Using Focus Groups In Delphi Method To Conduct Participatory Research: Implications For Extension, Yulia Lamoureaux, Julia Van Soelen Kim, Vikram Koundinya
The Journal of Extension
In this article, we describe an innovative way of using the Delphi method with community stakeholders. We modified the traditional Delphi method by conducting three consecutive virtual focus groups in combination with anonymous surveys at the end of each round. Focus groups provided a safe environment to exchange perspectives, express divergence of opinions, and explore areas of agreement, while surveys allowed the opportunity to express opinions anonymously. Extension practitioners can employ this innovative approach to the Delphi method to facilitate knowledge exchange, discussion, and dialogical consensus-seeking in an interactive focus group setting to gain more nuanced qualitative results.

An Analysis: Interpersonal Conflict Resolution In Children's Television, Molly Griffith, Yared Alemu
Concordia Journal of Communication Research
Children in the United States today are consuming television at a vastly higher rate than we have seen before (Sigman, 2012). Due to this hands off approach, there has been an increase in parents' cognition of what television their children are consuming which includes both entertainment television or educational television. The researchers highlighted the importance of teaching proper interpersonal conflict resolution to children through the television they are consuming as they learn through all observations. We highlighted the types of conflicts that are depicted in the children's show Bluey which is an educational children's television series produced in Australia. Researchers …

Zooming Towards Rapid Qualitative Research For Implementation Science, 2024 University of Toledo
Zooming Towards Rapid Qualitative Research For Implementation Science, Varsha Vedapudi, Mary Byrnes, Ted Skolarus, Kristian Stensland
Health Behavior Research
Optimal implementation research and practice often relies on rapidly performing, analyzing, and interpreting qualitative work such as interviews. Performing interviews in person and with traditional approaches to transcription can present substantial burdens, including logistics of in-person meetings, and the cost and time of both conducting and transcribing interviews. Recent advances in language processing technology coupled with technocultural shifts largely due to the COVID pandemic have decreased barriers to rapidly conducting qualitative implementation science work. In this viewpoint, we describe how using Zoom™ for videoconferencing with Otter.ai automated transcription allowed for rapid qualitative work in a qualitative implementation science study, and …
Motives For And Consequences Of Deception In Romantic Relationships, 2024 University of Arkansas, Fayetteville
Motives For And Consequences Of Deception In Romantic Relationships, Breanna De Leeuw
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The goals of this study are twofold. First, I examined the influence of sex, relational intimacy, and face concerns on deploying deceptive communication within romantic relationships. Second, I investigated the impact of deceptive communication on relational commitment and relationship satisfaction. Two hundred twenty-two college-aged students completed self-report measures assessing the variables of interest. Results demonstrated that men and women deceive their romantic relationship partners at similar rates; however, deception is differentially motivated across the sexes. In addition, results indicated that relational intimacy was negatively associated with the frequency of deceit, although relational intimacy was not significantly associated with specific motives …

My Ai Companion: An Examination Of The Removal Of Erotic Role Play From Replika Through User Discussion On Reddit, Chelsee M. Allen
Department of Sociology: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
The development of artificial intelligence (AI) software has expanded rapidly in recent years, and thus has emerged the importance of exploring human relationships with AI chatbots. Replika, an app which uses AI to mimic human conversation, removed a function called Erotic Role Play (ERP) that allowed for sexual conversation with users’ customizable chatbots in February of 2023. This exploratory qualitative study examines the aftermath of ERP’s removal through an analysis of user interactions on Reddit. Five overarching themes emerged through the analysis of top posts to a Replika-specific subreddit, encompassing topics around mental health, stigma, coping, sex work and gendered …

Summer 2024 OTD Capstone Symposium
This program and policy-type capstone addresses the gap in inclusive services for young adults with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) in post-secondary education (PSE). It resulted in developing and implementing a Social Engagement program designed to enhance communication skills, self-advocacy, and workplace preparedness—key factors for academic and vocational success. Guided by the Occupational Adaptation Model (OAM) and the Person-Environment-Occupation-Performance (PEOP) model, the program used a board game-based format to facilitate interactive learning and the practical application of social skills. Targeting young adults with ASD involved in vocational training, the program emphasized developing professional communication and workplace social interaction. The findings indicate …
The Impact Of A 4-Domain Wellness-Initiative Curriculum On Internal Medicine Resident Physicians, 2024 Mount Sinai Medical Center
The Impact Of A 4-Domain Wellness-Initiative Curriculum On Internal Medicine Resident Physicians, Esha Vallabhaneni, Luigi Cubeddu, Ryan Petit, Fernando Poli, Premal Patel, Cynthia Rivera
HCA Healthcare Journal of Medicine
Background
There is a trend toward fostering well-being, or the state of being happy and healthy, within the medical community. Historically, resident physicians have faced high rates of distress during training. A structured well-being curriculum in residency programs may shift residents' mindsets from survival and resilience to one centered on purpose, engagement, and joy.
Methods
An original well-being curriculum was administered to residents in person at a single institution every 5 weeks for approximately 10 well-being workshops, totaling around 20 hours of curriculum exposure during every academic year. The well-being curriculum was divided into 4 domains: cognitive distortions and problematic …
Autonomy Versus Independence: Implications For Resident And Faculty Engagement, Performance, And Well-Being, 2024 University of Calgary, Cumming School of Medicine
Autonomy Versus Independence: Implications For Resident And Faculty Engagement, Performance, And Well-Being, Adam P. Neufeld, C. Scott Rigby
HCA Healthcare Journal of Medicine
Research shows that when educational leaders support their learners’ autonomy, it positively impacts both parties. This is particularly important in graduate medical education (GME), given that there is a strong emphasis on resident performance, evaluation, and development. Unfortunately, GME faculty often misunderstand autonomy as the resident’s desire for independence or “freedom,” when in fact it refers to the core psychological need to feel volitional and agentic. The distinction is important because volition is not synonymous with independence, and providing freedom can be at odds with strategies that provide true autonomy support. This, in turn, can contribute to the stress, maladjustment, …
Training In Trauma-Responsive And Anti-Racist Telehealth: A Model For Behavioral Health Clinicians And Providers, 2024 Pepperdine University
Training In Trauma-Responsive And Anti-Racist Telehealth: A Model For Behavioral Health Clinicians And Providers, Ritchie Rubio

Telehealth's uptake in behavioral health services has been accelerated by the COVID-19 pandemic. However, many clinicians continue to lack focused training in providing trauma-informed and culturally-responsive telehealth care. This article outlines a model curriculum that was created to instruct and coach behavioral health providers in California on how to integrate anti-racist and trauma-responsive techniques into telehealth. Topics like evidence-based trauma therapies, racial/ ethnic trauma, marginalized communities, digital divide, and provider selfcare were all covered in the nine-part curriculum. Every three-hour session included evidence-informed didactic content, telehealth skills practice, and concrete planning for implementation. Trauma-responsive frameworks such as the tri-phasic model …
What’S In A Name And/Or A Frame? Ontological Framing And Naming Of Social Actors And Social Responses, 2024 North Dakota State University
What’S In A Name And/Or A Frame? Ontological Framing And Naming Of Social Actors And Social Responses, David Westerman, Michael Vosburg, Xinyue Liu, Patric R. Spence
Human-Machine Communication
Artificial intelligence (AI) is fundamentally a communication field. Thus, the study of how AI interacts with us is likely to be heavily driven by communication. The current study examined two things that may impact people’s perceptions of socialness of a social actor: one nonverbal (ontological frame) and one verbal (providing a name) with a 2 (human vs. robot) x 2 (named or not) experiment. Participants saw one of four videos of a study “host” crossing these conditions and responded to various perceptual measures about the socialness and task ability of that host. Overall, data were consistent with hypotheses that whether …

According to pre-post test reports, average knowledge of how to support children across the divorce transition increased. Participants also increased in their intention to avoid engaging in behaviors that are distressing for children. Overall, this study provides evidence for the efficacy of online divorce education and provides support for the advancement of online programming as a promising avenue for Extension more …
A Call To Examine Queer Instructors’ Identity Disclosures In The Classroom, 2024 Ball State University
A Call To Examine Queer Instructors’ Identity Disclosures In The Classroom, Mac Clark
Feminist Pedagogy
Despite the academy and students’ attitudes progressing towards queer instructors (Boren & McPherson, 2018), there is limited scholarship regarding the disclosure of queer identities in the classroom. In ignoring issues of queer disclosure, the communication discipline fails to challenge heteronormative assumptions of instructor identity. My Critical Commentary asks feminist scholars to go beyond traditional conceptions of instructor identities to combat this marginalization. I assert researchers should prioritize deconstructing heteronormativity, apply queer theory, and revisit notions of the classroom closet in their scholarship. By doing so, I argue communication scholars will equip institutions to better support queer faculty and students alike.
Using “Slow” To Reframe Failure: Fusing Wisdom From The Slow Movement With Self-Compassion Principles To Transform Communication Failures, 2024 Bethel College (KS/US)
Using “Slow” To Reframe Failure: Fusing Wisdom From The Slow Movement With Self-Compassion Principles To Transform Communication Failures, Christine E. Crouse-Dick
Feminist Pedagogy
This pedagogical approach invites students to critically examine conventional conceptions of failure. Informed by principles of the Slow Movement and self-compassion, this teaching activity prompts recurring reflection on who has power to define failure and how our responses to perceived failures shape our identities, relationships, and trajectories. Through reflective writing, speaking, and listening exercises, students are encouraged to reframe evaluations of communication failures with a lens that prioritizes contemplation, holistic context, self-companionship, and openness. By challenging masculinized notions of failure that lack self-compassion, this approach cultivates a growth mindset and helps students find more equitable, collectively compassionate interpretations of perceived …
Framing The Fight: Revolutionary Feelings In Virtual Communities, 2024 The Graduate Center, City University of New York
Framing The Fight: Revolutionary Feelings In Virtual Communities, James Reilly
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
This study considers how social media impacts emotional processing, and ultimately social movement development. Through a multidisciplinary lens, I explore how social media fits within larger media ecologies, particularly during times of social upheaval and collective action. Grounded in an examination of organizational efforts in advance of the 2011 Egyptian revolution, I look at how communication patterns create common emotional cues that help form the movement. Considering framing, emotional habitus, and subjective agency within digital spaces, I demonstrate how social media has emerged as an articulating space for social movements to develop and plan before drawing wider, offline populations to …
