Xiaoshan Xu Papers

We investigated the series of temperature and field-driven transitions in LuFe2O4 by optical and Mossbauer spectroscopies, magnetization, and x-ray scattering in order to understand the interplay between charge, structure, and magnetism in this multiferroic material. We demonstrate that charge fluctuation has an onset well below the charge ordering transition, supporting the ‘‘order by fluctuation’’ mechanism for the development of charge order superstructure. Bragg splitting and large magneto-optical contrast suggest a low-temperature monoclinic distortion that can be driven by both temperature and magnetic field.

This paper provides a quantitative comparison and explores the design space of lead zirconium titanate (PZT)–only and PZT-on-silicon length-extensional mode resonators for incorporation into radio frequency microelectromechanical system filters and oscillators. We experimentally measured the correlation of motional impedance (RX) and quality factor (Q) with the resonators’ silicon layer thickness (tSi). For identical lateral dimensions and PZT-layer thicknesses (tPZT), the PZT-on-silicon resonator has higher resonant frequency (fC), higher Q (5100 versus 140), lower RX (51 Ω versus 205 Ω), and better linearity [third-order input intercept …

). Size Dependency Of The Elastic Modulus Of Zno Nanowires: Surface Stress Effect, Guofeng Wang, Xiaodong Li

Faculty Publications

Relation between the elastic modulus and the diameter (D) of ZnOnanowires was elucidated using a model with the calculated ZnOsurface stresses as input. We predict for ZnOnanowires due to surface stress effect: (1) when D>20nm, the elastic modulus would be lower than the bulk modulus and decrease with the decreasing diameter, (2) when 20nm>D>2nm, the nanowires with a longer length and a wurtzite crystal structure could be mechanically unstable, and (3) when D<2nm, the elastic modulus would be higher than that of the bulk value and increase with a decrease in nanowire diameter.

Nanoindentation in conjunction with piezoresponse force microscopy was used to study domain switching and to measure the mechanical properties of individual ferroelectric domains in a tetragonal BaTiO3 single crystal. It was found that nanoindentation has induced local domain switching; the a and c domains of BaTiO3 have different elastic moduli but similar hardness.Nanoindentationmodulus mapping on the a and c domains further confirmed such difference in elasticity. Finite element modeling was used to simulate the von Mises stress and plastic strain profiles of the indentations on both a and c domains, which introduces a much higher stress level than …

Parmela Based Simulations On Jefferson Lab Free Electron Laser Injector, Deepesh Kumar Koppunuru Oct 2007

Parmela Based Simulations On Jefferson Lab Free Electron Laser Injector, Deepesh Kumar Koppunuru

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Free Electron Lasers (FELs) have many applications and are under continuing development to meet various needs and in areas from materials processing to life sciences research. This is because of its unique capability of generating high-average power, coherent, and wavelength tunable light by employing relativistic beam of un-bounded electrons. The main challenge in FEL development is the generation of a high intensity, high-quality electron beam in an injector. Further acceleration to relativistic energies is accomplished in a linear accelerator (LINAC) for producing laser light in a device known as wiggler. The Jefferson Lab FEL team intents to increase the injector …

The Fabrication And Characterization Of Granular Aluminium/Palladium Bilayer Microbolometers, Thomas E. Wilson

Physics Faculty Research

Superconducting granular aluminium/palladium bilayer microbolometers with subnanosecond response can be easily fabricated using an all lift-off process with image-reversal lithography. The palladium capping layer allows for convenient and reproducible Ohmic contacts to be made to the device. We report their fabrication, resistance–current calibration, responsivity and response time. Finally, a deconvolution algorithm is used to improve the time resolution to approximately 1 ns while obtaining the incident photon and phonon fluxes in both direct photoexcitation and phonon heat pulse experiments.

Parallel Fast Multipole Method For Molecular Dynamics, Reid G. Ormseth Jun 2007

Parallel Fast Multipole Method For Molecular Dynamics, Reid G. Ormseth

Theses and Dissertations

We report on a parallel version of the Fast Multipole Method (FMM) implemented in the classical molecular dynamics code, NAMD (Not Another Molecular Dynamics program). This novel implementation of FMM aims to minimize interprocessor communication through the modification of the FMM grid to match the hybrid force and spatial decomposition scheme already present in NAMD. This new implementation has the benefit of replacing all-to-all communications broadcasts with direct communications between nearest neighbors. This results in a significant reduction in the amount of communication compared to earlier attempts to integrate FMM into common molecular dynamics programs. The early performance of FMM …

Investigation Of Magnetic Field Profile Effects In Hall Thrusters, Oren Kornberg Apr 2007

Investigation Of Magnetic Field Profile Effects In Hall Thrusters, Oren Kornberg

Master's Theses - Daytona Beach

The purpose of this study was to show the relationship of different magnetic field profiles to the acceleration region length of a Hall thruster. The general transport equations were simplified and solved using a one-dimensional analysis. Some of the model assumptions include quasineutrality, Maxwellian electrons, and negligible thruster wall effects. The solved equation kept magnetic field as an input to the model for the analysis. The magnetic field was altered by changing the shape through the thruster, while keeping the maximum point fixed, and by shifting the profile, while keeping the shape fixed. Results indicate a strong correlation between the …

Revisiting Hafemeister’S ‘Science And Society’ Tests, Robert J. Brecha, Rex L. Berney, Bruce A. Craver

Physics Faculty Publications

We revisit a series of papers on science and society issues by David Hafemeister in the 1970s and 1980s. The emphasis in the present work is on world oil production limits and some consequences of various possible scenarios for the near future. Some of the data and scenarios used by Hafemeister are updated for U.S. oil production in the past two decades and extended to an analysis of a peak in world oil production in the future. We discuss some simple scenarios for future energy use patterns and look at the consequence of these scenarios as world oil production begins …

Anisotropic Magnetoresistance In Colossal Magnetoresistive La1−XsrXMno3 Thin Films, Jeng-Bang Yau, X. Hong, A. Posadas, C. H. Ahn, W. Gao, E. Altman, Y. Bason, L. Klein, M. Sidorov, Z. Krivokapic Jan 2007

Anisotropic Magnetoresistance In Colossal Magnetoresistive La1−XsrXMno3 Thin Films, Jeng-Bang Yau, X. Hong, A. Posadas, C. H. Ahn, W. Gao, E. Altman, Y. Bason, L. Klein, M. Sidorov, Z. Krivokapic

Xia Hong Publications

We report on magnetic field and temperature-dependent measurements of the anisotropic magnetoresistance (AMR) in epitaxial La1−xSrxMnO3 (LSMO) thin films. While in 3d ferromagnetic alloys increasing the magnetization, either by reducing the temperature or increasing the magnetic field, increases the AMR, we find that in LSMO films the AMR dependence on magnetization displays nonmonotonic behavior which becomes particularly pronounced in lightly doped compounds. We believe that this behavior is related to the inhomogeneity exhibited by these materials.

Planar Hall Effect In Epitaxial Thin Films Of Magnetite, Y. Bason, L. Klein, H. Q. Wang, J. Hoffman, X. Hong, V. E. Henrich, C. H. Ahn Jan 2007

Planar Hall Effect In Epitaxial Thin Films Of Magnetite, Y. Bason, L. Klein, H. Q. Wang, J. Hoffman, X. Hong, V. E. Henrich, C. H. Ahn

Xia Hong Publications

We measured the planar Hall effect (PHE) of magnetite (Fe3O4) films between 150 and 350 K. The PHE was measured both with a constant magnetic field rotating in the plane of the sample and in a remanent state after applying a field in specific directions. The PHE amplitude decreases with temperature; however, it changes little between 300 and 350 K. The remanent PHE signal is as high as 10 V/A, larger than previously observed in manganite films. We also measured the PHE in the remanent state and found that its magnitude and stability make it a …

Magnetic Enhancement In Cobalt-Manganese Alloy Clusters, Shuangye Yin, Ramiro Moro, Xiaoshan Xu, Walter A. De Heer Jan 2007

Magnetic Enhancement In Cobalt-Manganese Alloy Clusters, Shuangye Yin, Ramiro Moro, Xiaoshan Xu, Walter A. De Heer

Xiaoshan Xu Papers

Magnetic moments of CoNMnM and CoNVM clusters (N ≤ 60; M ≤ N/3) are measured in molecular beams using the Stern-Gerlach deflection method. Surprisingly, the per atom average moments of CoNMnM clusters are found to increase with Mn concentration, in contrast to bulk CoMn. The enhancement with Mn doping is found to be independent of cluster size and composition in the size range studied. Meanwhile, CoNVM clusters show reduction of average moments with increasing V doping, consistent with what is expected in bulk CoV. The results are …

Rapid Structural Mapping Of Ternary Metallic Alloy Systems Using The Combinatorial Approach And Cluster Analysis, C. J. Long, Jason R. Hattrick-Simpers, M. Murakami, R. C. Srivastava, I. Takeuchi, V. L. Karen, X. Li Jan 2007

Rapid Structural Mapping Of Ternary Metallic Alloy Systems Using The Combinatorial Approach And Cluster Analysis, C. J. Long, Jason R. Hattrick-Simpers, M. Murakami, R. C. Srivastava, I. Takeuchi, V. L. Karen, X. Li

Faculty Publications

We are developing a procedure for the quick identification of structural phases in thin film composition spread experiments which map large fractions of compositional phase diagrams of ternary metallic alloy systems. An in-house scanning x-ray microdiffractometer is used to obtain x-ray spectra from 273 different compositions on a single composition spread library. A cluster analysissoftware is then used to sort the spectra into groups in order to rapidly discover the distribution of phases on the ternary diagram. The most representative pattern of each group is then compared to a database of known structures to identify known phases. Using this method, …

Self-Assembled Composite Nano-/Micronecklaces With Sio2 Beads In Boron Strings, Hai Ni, Xiaodong Li

Faculty Publications

Nano-/micronecklaces with SiO2 beads in boron strings were synthesized by simply sublimating the desired powders in a sealed quartz tube at high temperature. The boron strings have a rectangular cross section with width varying from 80to1000nm while the SiO2 beads bear either spindle or spherical shape with a size ranging from 100nmto5μm. The spacing between the SiO2 beads is uniform in each boron string. Both the boron strings and the SiO2 beads are amorphous and free of defects. The supersaturated vapors of silicon and oxygen induced the SiO2 bead formation.

Characterization And Quantum Efficiency Validation Of Ingaas Linear Focal Plane Array, Christopher Salenga Garcia Apr 2006

Characterization And Quantum Efficiency Validation Of Ingaas Linear Focal Plane Array, Christopher Salenga Garcia

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

A 1x1024 InGaAs linear hybrid focal plane array (FPA) with CMOS readout was characterized at room temperature to analyze its electrical and optical properties and to measure its performance parameters.

The most important parameter of an FPA is the gain constant K, which allows conversion of the FPA output measurement unit from digital counts into the number of generated signal electrons. For FPAs with CMOS readout, the commonly used meanvariance method for determining K often underestimates its value. A more reliable method for finding K is the photon transfer technique, which is developed for FPAs with CCD readout. This …

Reproducibility Distinguishability And Correlation Of Fireball And Shockwave Dynamics In Explosive Munitions Detonations, Bryan J. Steward Mar 2006

Reproducibility Distinguishability And Correlation Of Fireball And Shockwave Dynamics In Explosive Munitions Detonations, Bryan J. Steward

Theses and Dissertations

The classification of battlespace detonations, specifically the determination of munitions type and size using temporal and spectral features of infrared emissions, is a particularly challenging problem. The intense infrared radiation produced by the detonation of high explosives is largely unstudied. Furthermore, the time-varying fireball imagery and spectra are driven by many factors including the type, size and age of the chemical explosive, method of detonation, interaction with the environment, and the casing used to enclose the explosive. To distinguish between conventional military munitions and improvised or enhanced explosives, the current study investigates fireball expansion dynamics using high speed, multi-band imagery. …

Prediction Of The Temporal Evolution Of Solar X-Ray Flares, Aaron J. Williams Mar 2006

Prediction Of The Temporal Evolution Of Solar X-Ray Flares, Aaron J. Williams

Theses and Dissertations

A solar flare is an explosive release of stored magnetic energy on the Sun. Much of this energy is converted into x-ray photons which escape into space. As a solar flare begins, the 1-8 Å x-ray photon flux at Earth’s orbit, as measured by the GOES satellite, rapidly increases. It quickly reaches a peak and slowly decays. A plot of this flux exhibits an approximate lognormal shape. A lognormal function becomes a normal, symmetric, function when the logarithm of the independent variable is taken. Once the peak flux is reached, this symmetry is used to make a prediction of the …

Planar Hall-Effect Magnetic Random Access Memory, Y. Bason, L. Klein, J.-B. Yau, X. Hong, J. Hoffman, C. H. Ahn

Xia Hong Publications

We suggest a type of magnetic random access memory (MRAM) that is based on the phenomenon of the planar Hall effect (PHE) in magnetic films, and we demonstrate this idea with manganite films. The PHE-MRAM is structurally simpler than the currently developed MRAM that is based on magnetoresistance tunnel junctions, with the tunnel junction structure being replaced by a single-layer film.

Current Challenges In Autonomous Vehicle Development, Julianna Connelly Stockton, W. S. Hong, R. B. Mahoney, D. A. Sparrow

Mathematics Faculty Publications

The field of autonomous vehicles is a rapidly growing one, with significant interest from both government and industry sectors. Autonomous vehicles represent the intersection of artificial intelligence (AI) and robotics, combining decision-making with real-time control. Autonomous vehicles are desired for use in search and rescue, urban reconnaissance, mine detonation, supply convoys, and more. The general adage is to use robots for anything dull, dirty, dangerous or dumb. While a great deal of research has been done on autonomous systems, there are only a handful of fielded examples incorporating machine autonomy beyond the level of teleoperation, especially in outdoor/complex environments. Two types of electric discharges were used to demonstrate the validity of plasma surface treatment for superconducting radio-frequency (SRF) cavities. The experiments were performed on disc-shaped Nb samples and compared with identical samples treated with buffer chemical polishing (BCP) techniques. Surface analysis indicates comparable or superior properties of plasma-treated samples. These promising results are still preliminary and additional work is in progress.

Xia Hong Publications

The materials and magnetic properties of Cr-doped anatase TiO2 thin films deposited on LaAlO3(001) and SrTiO3(001) substrates by oxygen-plasma-assisted molecular beam epitaxy have been studied in detail to elucidate the origin of ferromagnetic ordering. Cr substitution for Ti in the anatase lattice, with no evidence of Cr interstitials, segregation, or secondary phases, was independently confirmed by transmission electron microscopy with energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy, extended x-ray absorption fine structure, and Rutherford backscattering spectrometry in the channeling geometry. Epitaxial films deposited at ~0.1 Å/ s were found to have a highly defected crystalline structure, as quantified …

Effect Of Electric Field Doping On The Anisotropic Magnetoresistance In Doped Manganites, X. Hong, J.-B. Yau, J. D. Hoffman, C. H. Ahn

Xia Hong Publications

We have modulated the anisotropic magnetoresistance (AMR) in 3–4 nm manganite films using the ferroelectric field effect—a method that electrostatically varies the carrier density without affecting the lattice distortion. While significant changes have been induced in TC and p, the AMR ratio remains the same when the magnetic state is not changed. This scaling behavior is in striking contrast to chemical doping results, where similar modulation of the carrier concentration (~0.1/Mn) changes the AMR ratio by ≥30%. The results reveal unambiguously the dominant role of chemical distortion in determining the AMR in manganites.

Monodomain Dynamics For Rigid Rod And Platelet Suspensions In Strongly Coupled Coplanar Linear Flow And Magnetic Fields. Ii. Kinetic Theory, M. Gregory Forest, Sarthok Sircar, Qi Wang, Ruhai Zhou

Mathematics & Statistics Faculty Publications

We establish reciprocity relations of the Doi-Hess kinetic theory for rigid rod macromolecular suspensions governed by the strong coupling among an excluded volume potential, linear flow, and a magnetic field. The relation provides a reduction of the flow and field driven Smoluchowski equation: from five parameters for coplanar linear flows and magnetic field, to two field parameters. The reduced model distinguishes flows with a rotational component, which map to simple shear (with rate parameter) subject to a transverse magnetic field (with strength parameter), and irrotational flows, for which the reduced model consists of a triaxial extensional flow (with two extensional …

Dynamics Of An Atmospheric Pressure Plasma Plume Generated By Submicrosecond Voltage Pulses, Xinpei Lu, Mounir Laroussi Jan 2006

Dynamics Of An Atmospheric Pressure Plasma Plume Generated By Submicrosecond Voltage Pulses, Xinpei Lu, Mounir Laroussi

Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

Nonequilibrium plasmas driven by submicrosecond high voltage pulses have been proven to produce high-energy electrons, which in turn lead to enhanced ionization and excitations. Here, we describe a device capable of launching a cold plasma plume in the surrounding air. This device, "the plasma pencil," is driven by few hundred nanosecond wide pulses at repetition rates of a few kilohertz. Correlation between current-voltage characteristics and fast photography shows that the plasma plume is in fact a small bulletlike volume of plasma traveling at unusually high velocities. A model based on photoionization is used to explain the propagation kinetics of the …

Fourier Transform Analysis Of Terahertz Radiation, Chikaodira N. Okpo Oct 2005

Fourier Transform Analysis Of Terahertz Radiation, Chikaodira N. Okpo

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Advances in terahertz radiation (T-rays) technology have great promise in various technological areas ranging from medical technology, imaging technology and accelerator technology. At Thomas Jefferson Laboratory, the Free Electron Laser division (FEL) produces very powerful beam of laser light by accelerating electrons in bunches along a beamline. This laser light absorbs and releases energy at various wavelengths. The new FEL upgrade led to the production of very bright terahertz (THz) radiation with an average power of 1 00watts which is about 100,000 times brighter than those produced elsewhere. These T-rays have very significant applications in the Laboratory. The most significant …
