On Sport and Society

The world of intercollegiate athletics, particularly the world of elite football and basketball programs, is a world unto itself. It has a connection to reality analogous to that of Disney World, and is shrouded in a veil of secrecy rivaling that of the CIA. Those who run these programs live in a paranoid environment that sustains a bunker mentality, while at the same time is invested with a sense that the rules, of any world beyond their offices, do not apply to them. They are vigilant in maintaining their splendid isolation in a vacuum of privilege.

About two weeks ago the President of THE Ohio State University, Gordon Gee decided to stage a public apology for his comments several weeks earlier in which he used the Little Sisters of the Poor as a punch line for criticism of scheduling by lesser football teams than his group of tainted national champions.

Spectator Attendance Motives In The Japanese Basketball League, Goichi Hagiwara

Student Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to identify the fifferent market segments spectators of the Japanese Basketball League as (JBL) well as understand the attendance motivation factors of its fans. The questionnaire in this study was adopted from the Sport Consumer Motivation Scale (SCMS) developed by James and Ross (2004), additionally, it included demographic information. The results indicated that the most significant motivation of attending JBLgames was player's skill. On the other hand, social interaction and food and beverage indicated least importance motivation imortance. In addition, there were significant mean differences of motivation in age and gender. Researchers have shown that coaches experience burnout due to role conflict, role ambiguity, and work-family conflicts (Kelley & Baghurst, 2009). The demands of being a coach are many. When a coach has a spouse and children, a work-family conflict can develop. Work-family conflict in coaching is created when the coach cannot effectively balance the time and attention demands for both the job and home. Naturally, consequences arise as a result of this conflict. This was something far more significant.

Do you believe in miracles? Since it was first used by Al Michaels on the ABC telecast during the final seconds of the U.S.–Soviet Hockey game at the 1980 Olympics, this line has been quoted countless times by American sports fans. Watching the totally unexpected play or the remarkable outcome to some game, fans have often turned to this phrase to express their wonder.
