The Electron-Ion Collider at BNL requires several crabbing systems that will be operating at 197 MHz and 394 MHz to compensate for the loss of luminosity due to the large crossing angle of the colliding beams. Two 197 MHz crab cavity cryomodules containing two cavities each will be installed in the Hadron Storage Ring (HSR) at the IP6 interaction region. Due to its large size compared to previously developed crabbing cavities, the 197 MHz crabbing cavity system was identified as one of the critical rf systems in the EIC. Therefore, a cavity has been designed including the ancillaries, and is …

The Electron Ion Collider (EIC), to be constructed at Brookhaven National Laboratory, will collide polarized high-energy electron beams with hadron beams, achieving luminosities of up to 1 X 1034cm−2s−1 in the center-mass energy range of 20-140 GeV. Crab cavities are employed to compensate for the geometric luminosity loss caused by a large crossing angle of 25 mrad in the interaction region. The phase noise in crab cavities will induce a significant emittance growth for the hadron beams in the Hadron Storage Ring (HSR). Various models have been utilized to study the effects of crab cavity …

Conduction-cooled SRF niobium cavities are being developed for use in compact, continuous-wave electron linear accelerators for a variety of industrial applications. A 915 MHz two-cell cavity has been designed to achieve an energy gain of 3.5 MeV. The design of the cell shape aims at minimizing the peak surface magnetic field. Field flatness is achieved by adjusting the length of the outer end half-cells. The higher-order mode analysis shows that absorbers are not required for a moderate beam current of 5 mA. One of the beam tubes has two side-ports for insertion of coaxial fundamental power couplers. The mechanical design …

We will describe spin-transparent storage rings that exhibit spin-coherence times of several hours and store a large number of particles and their use in novel applications. For example, these rings can be used to directly measure the electric dipole moment of the electron, relevant to CP violation and matter-antimatter asymmetry in the universe, and to search for dark energy and ultra-light dark matter*. These rings can also serve as a compelling platform for quantum computing. In this presentation, we will describe how spin-transparent rings can be used in conjunction with ion traps to enhance scalability and increase quantum coherence times …

Superlattice GaAs photocathodes play a crucial role as the primary source of polarized electrons in various accelerator facilities, including the Continuous Electron Beam Accelerator Facility (CEBAF) at Jefferson National Laboratory and the Electron-Ion Collider (EIC) at Brookhaven National Laboratory. To increase the quantum efficiency (QE) of GaAs/GaAsP superlattice photocathodes, a Distributed Bragg Reflector (DBR) is grown underneath using metal-organic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD). There are several challenges associated with DBR photocathodes: the resonance peak may not align with the emission threshold of around 780 nm, non-uniform doping density in the top 5 nm may significantly impact QE and spin polarization, …

The effect of radiation reaction is often negligible in inverse Compton scattering. However, in the nonlinear Compton regime, at high laser fields and high electron beam energies where electron recoil must be properly accounted for, there is experimental data which demonstrates the onset of radiation reaction * . We model the radiation reaction as a series of emissions from individual electrons with decreasing energy. This allows us to use the code we previously developed for simulating single-emission inverse Compton scattering events ** . We use the new code to simulate the experiment reported in Cole et al. 2018, and to …

Numerical Simulations Of Radiation Reaction Using Lorentz-Abraham-Dirac Formalism, E. Rogers, B. Terzic, E. Breen, E. Johnson, G. Krafft

Physics Faculty Publications

An accelerating charged particle emits electromagnetic radiation. The motion of the particle is further damped via self-interaction with its own radiation. For relativistic particles, the subsequent motion is described via a correction to the Lorentz force, known as the Lorentz-Abraham-Dirac force. The aim of this research is to use the Lorentz-Abraham-Dirac force to computationally simulate the radiation damping that occurs during nonlinear inverse Compton scattering. We build on our previous work and the code which simulates single-emission inverse Compton scattering to incorporate the effect of multiple emissions, thereby modeling the radiation reaction.

For an integral part of electron-ion collider (EIC) design, the crab crossing scheme provides a head-on collision for beams with a nonzero crossing angle. Recently we provided a framework for accurate numerical simulations of beam-beam effects with crabbing crossing dynamics. The framework was implemented in a simulation code package named “CASA BeamBeam”. We offer com-prehensive formulas for calculation of collider luminosity for various cases in the code package. The luminosity calculation module of CASA Beam-Beam now includes the hourglass effect, the beam-tilt effects and the beam offset effect. The benchmarking results show good agreement between the numerical calculation and analytic …

The longitudinal and transverse emittance growth in hadron beams due to intra-beam scattering (IBS) and other heating sources deteriorate the luminosity in a collider. Hence, a strong hadron beam cooling is required to reduce and preserve the emittance. The cooling of high energy hadron beam is challenging. We propose a dual energy storage ring-based electron cooler that uses an electron beam to extract heat away from hadron beam in the cooler ring while the electron beam is cooled by synchrotron radiation damping in the high energy damping ring. In this paper, we present a design of a dual energy storage …

Nb3Sn is a next-generation superconducting material for the accelerator cavities with higher critical temperature and superheating field, both twice compared to Nb. It promises superior performance and higher operating temperature than Nb, resulting in significant cost reduction. So far, the Sn vapor diffusion method is the most preferred and successful technique to coat niobium cavities with Nb3Sn. Although several post-coating techniques (chemical, electrochemical, mechanical) have been explored to improve the surface quality of the coated surface, an effective process has yet to be found. Since there are only a few studies on the post-coating heat treatment …

Production of high bunch charge beams for the ElectronIon Collider (EIC) is a challenging task. High bunch charge (a few nC) electron beam studies at Jefferson Lab using an inverted insulator DC high voltage photo-gun showed evidence of space charge limitations starting at 0.3 nC, limiting the maximum delivered bunch charge to 0.7 nC for beam at -225 kV, 75 ps (FWHM) pulse width, and 1.64 mm (rms) laser spot size. The low extracted charge is due to the modest longitudinal electric field (Ez) at the photocathode leading to beam loss at the anode and downstream beam pipe. To reach …

The Electron-Ion Collider requires several crabbing systems to facilitate head-on collisions between electron and proton beams in increasing the luminosity at the interaction point. One of the critical rf systems is the 197 MHz crabbing system that will be used in crabbing the proton beam. Many factors such as the low operating frequency, large transverse voltage requirement, tight longitudinal and transverse impedance thresholds, and limited beam line space makes the crabbing cavity design challenging. The rf-dipole cavity design is considered as one of the crabbing cavity options for the 197 MHz crabbing system. The cavity is designed including the HOM …

A dual energy storage ring designed for beam cooling consists of two closed rings with significantly different energies: the cooling and damping rings. These two rings are connected by an energy recovering superconducting RF structure that provides the necessary energy difference. In our design, the RF acceleration has a main linac and harmonic cavities both running at crest that at first accelerates the beam from low energy E_{L} to high energy E_{H} and then decelerates the beam from E_{H} to E_{L} in the next pass. The purpose of the harmonic cavities is to extend the bunch length in a dual …

The operating lifetime of GaAs-based photocathodes in DC high voltage electron photo-guns is dominated by the ionization rate of residual beamline gas molecules. In this work, experiments were performed to quantify the improvement in photocathode charge lifetime by biasing the photo-gun anode with a positive voltage, which repels ions generated downstream of the anode. The photo-cathode charge lifetime improved by almost a factor of two when the anode was biased compared to the usual grounded configuration. Simulations were performed using the particle tracking code General Particle Tracer (GPT) with a new custom element. The simulation results showed that both the …

The crabbing system is a key feature in the Jefferson Lab Electron-Ion Collider (JLEIC) required to increase the luminosity of the colliding bunches. A local crabbing system will be installed with superconducting rf-dipole crabbing cavities operating at 952.6 MHz. Knowledge of higher order mode multipole field effects is important for accurate beam dynamics study for the crabbing system. In this paper, we quantify the multipole components and analyse their effects on the beam dynamics.

In a dual energy storage ring, the electron beam passes through two loops at markedly different energies E_{L}, and E_{H}, i.e., energies for low energy loop and high energy loop respectively. These loops use a common beamline where a superconducting linac at first accelerates the beam from EL to EH and then decelerates the beam from EH to EL in the next pass. There are two basic solutions to the equilibrium problems possible, i.e., ’Storage Ring’ (SR) equilibrium and ’Energy Recovery Linac’ (ERL) equilibrium. Beam synchronization of the future electron-ion collider (EIC) is studied with introducing different bunch numbers in the two colliding beams. This allows non-pairwise collisions between the bunches of the two beams and is known as "gear-change", whereby one bunch of the first beam collides with all other bunches of the second beam, one at a time. Here we report on the study of how the beam dynamics of the Jefferson Lab Electron Ion collider concept is affected by the gear change. For this study, we use the new GPU-based code (GHOST). The electron and ion beams of a future Electron Ion Collider (EIC) must collide at an angle for detection, machine and engineering design reasons. To avoid associated luminosity reduction, a local crabbing scheme is used where each beam is crabbed before collision and de-crabbed after collision. The crab crossing scheme then provides a head-on collision for beams with a non-zero crossing angle. We develop a framework for accurate simulation of crabbing dynamics with beam-beam effects by combining symplectic particle tracking codes with a beam-beam model based on the Bassetti-Erskine analytic solution. We present simulation results using our implementation of such …
