This project involved the delivery of hyflex content to a group of part-time work based social care students. All students are currently employed in management roles within the social care sector and are located nationwide. Students attend a 1 year part-time add on level 8 degree in leadership & management in social care. In previous iterations of the programme, students have attended 1 evening per week during the academic semester plus eight Saturdays over the course of the year. Senior nutrition programs meet the essential needs of adults aged 60 and over, especially those who are low-income, live in rural areas, have limited English proficiency and are at risk of requiring higher levels of care without these services. In many greater Minnesota counties, over 25% of the population is aged 65 or older. Rural communities are aging more rapidly and face higher rates of food insecurity compared to urban and suburban areas.

Chronic school absenteeism has long been a persistent issue, but the COVID-19 pandemic has exacerbated this challenge. Chronic absenteeism leads to poor academic outcomes and lower graduation rates, which limit future opportunities and potential. While many school districts have traditionally responded through child protection services (CPS) or juvenile court proceedings, these punitive strategies do not address the root causes of absenteeism or reduce barriers to school attendance. CPS resources are stretched thin, focused on more urgent child welfare issues, and should not be diverted to issues that can be better addressed through supportive, preventative strategies. Each year, roughly 600,000 individuals are released from state and federal prisons; 6,960 in Minnesota alone. After incarceration, employment is vital to successful reentry for justice-impacted individuals, yet many depart without the necessary education and skills. Consistent post-release employment is associated with decreased recidivism rates, regardless of the individual’s criminal record. This population deserves support in preparing for employment upon reentry.

Kinship caregivers are falling through the cracks, lacking ongoing support and safety services for children and their caregivers. Kinship diversion caregivers and their children do not receive services and support that licensed foster caregivers might receive such as financial assistance, reunification efforts, and safety monitoring. Shame is a self-conscious emotion that has been referred to as both a master and a hidden emotion. Sociological and psychological researchers have neglected shame, although it has seen a resurgence in the past 20 years as a topic for research. Shame heightens during adolescence, a transitional period that bridges childhood and adulthood and involves psychological, social, physiological, and neurobiological changes. Adolescent substance use leads to academic, health and mental health, peer, and family difficulties. This study examined the role of affordable housing in promoting economic stability among low- and moderate-income households in Connecticut. Focusing on income security, employment opportunities, and housing retention, this research highlighted the significance of affordable housing as a means to alleviate financial strain, support job retention, and foster community resilience. Utilizing a phenomenological approach, the study gathered insights from tenants, policymakers, and developers through conducting interviews and a focus group. School social workers (SSWers) support students facing adversity by advocating for their social-emotional well-being while navigating academic mandates. SSWers address behavioral and emotional challenges that impede student success, often rooted in trauma, mental health, disabilities, or challenging circumstances. However, less is known about the array of approaches SSWers utilize when working with students. As such, this study aimed to understand the current approaches and trends of SSWers in Illinois when working with youth who face adversity. Black women in the United States experience disproportionately adverse maternal health outcomes, particularly in the Southeast. This dissertation examines the maternal health care experiences and resilience strategies of Black mothers in South Carolina through a qualitative study grounded in critical race theory, Black feminist thought, resilience theory, and ecological systems theory. It highlights the pervasive influence of structural racism while amplifying the resourcefulness and agency of Black mothers. The first manuscript develops a conceptual framework to explore the structural, social, and interpersonal mechanisms influencing Black maternal health care experiences. The UAB Social Work Partnership (SWP), in collaboration with Dr. Donny Gerke and MSW students Kafui Sakyi-Addo, Eryka Slaughter, Matthew Miller, and Shalini Chatterji, conducted a needs assessment survey in October 2024 to better understand the challenges and priorities of social workers within UAB. The assessment addressed salary equity, continuing education (CEU) needs, networking opportunities, and internship supervision support. This report summarizes the key findings from the 106 survey responses from UAB social workers, offering insights that can inform policy development, professional support strategies, and organizational improvements within the UAB social work community.
