This thesis examined how women who share membership in a close social group use communication to manage the private information of other members of the group. Carol Gilligan’s work in In A Different Voice introduces a moral development theory that women’s ethics are defined by their need for human connection and caring. Communication Management theory was used as an interpretive lens to examine the decisions and behaviors behind a member’s choice to disclose or not disclose the personal information about another member. This qualitative, phenomenological study explored both the lived experiences of Millennial journalists’ preferred style of intra-organizational communication with stakeholders from other generations, and non-Millennial supervisors’ preferred styles of interpersonal communication in the workplace. The primary theoretical framework for this project was guided by Buber’s philosophy of dialogic ethics and Philipsen’s speech codes theory as both focus on better understanding how interlocutors speak to each other and form unique, lasting relationships. Data collection involved guided face-to-face or phone interviews with 10 Millennial journalists and 10 non-Millennial supervisors. Data analysis followed constant comparison analysis (Glaser & Strauss, 1967). Five themes emerged from …

People assign meaning through experiences and culture to the words that they use (Whorf, 1956). Specifically for the purpose of this project, the meaning assigned to the word no is developed through experiences and interactions with others. This meaning can influence an individual’s ability to experience positive goal obtainment. Leadership is generally thought to flow from the top to the bottom in organizations. In fact, a cursory glance at the popular press shows very clearly that top organizational leaders—the Chief Executive Officer or Managing Director—are often glorified as being the brains behind the success of the entire organization (e.g., Ray Kroc of McDonald’s, Bill Gates of Microsoft) or vilified as the cause of an organization’s downfall (e.g., Kenneth Lay of Enron). A look behind the scenes, however, shows a far more complex situation.

This paper reviews current thinking on organizational leadership generally and academic leadership in particular. In the past quarter-century, views about the essence of leadership have shifted from a hierarchical view that leadership flows from a leadership position to a much more lateral view that leadership roles are available to everyone. Recent research on leadership in higher education largely mirrors the more general leadership literature: significantly more attention is now being paid to collective, context-dependent, and relational approaches. The author reflects on the devastation of New York University (NYU) Health Sciences Library and the NYU Langone Medical Center due to Superstorm Sandy. He mentions that while the library staff were deliberate and systematic in planning for the coming superstorm, it proved to be costly, disruptive and even tragic for some. He believes that institutions and the library profession must push for changes amidst the onslaught of natural disasters.

This narrative, single-case study examines how liaison librarians at the University of Minnesota (UMN) came to include advocating for reform of the scholarly communication system among their core responsibilities. While other libraries may hire a coordinator or rely on a committee to undertake outreach programs, UMN has defined baseline expertise in scholarly communication for all librarians who serve as liaisons to disciplinary faculty members. By “mainstreaming” scholarly communication duties, UMN is declaring these issues central to the profession.1 This intrinsic study uses evidence gathered from open-ended interviews with three participants, supplemented by documentation. Question/Purpose: The New York University (NYU) Health Sciences Library used a new method to arrange in-depth discussions with basic science researchers. The objective was to identify collaborators for a new National Library of Medicine administrative supplement. Setting: The research took place at the NYU Health Sciences Library. Methods: Using the National Institutes of Health (NIH) RePORTER, forty-four researchers were identified and later contacted through individualized emails. Results: Nine researchers responded to the email followed by six in-person or phone discussions. At the conclusion of this process, two researchers submitted applications for supplemental funding, and both of these applications were successful. …
