People do not begin their lives with the necessary language skills to assign meaning to words (Piaget, 2009). People assign meaning through experiences and culture to the words that they use (Whorf, 1956). Specifically for the purpose of this project, the meaning assigned to the word no is developed through experiences and interactions with others. This meaning can influence an individual’s ability to experience positive goal obtainment. Leadership is generally thought to flow from the top to the bottom in organizations. In fact, a cursory glance at the popular press shows very clearly that top organizational leaders—the Chief Executive Officer or Managing Director—are often glorified as being the brains behind the success of the entire organization (e.g., Ray Kroc of McDonald’s, Bill Gates of Microsoft) or vilified as the cause of an organization’s downfall (e.g., Kenneth Lay of Enron). A look behind the scenes, however, shows a far more complex situation.

The author reflects on the devastation of New York University (NYU) Health Sciences Library and the NYU Langone Medical Center due to Superstorm Sandy. He mentions that while the library staff were deliberate and systematic in planning for the coming superstorm, it proved to be costly, disruptive and even tragic for some. He believes that institutions and the library profession must push for changes amidst the onslaught of natural disasters.

The purpose of this research paper is to determine whether or not positive employee engagement scores correlate to higher achievement of organizational goals. In order to provide context a literature review was performed to understand the current definition of employee engagement, the relationship between engagement and goals as well as an understanding of how organizational goals impact employee engagement. This paper investigates the strategies used to help small business become profitable. A primary research question following a series of secondary questions were formulated in order to achieve this goal. First, it was considered necessary to understand what consulting business and small business mean from the small business perspective. The second step was to get an insight in the reason why small businesses hire consultants, and the third part of the study focused on the application of the strategic leadership theory. Here the frame of direction was based on Richard L. Hughes and Katherine Colarelli Beatty strategic leadership theory (2005).

Where is the current investment in training for multimedia managers and staff that produce daily broadcast news reports on multimedia platforms? What leadership-training program could be introduced at a local Midwest multimedia station that might address the need for leadership training at this station? This Action Research project examines the literature of what multimedia companies are doing in leadership training and observes specifically one Midwest station in particular. This study analyzes actions taken by hospital leaders throughout the United States to improve the services offered by their institutions. A review of studies by researchers on patient-centered care, doctor and nurse collaboration, and involvement of patients' families in the patients' experience revealed that increased focus on patient-centered care, doctor and nurse collaboration, and involvement of patients' families is necessary for trust to be attained by patients.

This action research project addresses the leadership development challenges of a midsize nonprofit in the Midwestern region of the United States. By looking at the first two phases of the program offered, the state of information on other similar organizations leadership development efforts, the state of information on mentoring options, and the application of Kouzes and Posners [2012J leadership theory of Exemplary Leadership, the project lays out the plan for the third phase of development.

Using a cross-disciplinary approach, this paper provides an important connection between elderspeak and identity subversion. Elderspeak, sometimes referred to as secondary baby talk, is a modified speech pattern marked by increased volume, simplified syntax, diminutives, collective pronouns, and terms of endearment. It subverts identity by negating ltfe experience and the individuality of an elder. Research has found that elderspeak can lead to a diminished sense of self, yet it is a significant part of the speech environment for elders in institutions that are designed to provide care. They are disproportionately affected by obesity and chronic diseases which translate into decreased quality of life, loss of work opportunities and perceptions of injustice for the Hispanic population. In 1994 the state of Michigan changed its school finance system. Over a nine-month period between July, 1993, and March, 1994, state legislators and the voters of Michigan acted to change the tax structure and address funding equity for public schools. In the fall of 1994, Michigan’s public schools began operating under an entirely new set of school finance reforms. The primary focus of this research is the articulation of the effects of the 1994 Michigan school funding reform (Proposal A).
