Nothing is more important in the work lives of employees of human service organizations than job satisfaction. Job satisfaction is fundamental to employee welfare, organizational sustainability, and welfare services. The study aims to provide an overview of the influence of work life balance and burnout on the level of job satisfaction of employees of humanitarian service organizations. The study results using the Somers’D test partially proved the hypothesis that there is a positive and significant influence of work life balance on job satisfaction of 0.571 and a p-value of 0.000, stating that employees with high work life balance tend to …

Meeting The Challenge Of Covid-19: Innovation And Adaptation In Services For Expectant And Parenting Youth In Baltimore, Margo Candelaria, Corey Shdaimah, Jenny Afkinich, Yan (Stella) Zhu

Journal of Human Services: Training, Research, and Practice

To explore perspectives on COVID-19’s impact on access to services for expectant and parenting youth (EPY), qualitative interviews were conducted with seven service providers and two parents. Open coding resulted in three overarching themes. 1. Creativity and adaptation: pride regarding ability to devise necessary modifications. 2. New and ongoing networks: inter-agency collaboration, provider-parent relationships, and parent networks offered material and social support. 3. Communication: varied strategies helped maintain and initiate EPY engagement. In under-resourced environments where providers and EPY must be creative due to scarcity, COVID-19 required that respondents draw on existing networks and strategies to cope with new challenges.

The Role Of Effective Interprofessional Collaboration In Social Worker Burnout In A Northeastern Veterans Affairs Medical Center: Implications For Social Work Education, Michael L. Clarkson-Hendrix

This preliminary study explored effective interprofessional collaboration’s role on social worker burnout within a single Veterans Affairs medical center. Twenty-one social workers completed a survey to collect data on burnout, effective interprofessional collaboration components, and demographic characteristics. On average, social workers reported moderately low burnout levels. As collective ownership of goals increased, burnout decreased. Similarly, as reflection on interprofessional team processes increased, burnout decreased. Future research would benefit from a large, randomly-sampled group of social work participants across multiple sectors to develop implications for social work education. However, effects from specific types and combinations of maltreatments are unclear. Climate change poses significant challenges to vulnerable coastal communities in Indonesia. As a welfare state, the Indonesian government is expected to safeguard these vulnerable groups through policies that promote their welfare and sustainable livelihoods. However, current policies create a paradox. This article explores this paradox: on the one hand, Indonesia adheres to the welfare state principle, which demands that all government actions be grounded in law, ensuring public safety and welfare. On the other hand, the policies focus on exploiting natural resources, exacerbating the vulnerabilities of coastal communities, particularly in the face of climate change. The COVID-19 pandemic changed people’s lives and resulted in tremendous pain, loss and suffering. The Rio Grande Valley (RGV), in the state of Texas in the U.S., was one of the regions with the highest number of infections and deaths during the pandemic. However, individuals’ bereavement in the RGV is rarely addressed. In this qualitative study, a snowball sample of 47 individuals who had lost their loved ones during the years 2020–2021 were interviewed and invited to engage in an art activity. Late Life Cognitive Function Trajectory Among The Chinese Oldest-Old Population-A Machine Learning Approach, Jierong Hu, Minzhi Ye, Juan Xi

Informed by the biopsychosocial framework, our study uses the Chinese Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Survey (CLHLS) dataset to examine cognitive function trajectories among the oldest-old (80+). Employing K-means clustering, we identified two latent groups: High Stability (HS) and Low Stability (LS). The HS group maintained satisfactory cognitive function, while the LS group exhibited consistently low function. Lasso regression revealed predictive factors, including socioeconomic status, biological conditions, mental health, lifestyle, psychological, and behavioral factors. This data-driven approach sheds light on cognitive aging patterns and informs policies for healthy aging. Our study pioneers non-parametric machine learning methods in this context.

The need for behavioral health integration (BHI) in primary care continues to grow to address the behavioral health needs of patients and families. The Effects Of Childhood Maltreatment In A Sample Of Deaf Adults, Teresa Crowe Ph.D

This research studied the impacts of child maltreatment on 87 deaf adults' use of substances, anxiety and depression, involvement in victimization and perpetration of intimate partner violence, age, gender identity, and parental language use. After IRB approval, participants completed an online survey about experiences of childhood maltreatment and its effects on their lives. Results showed that the sample: a) had low to moderate incidence of childhood physical abuse, sexual abuse, physical neglect, and emotional neglect, b) reported mild levels of anxiety and depression, c) included 32.5% who met the threshold for IPV victimization and/or perpetration, d) relatively low levels of …

Deaf Mental Health Care (DMHC) is a specialty involving clinical expertise and self-awareness in therapeutic work with D/deaf people.1 Within the DMHC framework, this case report describes the psychotherapy of one Deaf individual, whose developmental experiences are common among D/deaf people. It illustrates how clinical models developed with hearing people informed the clinical team working with this Deaf individual. The treatment integrated focused skill-building with reparative emotional and linguistic “attunement.” In addition, the case illustrates how clinicians and their clients can use the intersections of their different languages and cultures as growth opportunities.

A growing number of college students are nontraditional learners (age 21–65) who are people of color. These students face unique challenges in a higher education system increasingly shaped by neoliberalism and the ongoing context of institutionalized racism. In Oregon, policymakers have established ambitious goals to address racial disparities in educational attainment. In this study, focus groups and interviews were conducted with 111 Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) adult learners in Oregon to better understand their perspectives and experiences in regard to educational and career pathways.
