Studies show that within most countries, there are generally many different socio-cultural, ethnic and religious groups and this diversity inevitably creates a level of inter-group tension, with income disparities, cultural differences, and intergroup segregation leading in turn to social exclusion. This paper sets out to develop a conceptual framework to examine the relationship between that participation and the social inclusion outcomes in the plan-making process. It addresses how social inclusion can relate to the plan-making process culturally, politically and institutionally, economically and socially with high level participation. An Exploration Of Ethically Challenging Situations Experienced By School Psychologists And Related Outcomes Associated With Those Experiences-A Mixed Methods Study, Janice Pietrowicz

This mixed-methods study followed an exploratory sequential methodology to study pressures placed upon school psychologists to engage in unethical practices and the outcomes associated with those experiences. The participants, 27 school psychologists from Pennsylvania, completed a questionnaire focused on the pressure to engage in unethical practices and related outcomes. Ten of those participants were selected for an interview that focused on administrative pressure related to the Social Justice Theory. Findings show that pressure to engage in unethical practice continues to be a problem in the field of school psychology and that school psychologists experience repercussions as a result of advocating …

In this thesis, I address the systemic issue of sexual violence and rape culture that affect students on college campuses at an alarming rate. By utilizing critical action research, I propose the creation of the Department of Survivor Outreach and Response (SOAR), a holistic and collaborative department that focuses on supporting and advocating for survivors of sexual violence while also conducting prevention and education initiatives. I emphasize the importance of Kimberlé Crenshaw’s concept of intersectionality (1993), encourage the use of the Social Change Model of Leadership (Astin & Astin, 1996), and empathy within leadership. Archival collections hold tangible documentation of the range of human experience. Diaries, letters, photographs, audio recordings, reports, and other paper and film-based materials tell the stories of people’s lives. Using examples from the vast parapsychology archives and rare book collections at the University of West Georgia, this paper will share people’s first-hand accounts of extraordinary incidents or of their supernatural abilities, from the profound to the disappointing, and from the unexpected to the purposefully sought, including near-death experiences, extrasensory perception, and psychedelic drug use.

Abstract Tele-mental health, or the provision of remote counseling services, has been available for decades. This qualitative study uses the framework of affordances, derived from Gibson, to examine what social work practitioners working on direct to consumer tele-mental health (DTCTMH) platforms are discovering about the features, benefits, and constraints of virtual therapy. An interpretive phenomenological approach was employed to document the lived experiences of social workers who practice in this manner. According to the practitioners interviewed, for a subset of individuals seeking treatment, DTCTMH can offer meaningful interpersonal interaction that confers benefit. The burden of child care in the wake of widespread K-12 school closures has disproportionately harmed women, communities of color, and lower income families -- a clear indicator that now is the time to adopt a federally-subsidized childcare system in local communities that goes beyond public schools. Current proposals must address regulatory and financial challenges to child care centers and home-based providers, allow for local government involvement and discretion, and maintain flexibility for parents with non-traditional work schedules.

This autobiographical inquiry will explore my own experiences with physical abuse, sexual abuse, and neglect. Using the method of currere as a lead theory. The four-step process – regressive, progressive, analytical, synthetic – helped me work towards understanding the parts of myself affected by these traumas. Investigation of my own family’s generations of abuse as well as reflecting on these experiences helped me deconstruct my own story as I search for my own meaning and purpose. What is the likely effect of the recession brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic on indigent defense budgets in the United States? To look forward, we look backward. We examine data on county-level spending on indigent defense in Texas during the Great Recession of 2007–2009. Redistributive policies—those which use taxpayer funds to support individuals who themselves pay little or no tax—are particularly susceptible to cuts during times of fiscal stress. Yet our analysis shows indigent defense policy, measured in terms of spending and access to counsel rates, was generally stable through the Great Recession years, even in counties hit hardest. …

Since 2009, the city of Arcata, R. H. Emmerson & Sons, and Humboldt State University have collaborated on the transfer of an 884-acre tract of land in Goukdi’n (known locally as Jacoby Creek Forest). The main goals of this project are to prevent fragmentation of the land, protect wildlife, and to support and enhance student research opportunities. In the ten years that it took for this land to be transferred to the California State University and in the care of Humboldt State University the Wiyot Tribe was not consulted regarding the parcels, their purchase, or their being given to HSU. …

A Fat Imposter: The Embodied Intersection Between Race, Body Type And Fatness In Margaret Cho’S Comedy, Julia Cox

Margaret Cho is a comedic goddess who, in her mockery, serves flaming hot social commentary about race, body image, and fatness. Within this thesis, I used critical discourse analysis to understand how Margaret Cho embodies Asianness, whiteness, and the body types and images prescribed respectively. While working on data analysis, I came across a common media trope of fat women: the use of indexically Southern (United States), Appalachian, and Working class indexicals in speech and lexical items. I connected the ideologies surrounding Southern and Appalachian language to the inequalities that fat women face. This voicing had not previously been written …

This thesis concerns the injustices present in industrial animal agriculture in the United States, domestic violence, and their disproportionate impact on marginalized communities. Despite the work of social movements centered around domestic violence and the slaughterhouse, the state of both continues to worsen, particularly for communities of color. My research seeks to uncover what factors preclude the efficacy of these movements. A qualitative analysis of the labor advocacy and animal rights movements in the slaughterhouse and the domestic violence advocacy movement suggests that the current disparate framings of these injustices and a lack of attention to race contribute to the …

Homelessness Research & Action Collaborative Publications and Presentations

These are the preliminary results of an ongoing project.

Stories from the Outside centers the voices of people experiencing homelessness during the 2020 Oregon wildfire season. PSU’s Homelessness Research & Action Collaborative, in partnership with the Street Roots Ambassadors program, surveyed 73 people in the Portland area in June 2021. Ambassadors sought out Black, Indigenous, and Other People of Color to ensure their voices were represented as BIPOC residents are disproportionately impacted by homelessness.

Many respondents felt disconnected and left out of emergency relief efforts. These are their stories.

การวิจัยนี้มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อศึกษากระบวนการทำงานของศูนย์แคร์ กรมราชทัณฑ์ วิเคราะห์สภาพปัญหาและอุปสรรคที่เกี่ยวข้องกับการดำเนินการ และแนวทางการพัฒนาการดำเนินการของศูนย์แคร์ กรมราชทัณฑ์ การศึกษาใช้วิธีการวิจัยเชิงคุณภาพผ่านการสัมภาษณ์เชิงลึกผู้มีส่วนเกี่ยวข้องกับศูนย์แคร์ ซึ่งประกอบด้วย ผู้อำนวยการกองพฤตินิสัย ผู้ปฏิบัติงานศูนย์แคร์ในเรือนจำ 4 แห่ง คือ ทัณฑสถานหญิงพิษณุโลก เรือนจำกลางคลองเปรม เรือนจำกลางนครสวรรค์ และเรือนจำพิเศษกรุงเทพมหานคร จำนวน 16 คน หน่วยงานเครือข่ายที่ปฏิบัติงานร่วมกับศูนย์แคร์ จำนวน 7 คน และผู้พ้นโทษที่ได้รับความช่วยเหลือจากศูนย์แคร์ จำนวน 5 คน ผลการศึกษาพบว่า 1) กระบวนการทำงานของศูนย์แคร์ กรมราชทัณฑ์ แบ่งออกเป็น 3 ขั้นตอน คือ กระบวนการก่อนปล่อยตัว กระบวนการในวันปล่อยตัว และกระบวนการภายหลังปล่อยตัว 2) ปัญหาและอุปสรรคสำคัญที่เกี่ยวข้องกับการดำเนินการของศูนย์แคร์ ได้แก่ ปัญหาด้านบุคลากร ปัญหาด้านการให้ข้อมูลของผู้ต้องขัง ปัญหาด้านสังคม และปัญหาด้านข้อกฎหมาย และ 3) แนวทางการพัฒนาการดำเนินการของศูนย์แคร์ คือ การเพิ่มบุคลากรในตำแหน่งนักสังคมสงเคราะห์ในเรือนจำ/ทัณฑสถานที่ยังขาดแคลน การให้ผู้พ้นโทษที่ได้รับความช่วยเหลือจากศูนย์แคร์เข้ามาบรรยายถึงประโยชน์ที่จะได้รับในการให้ข้อมูลที่ถูกต้อง การจัดทำสื่อหรือกิจกรรมเพื่อเผยแพร่ตัวอย่างของผู้พ้นโทษที่สามารถกลับตัวได้ เพื่อให้สังคมเปลี่ยนทัศนคติ และการแก้ข้อกฎหมายเพื่อให้ผู้พ้นโทษได้มีโอกาสประกอบกิจการของตัวเองหรือได้รับการจ้างงานมากขึ้น

Historically, Black defendants have faced more severe sentences compared to White defendants. Research investigating this phenomenon in the paradigm of the insanity defense, found that Black defendants were acquitted as “not guilty by reason of insanity” (NGRI) significantly more often than White defendants (Poulson, 1990). In the current study, we investigate the influence of race of defendant and race of victim on judgments of NGRI in a 3 (race of victim: Black v. White v. Hispanic) x 3 (race of defendant: Black v. White v. Hispanic) between-subjects design. Our results indicated that a Hispanic defendant was acquitted NGRI more frequently …
