The Japanese language has a colour term, 'ao' (or 'aoi'), which is usually referred to in bilingual dictionaries as being the equivalent of English 'blue'. Very often, however, it is used to describe things which English speakers would describe as being green. Granny Smith apples are 'ao', so are all Westerners' eyes, regardless of whether they would be described as being 'blue' or 'green' in English. The sky and the sea are prototypically 'ao', but this term is also used to describe lawns, forests, traffic lights and unripe tomatoes. This paper is illustrative of the conflict of languages in a sociolinguistic landscape. It asserts that in French-speaking world, notably Black Africa and the West Indies, politics in collusion with French language policies work for the imperceptible, but gradual disappearance of vernaculars on behalf of the prestige of French language. The International Organization of "Francophonie" is depicted as being instrumental in the ongoing strategy. The article ends up suggesting criteria for a harmonious cohabitation of languages in the above-mentioned ommunities.

This paper presents an analysis of the stress system in the Nahualá dialect of K’ichee’ (a Mayan language spoken in Western Guatemala) and discusses the theoretical implications of K’ichee’ stress. In K’ichee’, quantity sensitivity is dependent on position within a word rather than syllable structure. The analysis of K’ichee’ suggests the need for a uniform analysis of foot structure within OT so that stress is always dependent on foot structure rather than syllable structure (with the effects of quantity sensitivity resulting from the equation of a foot with a single syllable). This study examined occurrence of phrasal verbs in spoken English as evidenced in a popular American TV talk show and revealed to what extent phrasal verbs in spoken English are taught/reflected in ESL idioms books. The design of the present study consisted of four steps: a preliminary teacher survey, collecting and analyzing data of spoken and written English, determining two frequency lists, and comparing the two lists. This thesis introduces a new meaning of the word "textuality" based on its etymology, as a "woven thing. I reject the notion of isolatable entities that we call "words" and argue that language presents itself, in our experience, as "textual." In this sense, "textuality" is not limited to written texts, but it applies to every linguistic media: thinking, writing, and speaking.

I attempt a distinction between "textuality" and "contextuality" which allows me to isolate this phenomenon, "textuality," and to proceed with a phenomenological description of its features and structures. Among these, I describe to some length what I call "diesis," …
