The effect of feeding frequency on nutrient digestibility and growth performance was investigated in rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) fed a high lipid diet. The experimental diet contained 25.2% crude lipid and 40.7% crude protein. Two feeding frequencies were tested: 2 meals per day (Group I) and 6 meals per day (Group II). Fish were fed a restricted daily ration (1.5% of body weight) divided into equal meals. t the end of the experiment, the weight gain in Group I and II was 84.6% and 90.1%, respectively. This study evaluated the effects of oocyte source on in vitro maturation (IVM) and embryo developmental competence in goats by the intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) technique. Oocytes were obtained either by laparoscopic ovum pick-up (LOPU) or by slicing of abattoir ovaries. The donor does used for LOPU were superstimulated and their estrus was synchronized. Fatty Acid Profiles Of Microdiets For Marine Fish In Turkey, Mustafa Yildiz

Lipid contents and fatty acid profiles in the commercial microdiets for farming marine fish species were determined. Twenty microdiet samples were taken from marine fish farms on the Aegean region of Turkey throughout 2006-2007. Of the 20 microdiet samples, 5 were produced in Turkey and 15 were imported. The fatty acid analysis of the microdiets was made by gas-liquid chromatography using helium as the carrier gas. The lipid levels of the microdiets produced in Turkey by different companies ranged from 9.5 ± 0.05% to 11.6 ± 0.14% (P < 0.05). In contrast, the lipid levels of imported microdiets were between 10.6 ± 0.20% and 17.2 ± 0.14% (P < 0.05). n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (n-3 PUFA) levels in the microdiets ranged from 7.1 ± 0.03% to 24.8 ± 0.03% of total fatty acids (P < 0.05). Similarly, n-3 highly unsaturated fatty acid (n-3 HUFA) levels in the microdiets ranged from 6.1 ± 0.01% to 22.8 ± 0.02% of total fatty acids (P < 0.05). n-3 highly unsaturated fatty acids (n-3 HUFA) levels in the microdiets were found between 0.6 ± 0.00% and 3.6 ± 0.01% of dry weight of diets (P < 0.05). Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) levels of these microdiets were between 0.3 ± 0.00% and 2.0 ± 0.03% of the dry weight of diets (P < 0.05). Eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) levels in the dry weight of diets were between 0.3 ± 0.01% and 2.2 ± 0.01% (P < 0.05). Arachidonic acid (ArA) levels in the microdiets were also found between 0.3 ± 0.01% and 0.9 ± 0.01% of total fatty acids (P < 0.05). Total of 500 samples from triceps, gluteal and diaphragm muscles, kidney, and liver, were obtained randomly from beef carcasses of a slaughterhouse in Tabriz. We measured oxytetracycline, tetracycline, and chlortetracycline (TCs) residues by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) method. Seventy four percent of samples (380 samples) had detectable TCs residues. The mean amounts of oxytetracycline, tetracycline, and chlortetracycline residues in all samples were 52.2, 33.8, and 125.2 µg/kg, respectively. The vitamin and mineral contents of pike perch (Sander lucioperca), common carp (Cyprinus carpio), and European catfish (Silurus glanis) were determined in this study. The lowest water content (76.79 g/100 g) and the highest ash (1.17 g/100 g) and fat (3.5 g/100 g) contents were determined in common carp. The highest water (81.81 g/100 g) and lowest protein contents (17.17 g/100 g) were found in European catfish sample. A 6-month-old male Dare-Shuri foal was admitted for acute abdominal pain unresponsive to medical treatment. The foal was anxious and exhibiting signs of abdominal pain. The foal had not defecated in the previous 5 days and severe abdominal distension was present. A 3-year-old East Friesian sheep from a sheep flock that suffered from chronic copper poisoning was forwarded to the Clinic of Farm Animals in the Aristotle University. The animal had signs of a hemolytic disease indicative of chronic copper poisoning and also nervous signs. Laboratory examinations were consistent with chronic copper poisoning. This was confirmed after necropsy and liver toxicological analysis. By blood smear examination, metarubricytosis, basophilic stippling, anisocytosis, and polychromasia were found. In this study, attempts were made to determine the prevalence and intensity of Eimeria and Cryptosporidium infections in sheep and goats. To investigate the effects of supplementation of vitamin B_{12} on bovine sperm post-thaw quality, vitamin B_{12} was added at the concentrations of 1.25, 2.50, 3.75, and 5.00 mg/mL to bovine semen cryoprotective medium. The results indicated that the motility and VSL, VCL, STR, and VAP values of sperm supplemented with 2.50 mg/mL vitamin B_{12} were significantly higher than those of other concentrations (P < 0.05). No significant difference was observed for LIN and ALH values and the percentage of grade a spermatozoa between the extenders containing 2.50 mg/mL and 3.75 mg/mL vitamin B_{12} (P > 0.05). The percentages of acrosome-intact and plasma membrane-intact spermatozoa were significantly improved (P < 0.05) by supplementing with 2.50 mg/mL vitamin B_{12}. With all parameters measured, the concentration of 2.50 mg/mL vitamin B_{12} showed the best results on the quality of bovine semen in freezing-thawing. In conclusion, the addition of 2.50 mg/mL vitamin B_{12} to the extender improved the bovine frozen semen quality.

The effect of aflatoxin in the growth of hens was histopathologically analyzed. Mycotoxigenic fungi were isolated and characterized as Aspergillus flavus and Aspergillus niger. The aflatoxin was extracted from Aspergillus flavus and their impact on the growth pattern of hens was evaluated. The histopathological analysis reveals that more lesions were found in the vital organs of hens in comparison with the control chick group. This study was carried out to determine the prevalence of helminth species in horses, donkeys, and mules in the Central Black Sea region, between March 2004 and July 2005. For this purpose, 140 faecal samples were taken from horses (n = 83), donkeys (n = 31), and mules (n = 26) in Samsun, Sinop, Ordu, Amasya, and Tokat provinces. The aim of this study was to assess the effect of phosalone on the tilapia, Oreochromis mossambicus. The effect was assessed on the basis of the results of acute toxicity tests and comparison of results of haematological examination of a control and an experimental group exposed to phosalone. The 96 h LC_{50} is the basic value in the acute toxicity test and it was 0.26 mg/L for phosalone against the test fish. Ten clinically healthy, adult male dogs randomly equally divided into 2 groups (I and II) were subjected to laparoscopic sterilization and open method castration under xylazine-ketamine anesthesia. In group I laparoscopic vasectomy by cauterization and cutting of the vas deferens was performed and in group II conventional open castration by the pre-scrotal approach was done. Molecular changes associated with adaptation of human influenza A virus in embryonated chicken eggs are reported: 4 amino acid substitutions occurred in HA (G186V, S219F, V226I, V309I). These substitutions allowed binding to SAalpha2,3Gal- and SAalpha2,6Gal-containing receptors, conferred SAalpha2,3Gal specificity, and preserved antigenicity. Here, the author reports the result of protein secondary structure predictions of the adaption from its primary sequence using the NNPREDICT server. Comparing the classical HA of H3N2, the adaptation has additional helices and strands and these identified structural changes should be the explanation for the reported binding and antigenicity changes.

Nuclear Morphometry In Relation To Tumor Grade In Canine Spontaneous Cutaneous Squamous Cell Carcinomas, Radostin Simeonov

In a retrospective study on cytological specimens from 17 dogs with histologically confirmed cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma, the morphometric variables were studied and compared to tumors' nuclear grade. The morphometric parameters evaluated in this study were mean nuclear area (MNA, µm2), mean nuclear perimeter (MNP, µm), mean nuclear diameter (D mean, µm), minimum nuclear diameter (D min, µm), and maximum nuclear diameter (D max, µm). Associations between MNA, MNP, D mean, D min, and D max and tumors' grade were assessed using the ANOVA/LSD test (Statistica 6.0, StatSoft, USA) at a level of significance of P < 0.05. The result indicated an increase in the mean values of the nuclear parameters with increasing tumor grade. In the cases examined, significant differences in MNA, MNP, and D mean occurred between tumors in all grades. Besides, no significant differences in D max (between grade I-II and II-III) and D min (grade II-III) were found. In conclusion, nuclear morphometry could be used as an additional tool for differentiating nuclear grade in canine cutaneous squamous cell carcinomas.

In the present study, an ileal leiomyoma encountered in a captive zebra (Equus burchelli) was reported. A 29-year-old, female zebra was found dead in the Bursa zoo. According to the referring veterinarian the most prominent clinical signs were intermittent colic (responsive to analgesics) and constipation. At post mortem examination, abdomen was severely distended. Arthropod And Vertebrate Determinants For Horizontal Transmission Of Rickettsia Felis, Kathryn Elizabeth Reif

Rickettsia felis is a gram-negative bacterium predominantly described in the cat flea, Ctenocephalides felis. Since first described in 1990 in a commercial cat flea colony in the United States, R. felis has been detected in numerous arthropod species in 28 countries around the world. Additionally, as the etiologic agent of flea-borne rickettsiosis, R. felis can cause disease in humans, with patients presenting with clinical symptoms typical of rickettsial diseases including: fever, headache, and myalgia. Transmission of R. felis within flea colonies is predominantly via vertical (transovarial and transstadial) transmission and mechanisms of horizontal transmission are undescribed. Equine Herpesvirus-1 (EHV-1) is an important ubiquitous enzootic equine pathogen, causing significant economic losses to the horse industry. Despite extensive vaccination protocols, EHV-1 continues to be a major cause of epidemic abortion, perinatal mortality, respiratory disease and neurologic disease. EHV-1 infections are usually dealt with by using management practices that limit spread of the disease and secondary complications, providing symptomatic relief to infected horses, but no specific treatment is available. New therapeutic or virucidal agents could have great utility in slowing both the progression and spread of the disease in an epidemic situation. A number of porphyrins and their derivatives …

Bovine tuberculosis, caused by infection with Mycobacterium bovis, is a re-emerging zoonotic disease. It has staged a comeback by establishing infections in wildlife and cattle, creating the potential for human disease in locations where it was thought to be under control. In northwestern Minnesota, infected cattle and white-tailed deer were first discovered in 2005. A major bovine tuberculosis eradication campaign is underway in the state, with multiple efforts employed to control M. bovis infection in both cattle and deer populations. There are two form of Zn supplement used in commercial dog foods, organic and inorganic forms. These forms can influence Zn absorption and utilization of the animals. The goal of the current study was to evaluate the effects of zinc methionylglycinate (ZnMG) compared to zinc sulfate (ZnSO4) supplementations in commercial dog foods on haircoat characteristics, and Zn concentration in plasma, hair, and stool of the dogs. Sixty 1-day-old-female broiler chickens were divided into groups as follows. Thirty birds were randomly selected to be bled from jugular vein for Mycoplasma gallisepticum (MG) antibody assay and swabbed at yolk sac for the detection of MG DNA by using PCR. The remaining birds were divided into three groups, 10 birds per group as follows. Group 1 was a sham negative control. Estrogens are known to be an important modulator for regulation of the reproductive function in female mammals. The specific receptor of estrogens in the buffalo reproductive tract, particularly in the oviduct, has not been explored yet in the expression pattern. This study was, therefore, undertaken to investigate the localization of the estrogen receptor alpha (ERα) in the oviduct of Thai swamp buffalo at the follicular and late luteal phases of the estrous cycle. The objective of this study was to elucidate ovarian follicular dynamics in swamp buffalo cows (Bubalus bulalis) following a protocol for estrus synchronization during hot as low breeding season (March to June) and cool as high breeding season (November to February). Nine pluriparous buffalo cows received a progesterone ear implant for 10 days together with the administration of a luteolytic dose of PGF2α at the time of implant removal to start the estrus cycle. Human Chorionic Gonadotrophin was administered whenever ovulation did not occur within the first five days following implant removal.
