A Mixed-Methods Study Of Religious, Spiritual, And Psychological Change In Ireland, James D. Conway
A Mixed-Methods Study Of Religious, Spiritual, And Psychological Change In Ireland, James D. Conway
Doctor of Psychology (PsyD)
Throughout the 20th century, over 90% of all individuals living in Ireland identified as Roman Catholic, but recent shifts have altered the country's religious landscape. According to the most recent national census, 70% of individuals still identify as Catholic (Central Statistics Office, 2023). However, they also reported a 187% increase in those claiming “no religion” over the last eleven years—making it now the second largest group (Central Statistics Office, 2023). This mixed-methods study investigated the factors behind these changes, surveying one hundred nine Irish individuals from sixteen counties using six validated measures, and conducting thirteen qualitative interviews. Quantitative and qualitative …
An Exploration Of Social Connection And Spiritual Well-Being In Young Adults, Rebecca Crowder
An Exploration Of Social Connection And Spiritual Well-Being In Young Adults, Rebecca Crowder
Doctor of Psychology (PsyD)
Loneliness is multi-faceted, but few studies have tried to define or explore the experience of spiritual loneliness, and fewer still have explored loneliness’s relation to spiritual well-being (Chornobai, 2020). To date, no known studies have explored in what way a dyadic experience focused on spiritual exercises might impact spiritual loneliness and spiritual well-being in young adults. This study examined in what way spending time with a person in a spiritual context (i.e., practicing Lectio Divina as a dyad), impacts a person’s experience of spiritual loneliness, spiritual well-being, and friendship. Participants were randomly assigned to one of three intervention groups: Lectio …

Études primaires
We investigated the availability and use of workplace mental health (MH) supports during the COVID-19 pandemic in a Canadian cohort of healthcare workers (HCW) and measured anxiety and depression by the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) completed at four contacts 2020–2022. Reports were available for 4400 HCW working with patients. Half the HCWs had a clinically significant HADS score at one or more contacts Access to MH supports increased during the pandemic, with 94% reporting access to some workplace support by 2022: 47% had made use of at least one support. 25% of those with high HADS scores used …

The aim of this study was to serve as a preliminary analysis to investigate the prevalence of sexual violence in the Belize defense and police force, the impact on victim’s lives, and the culture of military/police force. This mixed-methods study was conducted through a Qualtrics survey, and 34 participants were obtained. This survey contained a variety of dichotomous, multiple-response, and open-ended questions. This study found that 54.5% reported as a victim of sexual violence in the workplace. We also found that most victims did not report the crime, and many victims’ perceptions of their workplace has changed. A thematic content …
Comparing The Effects Of Choice And Performance Feedback On The Writing Fluency Outcomes Of Elementary Students, Collin M. Seifert
Comparing The Effects Of Choice And Performance Feedback On The Writing Fluency Outcomes Of Elementary Students, Collin M. Seifert
All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects
Performance feedback is an effective intervention that improves the writing outcomes of elementary students. Although choice has been referred to as a powerful tool in improving the writing of students, little empirical research has been conducted that investigates the effectiveness of choice when implemented in a class-wide setting. Therefore, the current study used a randomized controlled trial design to compare the effects of performance feedback and choice on the writing fluency outcomes of 40 fourth-grade elementary students in one elementary school. Participants were randomly assigned to either a performance feedback condition (n = 20) or a choice condition (n = …
Enhancing A School Readiness Skill Through A Mindfulness-Based Intervention: Soles Of The Feet, Caitlin J. Moen
Enhancing A School Readiness Skill Through A Mindfulness-Based Intervention: Soles Of The Feet, Caitlin J. Moen
All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects
Approximately one million children enroll in kindergarten each year with varying levels of experience and school readiness. Fundamental school readiness skills parallel executive functioning skills, which multiple interventions are able to target. School readiness intervention programs can be costly and require a considerable amount of training. Teachers and other school staff need an affordable, easy-to-implement intervention that targets critical school readiness skills. Mindfulness-based interventions (MBIs) have been found to improve executive functioning skills like self-regulation, which is skill for school readiness. Soles of the Feet (SOF) is an evidence-based MBI that has been found effective for increasing self-regulation in schoolaged …
Developing A Gender Diverse Stimulus Set For Emotion Expressions, Amir Robertson
Developing A Gender Diverse Stimulus Set For Emotion Expressions, Amir Robertson
Honors Theses and Capstones
Much past research has demonstrated that gender plays an important role in emotion perception, such that gendered stereotypes about emotion seem to shape how we perceive and interpret the emotion expressions of men and women. However, the stimulus sets that are typically used in the vast majority of this research have been based on binary ideas of gender, and purposefully limit common elements of gender presentation, with models posing with limited accessories or personal aesthetic choices. In everyday life, however, individuals’ gender and gender presentation are not limited in these ways and likely contribute in important ways to how we …
How To Frame The Frame Of Reference: A Comparison Of Contextualization Methods, Ann E. Schlotzhauer, Matthew A. Ng, Shiyang Su
How To Frame The Frame Of Reference: A Comparison Of Contextualization Methods, Ann E. Schlotzhauer, Matthew A. Ng, Shiyang Su
Psychological Science Faculty Research & Creative Works
Personality measures are popular and useful in employment selection and academic contexts; however, concerns have been voiced regarding the strength of their association with desirable criteria. Contextualization (i.e., modifying measures to reflect the desired frame of reference, like work or school) has emerged as a promising option. Research has demonstrated that contextualizing personality measures increases predictive validity and enhances participants' perceptions of the assessments. However, few studies have compared contextualization methods to one another and, to date, only one study has compared the two most common forms of contextualization (i.e., instruction and tag contextualization), returning inconsistent findings. In a within-person, …

The Role Of Affective States In The Process Of Goal Setting, Vahe Permzadian, Teng Zhao
The Role Of Affective States In The Process Of Goal Setting, Vahe Permzadian, Teng Zhao
Psychological Science Faculty Research & Creative Works
Given that employee performance goals are major determinants of work motivation and performance, examining the factors that influence goal setting has generated substantial research interest. Despite decades of work, however, the relationship between affect and goal setting is poorly understood. Based on mood-as-information and arousal-as-information theories, our study examines the extent that affective valence and affective arousal influence goal-setting processes and, in particular, the extent that the activation level moderates the effect of affective valence. Since theoretical perspectives that attempt to explain the process of goal setting are commonly based on an expectancy-value framework, we examined the effects of affective …
Individual Differences In Music-Evoked Autobiographical Memories, Kelly Jakubowski, Edith Lee, Elena Bai, Amy M. Belfi
Individual Differences In Music-Evoked Autobiographical Memories, Kelly Jakubowski, Edith Lee, Elena Bai, Amy M. Belfi
Psychological Science Faculty Research & Creative Works
Music is increasingly used as a cue for autobiographical memories in psychological research and clinical interventions. Despite the burgeoning body of evidence on the phenomenology of music-evoked autobiographical memories (MEAMs), few previous studies have focused in detail on how the capacities and experiences of individual listeners impact features of MEAMs. The present work examined the relationship of individual differences in visual and auditory imagery, musical familiarity and engagement, musical reward sensitivity, musical training, and gender to MEAM features. Participants (N = 304, ages 18–25 years, 156 female) completed a self-selected MEAM task, in which they described an autobiographical memory they …

"Ruskiy Mir" And "Ukrainskyi Svit": Ontological And Anthropological Antagonists, Liudmyla Fylypovych, Oksana Horkusha
Occasional Papers on Religion in Eastern Europe
The article focuses on a crucial issue of global interest--attempts of the Russian Federation to reformat the world according to the worldview model of the "Ruskiy mir." The paradigm of the "Ruskiy mir" assumes a system of values (ontological, anthropological, theological, and historiographical ideas and behavioral models) programmed by the entire russian history, as defined by russian culture, traditions, and the russian worldview. According to the "Russian worldview," the world should have a different structure, and the global international system should have a different format: Moscow (the Russian Empire and the Russian Federation) should be at the center of the …

The Benefits Of Voluntary Disorienting Dilemmas For A Transformational Life: A Grounded Theory Study In Transformational Learning, Rebecca Bamberger
Theses and Dissertations
Being uncomfortable by choice as a means of personal growth has been touted for hundreds of years among scholars, philosophers, religious leaders, modern pop culture icons, and more. Yet, research pertaining to the benefits of being uncomfortable by choice is sparse. This qualitative, grounded theory study addressed the first step of transformational learning: the disorienting dilemma. Seventy participants located in America participated in extensive interviews to answer this study’s research question, “what if any, are the benefits of voluntary disorienting dilemmas?” Additional research questions, “what is the meaning(s) of voluntary disorienting dilemmas?” and “would subjects repeat their voluntary disorienting dilemmas …

An integrative systematic review with a narrative synthesis was conducted to explore and identify the benefits of integrating a therapy animal into trauma-informed treatment for children and adolescent survivors of sexual abuse. This review detailed various ways therapy animals were incorporated into treatment and when the integration of therapy animals is most and least beneficial. Methods. Eight electronic databases were searched for relevant articles. The search was limited to peer-reviewed articles published in the English-language. Articles published in and out of the United States were included, without a limit on date published, in order to capture any cultural differences and …
Immigrant Mothers: A Testimonio, Brenda Garcia Castro
Immigrant Mothers: A Testimonio, Brenda Garcia Castro
Theses and Dissertations
International immigration creates economic, demographic, and cultural shifts worldwide. The process of migration entails steps beginning from the decision to migrate, the migration journey and experiences upon arrival to the host country. Factors such as age at time of migration, traditions, and beliefs of those who migrate inform various aspects of their lives, such as parenting practices. Once in the new country, immigrants face various challenges and stressors such as discrimination, acculturation, language barriers and lack of opportunities due to legal status. These stressors are often compounded with existing pre-migration trauma that result in higher risk of mental health concerns …
A Systematic Review Of Adolescent Girls’ Perception Of Body Image And Self-Esteem Through Participatory Digital Storytelling Groups, Alecia R. Jones
A Systematic Review Of Adolescent Girls’ Perception Of Body Image And Self-Esteem Through Participatory Digital Storytelling Groups, Alecia R. Jones
Theses and Dissertations
Adolescent girls face increased pressure to conform to societal standards. As social beings, adolescent girls gravitate to social media as an outlet for peer interaction, community, and validation. Research has found that at the critical age of adolescence, 12-18, girls experience appearance comparison on social media, which can lead to internalizing unrealistic beauty standards and negative self-appraisal. Digital storytelling emerges as a source of encouragement, providing a platform for empowerment, self-expression, community engagement, and a safe space for adolescent girls to share their body image and self-esteem experiences. This Systematic Review sought to synthesize findings of qualitative and mixed-methods studies …
The Intergenerational Transmission Of Culture Through Attachment-Based Parenting Practices And Their Effect On Child Neurology: A Systematic Review, Elvina Chow
Theses and Dissertations
The process of intergenerational transmission process is complex and involves a dynamic exchange of explicit teachings, implicit cues, and lived experiences within the parent-child relationship. This systematic review examined the intricate relationship between the intergenerational transmission of cultural values, attachment-based parenting, and child neurology through a mixed-methods approach. Findings suggest that culture is transmitted via intergenerational transmission in the parent-child dyad through parental security and trust, adverse childhood experiences (ACEs), and cultural influences on parenting practices. Moreover, the literature suggests that attachment-based parenting affects the intergenerational transmission of culture, values, and beliefs through the parent-child relationship quality, open communication, and …
Systematic Review Of The Risks, Consequences, Protective Factors, And Treatment Of Infidelity For Military Couples, Maria Allyson Ayson
Systematic Review Of The Risks, Consequences, Protective Factors, And Treatment Of Infidelity For Military Couples, Maria Allyson Ayson
Theses and Dissertations
This systematic review examines literature related to the phenomenon of infidelity in relation to military couples, particularly regarding the risk factors, protective factors, and relational outcomes of infidelity in relation to the military lifestyle. Aspects of this lifestyle, including deployment, relocation, combat exposure, and the plethora of mental health issues subsequent to these experiences, are common instigators of adverse relational events like infidelity, which itself is a catalyst for further relational injury. Furthermore, treatments available for military couples, which have been adapted from various therapy modalities used with civilian couples, are also summarized in this review to consolidate and discuss …
Giving People The Words To Say No Leads Them To Feel Freer To Say Yes, Rachel Schlund, Roseanna Sommers, Vanessa K. Bohns
Giving People The Words To Say No Leads Them To Feel Freer To Say Yes, Rachel Schlund, Roseanna Sommers, Vanessa K. Bohns
Articles
We examine how to structure requests to help people feel they can say no (or yes) more voluntarily. Specifically, we examine the effect of having the requester provide the request-target with an explicit phrase they can use to decline requests. Part of the difficulty of saying no is finding the words to do so when put on the spot. Providing individuals with an explicit script they can use to decline a request may help override implicit scripts and norms of politeness that generally dictate compliance. This should make individuals feel more comfortable refusing requests and make agreement feel more voluntary. …

Testing A Conceptual Model Of Age, Gender, Perceived Discrimination And Well-Being, Kelly Smith
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Both age and gender are personal characteristics that are at least in part outwardly visible and act as a category for social judgments (Cuddy & Fiske, 2002). The current study examined associations among individuals’ views on their aging, their gender typicality, well-being, and perceived discrimination. Research Question 1 asked whether views on aging and gender typicality interact to influence perceptions of discrimination; Research Question 2 explored the same potential interactions’ influence on well-being. Research Question 3 explored whether any interaction between views on aging and gender typicality and well-being was mediated by perceptions of discrimination. Participants represented the adult life …

Effects Of Probabilistic Win-Paired-Cue Delivery On Loss Trials On Risky Choice In Rats, Connor M. Lambert
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Problem gambling, or Gambling Disorder, is a behavioral disorder that affects 2.5% of the U.S. population and can result in detriments to physical, mental, and financial well-being. Electronic gambling machines (e.g., slot machines, video poker, pachinko) may be more addictive than other forms of gambling (e.g., table games, sports betting). Electronic gambling machines present a series of audiovisual stimuli concurrently with winning and some losing outcomes. Previous research in human and non-human animals has found increased levels of risky choice when audiovisual stimuli are presented with wins compared to their absence. The present study was arranged to evaluate how a …

Examining Driver Preferences For Intelligent Audiovisual Warnings At Highway-Rail Grade Crossings, Samantha Walker
Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports
Driver noncompliance and poor decision-making are known contributors to highway-rail grade crossing incidents and accidents. Recent advances in intelligent in-vehicle warning systems have provided new opportunities for improved safety at highway-rail grade crossings. Intelligent warning systems that can communicate between connected vehicles and the infrastructure (V2I) have been proposed to improve safety. However, limited human factors research has been conducted regarding how drivers might react to these in-vehicle warnings. This study evaluated driver preferences, use cases, and message design variations for in-vehicle audiovisual warnings for rail crossing warning violations by varying two message factors: message length and whether the message …

Background: Protecting public health from infectious diseases often relies on the cooperation of citizens, especially when self-care interventions are the only viable tools for disease mitigation. Accordingly, social aspects related to public opinion have been studied in the context of the recent COVID-19 pandemic. However, a comprehensive understanding of the effects of opinion-related factors on disease spread still requires further exploration. Methods: We propose an agent-based simulation framework incorporating opinion dynamics within an epidemic model based on the assumption that mass media channels play a leading role in opinion dynamics. The model simulates how opinions about preventive interventions change over …
