The present study examined the haematological effects of ichthyophthiriasis in common carp. Blood was collected from 4 groups of juvenile carp: 1. healthy; 2. with minor symptoms of ichthyophthiriasis; 3. with severe symptoms of ichthyophthiriasis (moribund); survivors of ichthyophthiriasis after a 3-week recovery period. Blood was subjected to a standard haematological procedure and the following parameters were evaluated: haematocrit (Ht), haemoglobin concentration (Hb), erythrocyte (RBC) and leukocyte (WBC) counts, mean cell volume (MCV), mean cell haemoglobin (MCH), and mean cell haemoglobin concentration (MCHC). The present study was designed to isolate Ornithobacterium rhinotracheale in broiler flocks in Iran and characterize it using biochemical, polymerase chain reaction assays, and phylogenetic analyses. A total of 150 tracheal swabs were collected from broiler chickens in slaughterhouses. Additionally, 150 lung and 150 tracheal tissue samples were taken from dead birds of broiler flocks that were developing symptoms of respiratory diseases. For PCR assay DNA was extracted from ORT isolates and also from tissue samples. ORT was isolated from 1 out of 150 swabs samples and 3 out of 300 total tissue samples. Between October 2005 and May 2006, a total of 727 badgers found dead in Wales were reported, and 550 were delivered to the Regional Laboratories of the Veterinary Laboratories Agency (VLA). Of the 459 carcasses suitable for examination, 55 were deemed to be infected with Mycobacterium bovis on the basis of culture, spoligotyping, and variable-number tandem repeat typing. Acid-fast bacteria were observed histologically in a further six badgers, but these bacteria were not confirmed as M. bovis by culture. Mycobacterium bovis infects the wildlife species badgers Meles meles who are linked with the spread of the associated disease tuberculosis (TB) in cattle. Control of livestock infections depends in part on the spatial and social structure of the wildlife host. Here we describe spatial association of M. bovis infection in a badger population using data from the first year of the Four Area Project in Ireland. Using second-order intensity functions, we show there is strong evidence of clustering of TB cases in each the four areas, i.e. a global tendency for infected cases to occur near other infected cases. The present study was undertaken to investigate cyclic changes in the structure of oviduct epithelial cells, and the content of oviductal mucus in the Angora rabbit using light and electron microscopy. Ten female Angora rabbits, 5 of which were in the estrual stage and the other 5 were in the luteal stage of the estrous cycle, were used in the study. Tissue samples taken from the fimbria, ampulla and isthmus of the oviduct were examined under light and electron microscope. The lack of reliable diagnostic methods is a setback in the effective control of diseases. Diagnosis of Trypanosoma evansi infection (surra) in livestock is of considerable economic importance. Detection of trypanosomes in blood has been the "gold standard"; however, finding the organisms or establishing patency of parasitaemia has not always been possible even in symptomatic infections. As a consequence of low dose infection, the pre-patent period in Trypanosoma evansi may be longer and, even when symptoms have developed, trypanosomes may still not be demonstrable in blood, thus delaying treatment and thereby increasing morbidity and mortality. Methadone is a mu-opioid receptor agonist which is a very effective analgesic used to treat moderate to severe acute and chronic pain in humans. Due to methadone’s minimal undesirable side-effects in people, we believed it could be of use in horses as an analgesic agent. As found with the majority of lipophilic drugs, absorption of methadone occurs primarily in the small intestine via transcellular transport and its absorption is regulated by P-glycoprotein. To compare insertion temperatures and torques of Hydroxyapatite (HA) coated and uncoated 5.5 mm AO cortical screws in equine third metatarsal bones (MTIII) in vitro, and to compare insertion and extraction torques of HA coated and uncoated screws after 4, 8, 12 and 16 weeks of healing in equine third metacarpal bones (MCIII) in vivo. No significant temperature differences were recorded in cadaveric bones for AO and HA coated screws. Insertion torques were significantly higher for HA coated implants compared to uncoated screws. This study aimed to experimentally induce Salmonella enterica subsp. enterica serovar Enteritidis (Salmonella Gallinarum) infection in turkey poults in order to detect S. Gallinarum using immunohistochemical, bacteriological, and histological procedures. The study included 90 white turkey poults that were divided into 3 groups (1-day-old, 3-week-old, and 2-month-old), each of which was orally inoculated with an inoculum of 0.3 mL of S. Countries with different herd structures and climates use different combinations of herd, year, and season to define the effect of their climatic conditions and management. Estimates of variance components and Akaike information criterion values resulting from 8 analytical models differentiated by different combinations of herd, year and season effects were compared for milk and fat yields. The aim of this study was to determine the effects of parenteral administration of L-carnitine on some biochemical parameters in Halep (Damascus) goats during the last month of pregnancy. L-carnitine was administrated to goats in group I (n = 13) by subcutaneous injections once a week during the last month of the pregnancy. Sixteen crossbred barrows (Duroc × Landrace × Yorkshire) weaned at 28 days with an initial body weight of 5.12-8.64 kg and no antibodies to PCV2 were used in a 5-week trial to evaluate the immune response after intranasal inoculation with type-2 porcine circovirus. The percentage of peripheral blood ANAE+ T cells, PCV2 antibody titer, immunoglobulins, and serum IFN-\gamma, IL-2, and sIL-2R levels were determined. The objectives of this study were to determine the prevalence of Salmonella in a population of house sparrows, which are commonly found around poultry houses, and to characterize the obtained Salmonella isolates via serotyping, multiplex polymerase chain reaction (PCR), and antibiotic resistance analysis. Samples of visceral organs (gastrointestinal tract, liver, and heart) from 470 house sparrows were subjected to culture and the results show that 18 (3.8%) were positive for Salmonella. The performance of a high-density continuous system was evaluated as an alternative to conventional low-density batch-culture systems for culturing the rotifer Brachionus plicatilis. Rotifer densities ranging from 1700 to 3760 individuals/mL were achieved in 4 different trials that lasted 10-18 days. Problems associated with NH_3-N and pH were controlled by increasing the water exchange rate and periodic addition of ammonia remover. While NH_3-N and pH values were 0-8.8 mg/L and 6.9-9.3, respectively, the most important problem was the accumulation of TSS at concentrations of up to 85 mL/L within a very short time after start-up. Conception Rates For Standing Estrus And Fixed-Time Insemination In Dairy Heifers Synchronized With Gnrh And Pgf_{2\Alpha}, Samir Z. El-Zarkouny

The objective of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of GnRH PGF-based protocols on reproductive outcome in Holstein heifers. Heifers were randomly assigned to the control group (n = 14), or treatment groups (n = 50) treated with GnRH (day -7) and PGF_{2\alpha} (day 0). Heifers that exhibited estrus were inseminated (Select Synch, n = 34) and heifers that did not exhibit estrus up to 48 h after PGF_{2\alpha} injection received a second GnRH injection and were fixed-time inseminated (Ovsynch, n = 16). Conception rates were 40%, 55.9%, and 31.3%, and overall pregnancy rates (P < 0.05) were 64.3%, 97%, and 87.5% in the control, Select Synch, and Ovsynch groups, respectively. Ovsynch heifers had 1.8 ± 0.5 and 3.2 ± 0.6 ng mL^{–1} of serum P4, versus 3.3 ± 0.5 and 3.8 ± 0.6 ng mL–1 in the Select Synch heifers at the time of the first GnRH and PGF_{2\alpha} injection, respectively. Conception rates were 55.6% and 58.3% when P4 concentrations were high, and were 50% and 25% when P4 concentrations were low at the time of the first GnRH and PGF_{2\alpha} injection, respectively. Dairy heifers synchronized with GnRH and PGF_{2\alpha} should be inseminated when estrus is observed, and heifers that do not exhibit estrus up to 48 h after PGF_{2\alpha} injection should be given a second GnRH injection and fixed-time inseminated 16-20 h later.

The effectiveness of pre-evisceration, skin-on carcass sanitation on reducing bacterial contamination of beef carcasses was tested using 3 cattle per treatment and 3 cattle as controls at each of 3 abattoirs in southern Wisconsin. The sanitation procedure included stunning, bleeding, tying off the esophagus, sealing the anus, and then sanitizing the hide with: i) 20% trisodium phosphate, ii) 200 ppm iodophor, iii) 75% ethanol, or iv) hot water (ca. 80 °C). A relationship between oxidative stress, and apoptosis and/or death has been suggested for many years. The objective of this study was to determine the influence of all-trans retinoic acid (ATRA) on the cell survival rate and the antioxidant defense system. MARC-145 cells were treated with ATRA after infection with porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV). The cell survival rate, total antioxidant capability (T-AOC), glutathione peroxidase (GSH-P_X) activity, superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity, lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) activity, and glutathione (GSH) content were determined in samples collected from cells incubated with ATRA for 24 or 48 h. Unilateral ovariectomies were performed on 7 mares under inhalation anesthesia for treatment of ovarian tumors. All mares were evaluated for a 2-year history of infertility; 6 mares showed persistent anestrus while 1 mare showed persistent estrus. The presumptive clinical diagnosis of the tumors was made by rectal palpation and ultrasonographic imaging of the ovaries. The affected ovaries were large, spherical, and hard, and the contralateral ovaries were small and inactive. The flank approach technique was used for all of the mares. The maedi-visna virus (MVV) is distributed worldwide and, to date, no epidemiological surveys have been carried out using ELISA testing in Turkey. The aims of this study were as follows: i) to verify the diagnostic performance of a home-made ELISA test (HM-ELISA) using Turkish ovine sera in comparison with other commercially available ELISA tests, and ii) to perform a preliminary epidemiological survey in İstanbul province. A crossbred Jersey cow had been suffering from severe pain for 3 days due to a corneal foreign body. Tranquilization using intravenous triflupromazine (20 mg) followed by Peterson nerve block with 2% lidocaine hydrochloride (13 mL) facilitated examination of the eye and removal of a 12-mm-long (7 mm penetrated plus 5 mm protruding out) dry plant awn from the cornea. This preliminary report describes the occurrence of acute pulmonary emphysema cum pulmonary edema ensuing in extensive subcutaneous emphysematous swellings in a dairy buffalo (Bubalus bubalis) apparently associated with a sudden shift from berseem (Trifolium alexendrinum) to Brassica juncea fodder. Tachypnea, expiratory dyspnea, open-mouth breathing, loud expiratory grunt with abdominal lift, and crackles in ventral aspects of the lungs with normal rectal temperature characterized the condition clinically. A substantial improvement was noted 3 h after treatment with parenteral administration of prednisolone plus dexamethasone, diclofenac sodium, and furosemide. Nasal Squamous Cell Carcinoma In A Cow, Ali Baniadam, Navid Moezzi, Babak Mohammadian

A patient with a turgid, hemorrhagic mass infected by myiasis in the left nostril and diagnosed as squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is presented. Complete blood count (CBC) showed moderate neutrophilia and eosinophilia and vital signs were in normal range. After aseptic surgical preparations and local anesthesia, the mass removed en bloc and submitted to the Department of Veterinary Pathology for histopathological evaluation. SCC was recognized microscopically by identifying malignant epithelial cells demonstrating various degrees of differentiation towards keratinocytes.

Primary Vaginal Fibroleiomyosarcoma In A 4-Year-Old Holstein-Friesian Cow, Hamdi̇ Avci, Güneş Seri̇n, Ahmet Aydoğan, Serap Bi̇ri̇nci̇oğlu

A case of fibroleiomyosarcoma of the vagina in a 4-year-old Holstein-Friesian cow is described. The tumour was 6.5 × 5 × 4.2 cm in size, weighed 87.73 g, and had a solid appearance. Histologically, the tumour was composed of smooth muscle and fibrous tissue components with spindle-shaped cells with eosinophilic fibrillary cytoplasm. Immunohistochemically, the tumour cells reacted with antibodies to \alpha-SMA, desmin, and vimentin but not with antibodies to CD34, CD68, and S-100 protein. Both histologically and immunohistochemically it showed the features of a fibroleiomyosarcoma.
