Disability discrimination is a long-standing issue that, despite protections, continues to result in unemployment, underemployment, and lack of advancement for disabled persons. Visible stigma is researched substantially; however, less is known about the impact of stigma associated with identities that can be concealed. Although researchers have investigated this issue, currently there is no tool to measure this phenomenon. Individuals with intellectual disabilities have higher rates of unemployment compared to other population groups. There is limited knowledge regarding the development of postsecondary education (PSE) programs that provide employment skills training and education to individuals with intellectual disabilities. The purpose of this basic qualitative study was to investigate the development of PSE programs for those with intellectual disabilities. Dewey’s experiential learning theory was the framework for this study. Invitations to participate were sent to directors and faculty of all PSE programs in one northeastern U.S. state. This study was designed to examine the instructional modifications teachers use with students who have been diagnosed with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). It determined teacher perceptions of students with ADHD and the impact those perceptions had on participants’ implementation of instructional modifications designed for students diagnosed with ADHD. This study also considered what effect instructional modifications have on the academic achievement of students diagnosed with ADHD within the context of a traditional high school mathematics classroom. AbstractWhether from natural or human causes, every global community is at risk for overwhelming, destabilizing incidents. Hurricanes Irma and Maria devastated the U.S. Virgin Islands in late August and early September 2017, necessitating the urgent evacuation of hemodialysis patients over 1000 miles to the U.S. mainland. Because the damage and response to the U.S. territory were unprecedented, the public health implications of the government’s strategies on the evacuated population subset were unexplored. Objective

Families with children with developmental disabilities (DDs) experience effects on family functioning and will often turn to physical activity (e.g., dance) to mitigate these effects. This research examines the lived experiences of families with children with DDs participating in recreational dance programs to understand the myriad of effects on all participants: children with DDs, families, and dance instructors.

Methods

This thesis is the first academic work to analyze the stories of the Type 1 diabetic teen girls of adolescent fiction. In novels for adolescent readers, these girls are often White, female, heterosexual, and middle class—resulting in a collective disability narrative that portrays an “every girl” and lacks cultural or political dimensions. This qualitative study is a video-cued multivocal ethnography that analyzed the clinical reasoning and perspectives of psychotherapists using Tabletop Role-Playing Games (TRPG) as a therapeutic treatment for children and adolescents diagnosed with Autism Spectrum conditions. With a growing number of TRPG therapists nationwide using this modality in their clinical practices, this study aimed to develop a clearer understanding of the ways in which their therapeutic orientation, gaming practices, and knowledge of Autism Spectrum Conditions informs their use of TRPG psychotherapy with Autistic clients.
