Gauss-Lobatto Method For Nuclear Reactivity Calculation, Daniel Suescún-Díaz, Luis E. Cardoso-Páez, Diego Peña-Lara
Gauss-Lobatto Method For Nuclear Reactivity Calculation, Daniel Suescún-Díaz, Luis E. Cardoso-Páez, Diego Peña-Lara
Karbala International Journal of Modern Science
In this paper, we introduce a novel approach to numerical solving for nuclear reactivity using the inverse equation of point kinetics as a model. Our method leverages the Gauss-Lobatto quadrature, incorporating multiple time steps and nodes derived from Legendre polynomials of varying orders. To enhance the accuracy of the differential component of the inverse equation, we employed a differential scheme based on the Gauss-Lobatto quadrature nodes. To address fluctuations in neutron population density, we implemented a second-order low-pass Butterworth filter with a minimal window length of M = 3 samples. Through extensive numerical simulations, we assessed the precision of our …

Electricity Generation From Air Movements For Microelectronics Applications, Rahul Nair, Kezang Choden
Australia-Bhutan Research Conference
This paper is about generating limited amount of electricity from natural air movements and air movements in a controlled environment . This is specifically applicable and useful in microelectronics application and as a pre charging . Air is composed of 71% Nitrogen and 21 % oxygen and rest of the gases comprising 8%. We understand that air also takes up from free radicals in the atmosphere due to various chemical reactions. The free radicals and ions have a random motion and movement in the air column. The controlled movement of air with charged particles which is essentially the free radicals …

The focus of this dissertation is insect blood (Hemolymph). Hemolymph is analyzed by taking a materials science approach. Rheological characterization of hemolymph has been performed for the first time. Owing to a minute amount of available material, a new protocol was established where Magnetic Rotational Spectroscopy (MRS) with ferromagnetic nanorods was employed. The challenge was examining the microliter droplets' viscosity in less than a few minutes. This challenge was successfully resolved.
Blood is critical for the insect's survival: after wounding, the insect has to seal the wound quickly, in a few minutes. As the mechanism of fast clotting has never …

Since drones cannot fly in any kind of weather, they are not safe for time-sensitive activities. The study examines how the passage of weather systems in Iraq leads to the ban on drone flights, and how these weather conditions impact the aerodynamic forces of the drone. Hourly climate data for the study area were obtained from ECMWF ERA5 and CAMS in NetCDF format for four climate stations (Erbil, Baghdad, Rutbah, and Basrah). A ScanEagle drone was chosen for this study. The Python programming language was used to perform mathematical operations to calculate the ban on drone flights. ArcGIS 10.8 was …

In this study, we consider three different machine-learning methods—a three-hidden-layer neural network, support vector regression, and Gaussian process regression—and compare how well they can learn from a synthetic data set for proton acceleration in the Target Normal Sheath Acceleration regime. The synthetic data set was generated from a previously published theoretical model by Fuchs et al. 2005 that we modified. Once trained, these machine-learning methods can assist with efforts to maximize the peak proton energy, or with the more general problem of configuring the laser system to produce a proton energy spectrum with desired characteristics. In our study, we focus …

Very-high-energy (0.1-100 TeV) gamma-ray emissions were observed in High-Altitude Water Cherenkov (HAWC) data from the lobes of the micro quasar SS 433, making them the first set of astrophysical jets that were resolved at TeV energies. In this work, we update the analysis of SS 433 using 2565 days of data from the HAWC observatory. Our analysis reports the detection of a point-like source in the east lobe at a significance of 6.6σ and in the west lobe at a significance of 8.2σ. For each jet lobe, we localize the gamma-ray emission and identify a best-fit position. The locations are …

Context. Supernova remnants (SNRs) are believed to be capable of accelerating cosmic rays (CRs) to PeV energies. SNR G106.3+2.7 is a prime PeVatron candidate. It is formed by a head region, where the pulsar J2229+6114 and its boomerang-shaped pulsar wind nebula are located, and a tail region containing SN ejecta. The lack of observed gamma ray emission from the two regions of this SNR has made it difficult to assess which region would be responsible for the PeV CRs. Aims. We aim to characterize the very-high-energy (VHE, 0.1-100 TeV) gamma ray emission from SNR G106.3+2.7 by determining the morphology and …

The origin of high-energy galactic cosmic rays is yet to be understood, but some galactic cosmic-ray accelerators can accelerate cosmic rays up to PeV energies. The high-energy cosmic rays are expected to interact with the surrounding material or radiation, resulting in the production of gamma-rays and neutrinos. To optimize for the detection of such associated production of gamma-rays and neutrinos for a given source morphology and spectrum, a multimessenger analysis that combines gamma-rays and neutrinos is required. In this study, we use the MultiMission Maximum Likelihood framework with IceCube Maximum Likelihood Analysis software and HAWC Accelerated Likelihood to search for …

The first TeV γ-ray source with no lower energy counterparts, TeV J2032+4130, was discovered by HEGRA. It appears in the third HAWC catalog as 3HWC J2031+415 and it is a bright TeV γ-ray source whose emission has previously been resolved as two sources: HAWC J2031+415 and HAWC J2030+409. While HAWC J2030+409 has since been associated with the Fermi Large Area Telescope Cygnus Cocoon, no such association for HAWC J2031+415 has yet been found. In this work, we investigate the spectrum and energy-dependent morphology of HAWC J2031+415. We associate HAWC J2031+415 with a γ-ray binary system containing the pulsar PSR J2032+4127 …

Microquasars are laboratories for the study of jets of relativistic particles produced by accretion onto a spinning black hole. Microquasars are near enough to allow detailed imaging of spatial features across the multiwavelength spectrum. The recent extension measurement of the spatial morphology of a microquasar, SS 433, to TeV gamma rays1 localizes the acceleration of electrons at shocks in the jet far from the black hole2. V4641 Sagittarii (V4641 Sgr) is a similar binary system with a black hole and B-type main-sequence companion star and has an orbit period of 2.8 days (refs. 3,4). It stands …

Super-Resolution Magnetic Microscopy And Earth’S Field Magnetometry With Color Centers In Diamond, Nazanin Mosavian
Optical Science and Engineering ETDs
In recent years, the negatively charged nitrogen- vacancy (NV) center has emerged as a promising solid-state color center capable of measuring magnetic fields with high sensi- tivity and spatial resolution under ambient conditions. In this thesis I will discuss how we perform super resolution magnetic microscopy and acquire magnetic field images of nanoparticle samples at 100 nm resolution. I will explain how 3D flux concentrators increase magnetic field amplitude and allows us to measure vector component magnetic fields as low as 50 µT with a diamond magnetometer, without the use of an additional bias magnetic field. I also describe how …

We present the most precise measurements to date for the spatial extension and energy spectrum of the γ-ray region between a pulsar's wind nebula and the interstellar medium, better known as the halo, present around Geminga and PSR B0656+14 (Monogem) using ∼2398 days of >1 TeV data collected by the HAWC observatory. We interpret the data using a physically motivated model for the diffuse γ-ray emission generated from positrons and electrons (e±) injected by the pulsar wind nebula and inverse Compton scattering with interstellar radiation fields. We find the morphologies of the regions inside these halos are characterized …

This paper investigates the origin of the γ-ray emission from MGRO J1908+06 in the GeV-TeV energy band. By analyzing the data collected by the Fermi Large Area Telescope, the Very Energetic Radiation Imaging Telescope Array System, and High-Altitude Water Cherenkov, with the addition of spectral data previously reported by LHAASO, a multiwavelength study of the morphological and spectral features of MGRO J1908+06 provides insight into the origin of the γ-ray emission. The mechanism behind the bright TeV emission is studied by constraining the magnetic field strength, the source age, and the distance through detailed broadband modeling. Both spectral shape and …

Measuring The Ion Temperature Of A Plasma Jet Undergoing Instability-Driven Heating, Mario Avila
Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses
Outlined are arrangements to measure the ion temperature of a plasma jet undergoing instabilities and an examination of experiment findings. The jet, formed by puffing a controlled amount of Nitrogen or Argon gas into Embry-Riddle's cylindrical vacuum chamber and then ionizing it via high-voltage electronically switched capacitor banks, is regulated to undergo three distinct instability regimes, stable, current-driven, and pinched (or detached), dependent on the voltage of an externally applied bias field and initial conditions. Ion temperature measurements of plasma are inferred through analysis of the Doppler-broadening observed spectroscopically at relevant wavelengths. To improve measurements, this arrangement implements a unique …

Understanding the complete nature of Galactic sources that accelerate cosmic rays up to 1015 eV energy (Galactic PeVatrons) is still an unsolved problem in high-energy astrophysics. Although supernova remnants have long been considered as the best candidates for Galactic PeVatrons, a clear association of SNRs with PeVatrons needs further exploration. Recently, the LHAASO collaboration published its first catalog of 90 very high energy (VHE) gamma-ray sources, and a few of them have no obvious counterparts at other wavelengths. Here, we will present morphology and spectral analysis of one such unassociated source LHAASO J2108+5157 using VERITAS and HAWC data.

Galactic PeVatrons are astrophysical sources accelerating particles up to a few PeV (∼1015 eV) energies. The primary signature of 100 TeV γ rays may come from PeV protons or multihundred TeV (not PeV) electrons. The search for PeVatrons has been one of the key science topics for VERITAS and HAWC. In 2021, LHAASO detected 14 steady γ-ray sources with photon energies above 100 TeV, up to 1.4 PeV. This provides a clear list of PeVatron candidates for further study with VERITAS and HAWC. Most of these sources contain possible source associations, such as supernova remnants, pulsar wind nebulae, and …

High energy γ-ray observations are an essential probe of cosmic-ray acceleration mechanisms. The detection of the highest energy γ rays and the shortest timescales of variability are the key to improve our understanding of the acceleration processes and the environment of the cosmic accelerators. The High-Altitude Water Cherenkov (HAWC) experiment is a large field-of-view, multi-TeV, γ-ray observatory continuously operating at 4100 m a.s.l. since March 2015. The HAWC observatory has an order of magnitude better sensitivity, angular resolution, and background rejection than the previous generation of water-Cherenkov arrays. The improved performance allows us to discover new TeV sources, to detect …

The High-Altitude Water Cherenkov (HAWC) observatory is highly suitable for large-scale survey work. The high duty time (95%), large instantaneous FoV (2 sr), and sensitivity over the 300 GeV to more than 100 TeV energy range make it ideal for creating a catalog of very high energy (VHE) sources. Over the lifetime of the HAWC observatory, 4 catalogs have been produced 3 of which were constructed utilizing the full HAWC energy range while another used a restricted (>56 TeV) range. This talk will focus on the status of the planned 4HWC (full energy range) catalog including the newly developed …

Located in the southern field of view of the High-Altitude Water Cherenkov (HAWC) observatory, the eHWC J1825-134 region is one of the most complicated gamma-ray emission sites on the galactic plane. The region contains a few PeVatron candidates that can accelerate particles up to PeV energies. Disentangling the overlapping gamma-ray emission and associating it with accelerators is crucial to understand the mechanism of cosmic-ray acceleration and gamma-ray production near the accelerators. In this talk, I will present each of the gamma-ray sources resolved in this region using 1910 days of HAWC data, including their spectra. Also, we have studied their …

Micro quasars are one of the classes of powerful Galactic particle accelerators that emit gamma rays beyond multi-TeV energies. Recently, gamma-ray emission above tens of TeV has been detected from some of these objects. The High-Altitude Water Cherenkov (HAWC) observatory has previously reported gamma-ray emission with a median energy of 25 TeV from the micro quasar SS 433, suggesting that gamma-ray binaries can accelerate particles to above 100 TeV inside the jets. With 2,321 days of data and better reconstruction algorithms, the HAWC observatory detected emissions above 20 TeV from two other binaries, V4641 Sagittarii and LS 5039. The V4641 …

Luminescent Coupling In Perovskite Tandem Solar Cells: The Advantages Of Perovskite And Luminescent Coupling In Photovoltaics, Briana Dokken
Senior Seminars and Capstones
Multijunction or tandem solar cells are made of multiple semiconductor light absorbing layers. Having multiple absorber layers in a solar cell allows it to absorb a larger range of the solar spectrum. When electrons recombine (relax to a lower energy state) in the top layer of a tandem solar cell, they can emit luminescent photons that are absorbed by the bottom layer of the cell. This process is called luminescent coupling, and it can be used to enhance the performance of photovoltaic cells. Another strategy to increase solar cell performance is to use perovskite as the absorber layer material. Currently, …

We report an observation of ultrahigh-energy (UHE) gamma rays from the Galactic center (GC) region, using 7 yr of data collected by the High-Altitude Water Cherenkov (HAWC) Observatory. The HAWC data are best described as a point-like source (HAWC J1746-2856) with a power-law spectrum ( d N / d E = ϕ E / 26 TeV γ ), where γ = −2.88 ± 0.15stat − 0.1sys and ϕ = 1.5 x 10−15 (TeV cm2 s)−1 ± 0.3 stat − 0.13 sys + 0.08 sys extending from 6 to 114 TeV. We find no evidence of a spectral …

This book intends to provide both the fundamentals of Electromagnetics but also some practical applications of the concepts covered. Having taught electromagnetics for several years, the authors feel that many times the field of electromagnetics comes as “old” and often times students do not appreciate the concepts and their importance in everyday applications. The authors intend to accompany the EM concepts with life applications. Hence, students may see the direct impact of the knowledge they acquire through the study of the field of electromagnetics and better appreciate the field.

HESS J1809-193 is an unidentified TeV source, first detected by the High Energy Stereoscopic System (H.E.S.S.) collaboration. The emission originates in a source-rich region that includes several supernova remnants (SNRs) and pulsars including SNR G11.1+0.1, SNR G11.0-0.0, and the young radio pulsar PSR J1809-1917. Originally classified as a pulsar wind nebula candidate, recent studies show the peak of the TeV region overlapping with a system of molecular clouds. This resulted in the revision of the original leptonic scenario to look for alternate hadronic scenarios. Marked as a potential PeVatron candidate, this region has been studied extensively by H.E.S.S. due to …

The High-Altitude Water Cherenkov (HAWC) Gamma-Ray Observatory, located on the side of the Sierra Negra volcano in Mexico, has been fully operational since 2015. The HAWC collaboration has recently significantly improved their extensive air shower reconstruction algorithms, which has notably advanced the observatory performance. The energy resolution for primary gamma rays with energies below 1 TeV was improved by including a noise-suppression algorithm. Corrections have also been made to systematic errors in direction fitting related to the detector and shower plane inclinations, O ( 0 .° 1 ) biases in highly inclined showers, and enhancements to the core reconstruction. The …

Synthesis And Characterization Of A Zirconium (Zr) Thin Film On Si(100) Via Pulsed Laser Deposition, Zikrulloh Khuzhakulov
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
This study investigates the synthesis and characterization of zirconium (Zr) thin films deposited on Si(100) substrates using pulsed laser deposition (PLD). The effects of two laser wavelengths (1064 nm and 532 nm), various substrate temperatures (25 °C, 300 °C, and 500 °C), and different laser fluences (0.25, 0.5, 1.0 J/cm²) on the properties of the Zr films were examined. Results indicated that smoother films were achieved with the 1064 nm wavelength, while surface roughness increased with higher fluences. Optimal crystalline films were obtained at a substrate temperature of 300 °C for both wavelengths. X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), …

Capillary Phenomena In Flow Down Fibers: Beads, Bridges, Sheets, And Threads, Chase Tyler Gabbard

Capillary phenomena are ubiquitous in everyday life with surface tension responsible for shaping liquids and deforming slender structures on length scales smaller than the capillary length, as seen in the formation of drops from a leaky faucet and in the coalescence of wet hair, respectively. Recently, thin film flow down fibers have received significant attention for their ability to produce bead-on-fiber patterns with associated high surface area-to-volume ratios that optimize retention times in heat and mass transfer applications. The presence of a base flow gives rise to complex dynamics including absolute and convective instabilities. The parallelization of these processes through …
