Impact Or Impasse: How To Measure University Student Effect On Community Organizations, Joel McReynolds 2019 Illinois State University

Impact Or Impasse: How To Measure University Student Effect On Community Organizations, Joel Mcreynolds

University Research Symposium Posters and Abstracts

This applied research project examines the impact that student engagement has on the goals of a university’s community partners. A pilot study conducted in 2019 draws upon questionnaire and interview data gathered from administrators of seven community organizations that are longtime partners with Illinois State University. Key findings that emerge from descriptive statistics and thematic analysis of the data suggest that the positive impact students have on community organizations far outweighs any challenges the organizations may experience. The project concludes with recommendations on how to enhance the research tool for future evaluations and how to further improve the beneficial impacts …

Navigating Cultures And Development: An Account Of A Female Peace Corps Volunteer In Morocco, Renee Palecek 2019 Illinois State University

Navigating Cultures And Development: An Account Of A Female Peace Corps Volunteer In Morocco, Renee Palecek

Student Research – Stevenson Center

Little is known of how the “doers” of development may navigate regarding her community’s culture and her job in international development. This lack of knowledge leads to the erasure of experiences, felt both by the volunteer herself, as well as the community members she works with. Through autoethnographic methodology, and analysis, I retell my experiences and entanglements as a Peace Corps volunteer in Morocco with Moroccan institutions and culture, with my own identities and prior American socialization. I examine three questions: (1) How does the female PCV in Morocco make sense out of and create value from life events, relationships, …

Load Flow Analysis Of 138/69kv Substation Using Electrical Transient & Analysis Program (Etap), Vanessa Abadia Gomez 2019 University of Arkansas, Fayetteville

Load Flow Analysis Of 138/69kv Substation Using Electrical Transient & Analysis Program (Etap), Vanessa Abadia Gomez

Electrical Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses

This paper examines the load flow analysis of a high-voltage substation using ETAP, and explores options for improving the voltage profile of the system. This study yields critical information about the system, such as the voltage drop at each feeder, the voltage at each bus, as well as real and reactive power losses at the different branches and feeders. In this power flow examination, the system’s performance is evaluated for different operating conditions, so that control measurements can be applied if necessary. The experimental results are used for proposing a plan of using fixed and switched shunt capacitor banks to …

Mammal Species Inventory Using Various Trapping Methods In Zone 4 Of Billy Barquedier National Park, Belize During Rainy Season, Mersady Redding 2019 University of Arkansas, Fayetteville

Mammal Species Inventory Using Various Trapping Methods In Zone 4 Of Billy Barquedier National Park, Belize During Rainy Season, Mersady Redding

Animal Science Undergraduate Honors Theses

Belize is a small country, but it is extremely ecologically diverse. Based on the few studies conducted in Belize, the abundance of mammals is low but diversity is high. Particular findings note the number and identity of species differed between four sites in the Maya Mountains of Belize, indicating that a data set from a single site is not representative of the Neotropical region. Insufficient data is available to estimate current species richness of many areas in Belize, including Billy Barquedier National Park (BBNP). The objective of this study was to explore trapping and documentation methods of terrestrial mammals in …

Salud A La Salud Mental (A Toast To Mental Health), Arturo Rodriguez 2019 California State University, Monterey Bay

Salud A La Salud Mental (A Toast To Mental Health), Arturo Rodriguez

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

Joven Noble is a youth-development and leadership enhancement curriculum within Sequoia High School in Watsonville, Ca. that recognizes adolescents need for guidance during their physical, emotional and spiritual development into adulthood by engaging them in conversations regarding topics such as teen pregnancy and substance abuse. One of the deficits of the program is the lack of discussion centered around mental health. Youth are more likely to experience mental health challenges during their adolescence that can impair their long term development. In Santa Cruz County, 5 per 1,000 children ages 5-19 were hospitalized for mental health crisis treatment in 2016; rates …

Observations And Experiences With District Court: A Community Engagement Project For Criminology, Donna Calia, Koto Hamaguchi, Richard Shin, Derek Bastnick 2019 Bucknell University

Observations And Experiences With District Court: A Community Engagement Project For Criminology, Donna Calia, Koto Hamaguchi, Richard Shin, Derek Bastnick

The International Undergraduate Journal For Service-Learning, Leadership, and Social Change

Our service-learning project involved visiting and observing court proceedings in the Magisterial District Court for Union County Pennsylvania. We worked under Judge Leo Armbruster, sitting in on his preliminary court hearings and learning from the District Attorney. Overall, through this experience we were not only able to examine the specific justice system of Union County, but also gain insight on court proceedings that apply in every case nationwide. This made our experiences more applicable to the field of criminology as a whole, as the information and experiences we have amassed over the semester can be easily transferred to other district …

The Benefits Of Music Education In Urban Education, Emily E. Mattulke 2019 State University of New York at Buffalo

The Benefits Of Music Education In Urban Education, Emily E. Mattulke

The International Undergraduate Journal For Service-Learning, Leadership, and Social Change

In an attempt to show the benefits of music education in urban education, a student observer’s own accounts are analyzed alongside empirical data. The studies of Adrian Hille, Jürgen Schupp, and Peter Miksza are paired with her own anecdotes to create a full picture of music’s effect on a child’s education, especially those from lower income environments. Conclusively, it is found that urban education thrives in the presence of music education, and that the slow stripping away of music programs in American education is detrimental to these benefits, especially for those in impoverished areas where the benefits can be extremely …

County Probation: A Service-Learning And Community Engagement Project For Criminology, Abby Byrnes, Chelsea Scuderi, Lindsay Smalec, Vince Filippini, Sarah Mooney 2019 Bucknell University

County Probation: A Service-Learning And Community Engagement Project For Criminology, Abby Byrnes, Chelsea Scuderi, Lindsay Smalec, Vince Filippini, Sarah Mooney

The International Undergraduate Journal For Service-Learning, Leadership, and Social Change

Our group focused on understanding the role of the probation office in the criminal justice system and in society. We were fortunate enough to work with the Union County Probation Office where we focused on adult probation, juvenile probation, and treatment court. We focused specifically on how it works, the effects of probation on society, and the differences between juvenile and adult probation. Much of what we learned through our participation at the Union County Probation Office relates to topics we covered in class discussions, debates, and in the textbook readings, making this a very worthwhile experience for our learning. …

Service Learning In Developing Communities: Conducting Research In Mozambique And Belize, Mersady Redding, Kelsey Johnson 2019 University of Arkansas

Service Learning In Developing Communities: Conducting Research In Mozambique And Belize, Mersady Redding, Kelsey Johnson

The International Undergraduate Journal For Service-Learning, Leadership, and Social Change

In 2017, Johnson and Redding spent eight weeks in Dangriga, Belize to conduct their undergraduate honors research. Johnson and Redding set out to determine the mammal species in Billy Barquedier National Park,in the Stann Creek district of Belize, but the canopy objective was to supply the park with information to apply for grants, advertise the unique tropical species, and increase a sustainable profit (Billy Barquedier). The eight-week service-learning program was a pilot program for the University of Arkansas (University of Arkansas: Special Projects with Peacework in Belize). It was the first-time students were sent to Belize to conduct undergraduate research …
