We use adaptive cycle theory to improve the understanding of cycles of urban change in the city of Barcelona, Spain, from 1953 to 2016. More specifically, we explore the vulnerabilities and windows of opportunity these cycles of change introduced in the release (Ω) and reorganization (α) phases. In the two recurring cycles of urban change analyzed (before and after 1979), we observe two complementary loops. During the front loop, financial and natural resources are efficiently exploited by homogenous dominant groups (private developers, the bourgeoisie, politicians, technocrats) with the objective of promoting capital accumulation based on private (or private-public partnership) investments. …

Schools Uniting Neighborhoods (SUN), a collaborative initiative in Multnomah County, Oregon, combines the increasingly popular community school model with an innovative organizational structure to further two key goals: sustainability as an initiative and furthering racial equity. This thesis situates SUN within the context of American public education reform and existing literature on the positive outcomes, organizational structures, and leadership components of community schools. Building on past reviews of SUN and its outcomes, I use results from qualitative interviews with key stakeholders to provide insight into how its organizational structure contributes to the goals of sustainability and racial equity. Assessing The Feasibility And Acceptability Of Community Health Extension Workers To Treat Hypertension Associated With Pregnancy: An Analysis Of Post-Intervention Findings, Salisu Mohammed Ishaku

This brief reports on a study that tested the feasibility of tasking community health extension workers (CHEWs) with detecting and managing hypertension, and prescribing an oral antihypertensive drug at primary health care (PHC) facilities in Nigeria as part of a package of care for women with pre-eclampsia and eclampsia (PE/E). This evaluation measured improvements in knowledge retention and increases in early detection, prevention, and management of PE/E. Findings indicate that trained CHEWs working at intervention PHCs can correctly identify, differentiate, and manage normal, mild, moderate, and severe hypertension. These findings are important contributions to implementing Nigeria’s national task-shifting policy at …

The study underpins the Aga Khan Foundation’s implementation of “Project Mesha,” a community-based program to develop the potential of goat farming among women goat rearers in four blocks of Muzaffarpur district. The aim of the project is to increase the income and empowerment of women goat rearers through the implementation of Project Mesha in JEEViKA-run self-help groups. Electricity generated through residential solar provides a low carbon source of electricity. However, diffusion of residential solar remains low across the United States. Growing this diffusion takes an understanding of localized uptake trends, which can focus policy and business efforts to help increase residential solar market penetration. This is the first research to investigate residential solar uptake in Washington State and to examine environmental education as a potential driver of residential solar uptake. Water scarcity is a highly contested concept. The dominant narratives of water scarcity in policy debates have been criticised for prioritising purely quantitative metrics and eliding questions of inequality and power. While much scholarship on water scarcity examines contexts in the global South where potable water infrastructures do not reach most residents, this article examines conflict over commercial water extraction in a Northern setting where access to potable tap water is nearly universal, yet local water supplies are increasingly constrained. The increase in the number of jobs that require a STEM-minded workforce raises the demand for education systems and communities to focus on fostering the development of STEM competencies of students. American youth are not gaining the skills necessary to compete in the global workforce. This study investigates how Kentucky 4-H minimizes the barriers of accessing STEM programs for youth in grades 4-8. This dissertation project seeks to address the sociological processes, dynamics, and mechanisms inflecting how and why U.S. society reproduces a sexually dimorphic, binary gender structure. The project builds upon the work of sociologists of gender on the doing gender framework, intersectional feminist approaches to identity formation, and hegemonic masculinity and relational theories of gender. In a 2012 article in Social Science and Medicine presenting contemporary concepts in gender theory to the health-oriented readers of the journal, R. W.
