpartum weight retention at 12 …
Socially Assigned Race, Reactions To Perceived Racial Discrimination And Type Ii Diabetes Mellitus, 2017 University of South Carolina
Socially Assigned Race, Reactions To Perceived Racial Discrimination And Type Ii Diabetes Mellitus, Jourdyn A. Lawrence
Theses and Dissertations
Background: Numerous studies have utilized race to document health inequities. As race is considered a social classification of persons based upon physical traits, studies have begun to consider socially assigned race defined as the race/ethnicity perceived by others. Socially assigned race may serve as the basis for differential or unfair treatment of persons ascribed to historically oppressed groups. Socially assigned race may also provide additional insight into racial health disparities, particularly among Latino populations who are commonly defined by their ethnicity. This study assesses the relationship between self-identified and socially assigned race/ethnicity and tests the moderating effects of emotional and …
Exploring Job Satisfaction And Preceptorship Capacity Among Applied Epidemiologists, 2017 Georgia Southern University
Exploring Job Satisfaction And Preceptorship Capacity Among Applied Epidemiologists, Jessica C. Arrazola
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Job satisfaction is important to consider when developing strategies for recruitment and retention. The Public Health Workforce Interests and Needs Survey (PH WINS) conducted in 2014 was the first nationally representative assessment of the state public health workforce. Prior to this assessment, the job satisfaction of state agency public health workers and preceptor capacity had not been measured. This study fills the current research gaps by studying the job satisfaction among the applied epidemiology workforce, identifying factors influencing job satisfaction, and the describing the preceptorship capacity among epidemiologists. This research is based on the 2014 PH WINS data. The analysis …

Immunization Safety: Addressing Parental Safety Concerns, 2017 University of Vermont
Immunization Safety: Addressing Parental Safety Concerns, Andrew Gallagher
Family Medicine Clerkship Student Projects
Since 1998, when a fraudulent research paper alleged a connection between the MMR vaccine and autism, increasing numbers of parents are refusing routine childhood vaccinations. Recent research has shown parents’ top vaccine-related concerns included the number of vaccines during the first 2 years of life, administration of too many vaccines in a single doctor visit, and a possible link between vaccines and autism. More than 10% of parents of young children refuse or delay vaccinations, with most believing that delaying vaccine doses is safer than providing them in accordance with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s recommended vaccination.
