Serum Iron, Total Iron-Binding Capacity, Unbound Iron-Binding Capacity, Transferrin Saturation, Serum Copper, And Hematological Parameters In Pregnant Akkaraman Ewes Infected With Gastro-Intestinal Parasites, Süleyman Kozat, Nazmi̇ Yüksek, Yaşar Göz, İhsan Keleş

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

The aim of this study was to investigate serum iron parameters, and copper and iron deficiency anemia in ewes infected with gastro-intestinal parasites. This study was conducted with 60 pregnant Akkaraman ewes. In the statistical analyses, values obtained from both parasite infected and uninfected ewes were compared. Significant decreases were observed in PCV (P < 0.05), Hb (P < 0.05), RBC (P < 0.05), total protein (P < 0.05), albumin (P < 0.05), globulin (P < 0.05), and MCHC (P < 0.01), and a significant increase was seen in the WBC value (P < 0.05) in the parasite infected group. Furthermore, the parasite infected group had lower serum Fe (P < 0.001), TS % (P < 0.001), and serum Cu (P < 0.01) levels, and had higher UIBC values (P < 0.05) compared to the values obtain from the uninfected group. Therefore, in addition to antiparasite drug treatment in parasite infected pregnant ewes, iron preparations should also be administered in order to treat iron deficiency.

This study was carried out to determine the effect of age on male Zavot cattle for slaughter and carcass characteristics. For this aim, 18 male Zavot cattle were divided equally into groups 1, 2 and 3 containing animals 6, 18 and 30 months old, respectively. The fattening period lasted 162 days and there was a 14-day adaptation period. Individual ad-libitum feeding was used during the experiment. The purpose of this study was to determine whether subconjunctival administration of enrofloxacin could ameliorate a herd outbreak of infectious bovine keratoconjunctivitis (IBK) and to compare the efficacy of this regimen with the efficacy of subconjunctival administration of a combination of penicillin+streptomycin. The calves were assigned to 1 of 3 groups at the beginning of the study, and were examined 3 times weekly for 4 weeks. \Beta-Lactoglobulin Variants In Awassi And Morkaraman Sheep And Their Association With The Composition And Rennet Clotting Time Of The Milk, Şerafetti̇n Çeli̇k, Sali̇h Özdemi̇r

In this study, \beta-lactoglobulin (\beta-Lg) variants in Awassi and Morkaraman sheep were studied using polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis, and their association with composition and rennet clotting time of the milk was estimated. Two alleles (A and B) and 3 different genotypes for \beta-Lg (AA, AB and BB) were observed in the whey from both breeds. The frequencies of \beta-Lg alleles were estimated as A 0.63 and B 0.37 in the Awassi breed, and A 0.56 and B 0.44 in the Morkaraman breed. Sixty BVDV field strains isolated from different regions of Turkey were antigenically characterised with a panel of 16 monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) specific to viral proteins E2 and NS2-3. MAb recognition patterns were detected by an indirect peroxidase-linked antibody assay and data were subjected to computer analysis for discussing herd specificity of viral strains isolated from immunotolerant, persistently infected (IPI) cattle. For that purpose, phylogenic and statistical analyses were performed. A high level of antigenic diversity was detected among the isolates. The purpose of this study was to determine the localization of Bcl-2 protein in porcine oviducts. Anti-human Bcl-2 monoclonal antibody was used to localize Bcl-2 protein immunohistochemically in the uterotubal junction (UTJ), isthmus and ampulla of pre-ovulatory (n=10) and post-ovulatory (n=10) sows. The Bcl-2 protein was detected in quantity in the intracytoplasm of the epithelial cells, some types of leukocytes in the epithelial layer and in the subepithelial connective tissue, in fibroblasts, as well as smooth muscle cells of the UTJ, isthmus and ampulla in the pre-ovulatory period. A survey on mosquito species was conducted once a month in a PRRS positive pig farm in Nakorn Pathom province from May 2004 to April 2005. The mosquito larvae were collected over an area within 1 km of the farm and adult females were captured while feeding on the pigs between 6 to 10 p.m. using oral aspirators. Out of a total of 91,840 mosquitoes, 3 genera and 6 species were identified Culex tritaeniorhynchus, Cx. gelidus, Mansonia uniformis, Ma. annulifera, Anopheles vagus and An. peditaeniatus with Culex tritaeniorhynchus (60-95.75%) predominant with Ma. annulifera found the least (0.02-0.05%). The effect of epidural ketamine was studied in 20 experimental dogs premedicated with 0.04 mg/kg atropine and 2 mg/kg xylazine, given intramuscularly along with 0.2 mg/kg acepromazine given intravenously. All dogs received, epidurally, 2 mg/kg ketamine diluted in 0.9% normal saline (NSS) in a volume of 1 ml/ 4.5 kg and, one week or more before, or later, 1 ml/ 4.5 kg NSS without ketamine as a control. Fifteen purebred (Holstein-Friesian) sires and 45 crossbred (75% up-grade Holstein-Friesian) sires from the Division of Artificial Insemination (AI), Department of Livestock Development were genotyped for the kappacasein gene by Polymerase Chain Reaction-Restriction Fragment Length Polymorphism (PCR-RFLP). The allele A, B and E were found and the allelic frequencies were 0.6, 0.33 and 0.07 in the purebred sires and 0.74, 0.17 and 0.09 in the crossbred sires. Ninety six, fourteen day-old, broiler chickens were randomly divided into four groups of 24 birds. Groups 1 and 2 were orally vaccinated with live commercial intermediate-plus and intermediate infectious bursal disease (IBD) vaccines, respectively. Groups 3 and 4 served as a positive and negative non-vaccinated controls, respectively. Blood samples were collected at 14, 28 and 38 days of age for determining IBD antibody titers by an ELISA test. The nested reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction (nested RT-PCR) was used to study the canine distemper virus (CDV) could be detected in blood samples collected after vaccination. Blood samples were collected from 16 healthy puppies from 4 different litters on days 0, 3, 7, 10, 14, 17, 21, and 24, after vaccination with an attenuated, canine distemper virus, combined vaccine(Nobivac® Puppy DP) and from 3 puppies used as non-vaccinated controls. Pubic Symphysiodesis For The Optional Treatment Of Canine Hip Dysplasia, Kanyada Mangklapruk, Kumpanart Soontornvipart, Atichat Brahmasa

Pubic symphysiodesis (PS) using a bone plate and screws was performed in 10 hip dysplastic dogs, diagnosed following clinical and radiographic evaluation. After resection of the cranial third of the pubic symphysis, the rest of the symphysis was fixed by a dynamic compression plate and screws. Animal gait, Norberg angle (NA), dorsal acetabular rim slope (DARS) and dorsal acetabular rim angle (DARA) were radiographically evaluated before, immedimtely after, and at 1 and 3 months after surgery. NA and DAR of all dogs were significantly (p<0.05) greater than the preoperative values, while DARS was less than the preoperative value. After surgery, 75% of the hip joints had no Ortolani signs, while all dogs regained normal gait within one week of the operation.

The aim of this study was to determine the effects of temperature and humidity on the conception rate of Holstein crossbred dairy cows in smallholder farms in Chiang Mai, Thailand. 7,312 pregnancy diagnosis examinations on 3,166 dairy cows in 510 herds and artificially inseminated, were collected by Chiang Mai AI Research and Biotechnology Center. The monthly average weather data, including minimum and maximum of both temperature and humidity, were obtained from the Thai Meteorological Department for the months January 2001 to December 2002. This study was performed to evaluate the use of preserved human amniotic membrane to repair corneal ulcers in 5 eyes of experimental dogs. A 0.45 centimetre, in diameter, trephine was used to create a corneal stroma wound which was later covered with human amniotic membrane and the third eyelid flap for 7 days. After one week, each dog had complete corneal epithelization. Corneal vascularization, photophobia and conjunctivitis and were observed in 1, 4 and 5 dogs, respectively. However, all dogs regained their normal vision.

Herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) is the leading cause of virus-induced encephalitis; however, the viral genes that regulate encephalitis have not been well characterized. In this study, we tested whether the LAT (latency-associated transcript) locus regulates the frequency of encephalitis in male or female mice. Male BALB/c mice are more susceptible to HSV-1-induced encephalitis than age-matched female BALB/c mice. Deletion of LAT coding sequences reduced the frequency of encephalitis. A recombinant virus containing the first 1.5 kb of the LAT coding sequence induces levels of encephalitis in male BALB/c mice similar to those induced by wild-type HSV-1.

Objectives: To investigate the relative pathogenicity of Candida albicans treated with subinhibitory concentrations of fluconazole in a mouse model of disseminated candidiasis. Previous studies indicate that these cells secrete 10 times more farnesol than do untreated cells. In our usage, subinhibitory means a concentration which causes a prominent decrease in turbidity but still allows some cell growth. Methods: C. albicans A72 cells were grown overnight in 0–5.0 mM fluconazole, washed, and inoculated in mice by tail vein injection. The latency-associated transcript (LAT) is essential for the wild-type herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) high-reactivation phenotype since LAT- mutants have a low-reactivation phenotype. We previously reported that LAT can decrease apoptosis and proposed that this activity is involved in LAT’s ability to enhance the HSV-1 reactivation phenotype. The first 20% of the primary 8.3-kb LAT transcript is sufficient for enhancing the reactivation phenotype and for decreasing apoptosis, supporting this proposal. This review aims to update information on the success of intra-uterine and deep intra-uterine insemination in the pig. Three artificial insemination (AI) techniques in pigs included conventional AI (semen is deposited intra cervically), intra-uterine insemination (IUI) and deep intra-uterine insemination (DIUI). With conventional AI, it has been shown that more than 90% of spermatozoa are lose before reaching the oviducts. Therefore, new techniques for AI were developed in order to maximize the use of boar semen and to reduce semen backflow, which can reduce pregnancy rates. Ninety 1-day-old-female broiler chickens were divided into groups as follows. Thirty birds were randomly selected to be bled from jugular vein for MG antibody assay and swabed at choanal cleft for MG DNA using PCR. One hundred and sixty eight, 5-week-old, male, layer-type chickens were divided into 7 groups, 24 birds in each. Group1 was a non-vaccinated control. Groups 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7 were vaccinated with inactivated, lentogenic strain of Newcastle disease (ND) by subcutaneous injection. All birds were challenged when 11-weeks-old. They received a local strain of virulent ND virus by the oral route. All birds were weighed when 5, 11 and 13-weeks-old. Blood samples were collected at 5, 7, 9, 11 and 13-weeks-old. An autogenous ilial graft was experimentally used for grafting the mandibles of 6 mixed-breed dogs, aged 1 to 5 years. To prepare the recipient bed, the mandibular shaft, under the fourth premolar tooth, was cut 2 cm deep and removed with the tooth. An ilial graft, the same size as the excised mandibular shaft, was harvested from the dorsal iliac crest of the same dog.
