The Role Of Chief Diversity Officers In Institutionalizing Diversity And Inclusion: A Multiple Case Study Of Three Exemplar Universities, Cynthia D. Dávalos Phd
Dissertations
Due to demographic shifts and the changing political and economic landscape, universities are experiencing increased demands to produce a culturally competent and well-trained globally minded workforce. To address these demands in a systematic manner, several universities have created a new senior level administrative position to direct campus diversity and inclusion efforts. This position known universally in academia as the Chief Diversity Officer (CDO) is responsible for institutionalizing diversity and inclusion so that diversity moves from the margins of the university to the center and becomes a standard way of thinking and doing business. Given this high-level executive leadership design, the …

Educating The Whole Child: Evidence Of Health And Wellness Instruction In The Schools Serving Low-Income Students, Andria M. Shook Phd
Dissertations
Educators in the United States are expressing concern about student physical and mental well-being. Childhood obesity has more than doubled in the past three decades, and today, one in five children experiences symptoms of mental illness. Low-income children are especially subject to these conditions. The long-term consequences for the country as a whole are significant. Schools are particularly well placed to address these problems by supporting the well-being of the whole child. Efforts have begun in select schools and districts to incorporate health and wellness instruction into the school day. This study identifies existing health and wellness components that three …

Immigration Restrictions And The Right To Avoid Unwanted Obligations, Javier S. Hidalgo
Jepson School of Leadership Studies articles, book chapters and other publications
In a recent paper, Michael Blake (2013) presents a novel
argument for the claim that, if states have obligations to protect the human
rights of everyone in their jurisdiction, then some immigration restrictions
are morally justified. Blake argues that citizens acquire new obligations
to protect the human rights of immigrants once these immigrants enter
a state’s territorial jurisdiction. But he contends that people have rights to
avoid unwanted obligations and that citizens can permissibly restrict immigration
in order to prevent immigrants from imposing unwanted obligations
on them. In this paper, I will show that Blake’s argument for immigration
restrictions is …

Communication & Leadership Dissertations and Theses
Due to web-based technologies and social media, the nonDrit industry is currently experiencing a change in the way fundraising is accomplished, business is developed, and information is communicated to the public. Some organizations have embraced these changes, while others are hesitating to move in a new direction. While the organizations changing with the industry are making major strides in their business success, those who are not redeveloping are missing out on an opportunity to increase their volunteer base, organization awareness, and financial support. In order to help nonDrit organizations understand the benefits of the evolving technologies, a static, poorly designed …

Meeting Constituent Needs Through E-Governance, Morgan Drdak
Communication & Leadership Dissertations and Theses
Government agencies are adopting e-governance projects at an incredible pace to increase transparency, constituent participation, and collaboration. Although these projects have the potential to improve the relationships between constituents and their governments, there are major barriers to the successful implementation and management of such initiatives, including limited resources, the inherently inflexible nature of bureaucracy, and the involvement of politicians and public managers with minimal understanding of e-governance. To assist government agencies in overcoming these barriers, a project management model and set of best practices have been developed by applying the uses and gratifications communication theory to a synthesis of available …

African Americans' Perceived Social Identities Through Media Projection, Adenike Orekoya
Communication & Leadership Dissertations and Theses
African Americans are commonly defined by artificial characteristics which portray them in restrictive roles. This is a result of media’s influence and the way its messages shape society. As a result, African Americans’ self-identity is shaped by the negative images they see and hear in their environment. Based on the application of Feminist Standpoint Theory in concurrence with Semiotic Theory, this study examines the consequences and effect of bias media messages. Furthermore, it investigates these consequences on African Americans' individual and collective identity due to media depictions. This thesis investigates how public opinion affects African Americans’ perception of themselves. The …

Self-Determination, Immigration Restrictions, And The Problem Of Compatriot Deportation, Javier S. Hidalgo
Jepson School of Leadership Studies articles, book chapters and other publications
Several political theorists argue that states have rights to self-determination and these rights justify immigration restrictions. Call this: the self-determination argument for immigration restrictions. In this article, I develop an objection to the self-determination argument. I argue that if it is morally permissible for states to restrict immigration because they have rights to self-determination, then it can also be morally permissible for states to deport and denationalize their own citizens. We can either accept that it is permissible for states to deport and denationalize their own citizens or reject the self-determination argument. To avoid this implication, we should reject the …

The Collapse Of Sensemaking At The Pennsylvania State University, Travis Schott
Communication & Leadership Dissertations and Theses
The Pennsylvania State University (PSU) has generated billions of dollars from collegiate licensing of products and corporate sponsorship due largely to the success of their football program. Therefore, significant economic consequences exist if the PSU brand sustains damage to its image and reputation. This thesis examines events and communication among key actors at PSU who had knowledge of allegations, or who were directly involved with the investigation of Jerry Sandusky, the former PSU football defensive coordinator, for improper sexual contact with minors dating back as far as 1998. Two reports published following independent investigations of this incident provide detailed accounts …

The (A)ffective and effective manager understands this and incorporates this understanding into how he/she interacts with superiors and subordinates in the work environment on a daily basis. This article offers strategies on how to be an (A)ffective manager.

Services For Parentally Placed Catholic School Students Under The Individuals With Disabilities Education Improvement Act, Julie Cantillon Phd
Dissertations
The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), which Congress enacted in 1975 with subsequent revisions, states that school districts are to provide a free and appropriate public education (FAPE) to all students with disabilities in the least restrictive environment. Public local education agencies (LEAs) including school districts have an obligation to identify, locate, and evaluate private school students suspected of having a disability—the "child find" process. Students enrolled by their parents in private schools are not entitled to a FAPE if they choose for their children to remain in private school after the children have been identified as having a …
