This study was to investigate the virulence and pathogenicity of Thai isolated Mycoplasma gallisepticum (MG)inoculated into embryonated eggs and the chance of virulence study in embryonated eggs instead of experimentalchickens. One hundred and twenty eight-day-old embryonated eggs were divided into 4 groups as follows. The present study was undertaken to determine the influence of sperm:oocyte ratio at fertilization in vitrousing frozen boar semen on fertilization rates and subsequent embryo development and quality in pig. Cumulusoocytecomplexes (COCs) were collected from porcine ovaries and then matured in vitro. After 44 hours of culture,matured oocytes were fertilized for 6 hours with three different sperm:oocyte ratios (1000:1, 2000:1, and 4000:1).Presumptive zygotes were fixed at 18-20 hours post-fertilization and then examined for sperm penetration andmonospermy rates. Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) are multipotent cells that have characteristics of self-renewal anddifferentiation into various specific cell types, in particular mesodermal lineages. This study aimed at isolating,identifying and examining the differentiation capability of canine MSCs. Bone marrow aspirates were obtained from4 dogs. Putative MSCs were then cultured in MSC medium and subpassaged. At the 3rd to 5th passages, MSCs wereexamined for their morphology and doubling time. Bartonella hensalae is a causative agent of cat scratch disease that has serious zoonotic potential for people.The aim of the present study is to examine seroprevalence of antibodies against B. hensalae in cats and dogs along thenorthern borders of Thailand in Chiangrai, Maehongson and Nan provinces using the indirect fluorescent antibodytest (IFA). A total of 169 serum samples derived from 56 cats and 113 dogs were collected from 3 provinces along thenorthern borders of Thailand. Trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) culture in Mexico experiences sporadic and significant fish mortalities, wheredisease signs are associated with infectious pancreatic necrosis virus disease (IPNV). The purpose of the present workwas to support the potential of ELISA, histopathology, and RT-PCR as routine techniques for IPNV detection.Fourteen trout farms were monitored after a disease outbreak. Positive results were confirmed in different collectedorganisms from 21% of tested farms by all 3 techniques. Equine herpesvirus-1 (EHV-1) infection remains a significant problem despite the widespread use of vaccines. The inability to generate a protective immune response to EHV-1 vaccination or infection is thought to be due to immunomodulatory properties of the virus, and the ORF1 and ORF2 gene products have been hypothesized as potential candidates with immunoregulatory properties. A pony infection study was performed to define immune responses to EHV-1, and to determine if an EHV-1 ORF1/2 deletion mutant (ΔORF1/2) would have different disease and immunoregulatory effects compared to wild type EHV-1 (WT). The Standards for Reporting of Diagnostic Accuracy (STARD) statement was developed to encourage complete and transparent reporting of key elements of test accuracy studies in human medicine. The statement was motivated by widespread evidence of bias in test accuracy studies and the finding that incomplete or absent reporting of items in the STARD checklist was associated with overly optimistic estimates of test performance characteristics. In 2009, Mycobacterium bovis infection was detected in a herd of 60 elk (Cervus elaphus) and 50 fallow deer (Dama dama) in Nebraska, USA. Upon depopulation of the herd, the prevalence of bovine tuberculosis (TB) was estimated at ∼71–75%, based upon histopathology and culture results. Particularly with elk, gross lesions were often severe and extensive. One year ago, the majority of the elk had been tested for TB by single cervical test (SCT), and all were negative. After initial detection of a tuberculous elk in this herd, 42 of the 59 elk were tested by SCT. …

The presence or absence of the biting midge Culicoides sonorensis Wirth & Jones (Diptera: Ceratopogonidae), a primary vector of bluetongue viruses (genus Orbivirus, family Reoviridae, BTV) in North America, was assessed on ranches and farms across the Northern Great Plains region of the United States, specifically Nebraska, South Dakota, and North Dakota, as part of a 2-yr regional study of BTV exposure among cattle. The effect of ejaculation frequency on spermatozoa survival in diluted Pleven Blackhead ram semen was investigated. Thirty-two ejaculates were examined. From each ram 4 ejaculates were collected at 10-min intervals in the morning and in the afternoon. Semen parameters, namely, color, density, transparency, volume, concentration, motility, and abnormal sperm, for each ejaculate were determined. A variety of taxa have been observed to· prey upon Pituophis catenifer, including mammals, birds-of prey, and other snakes. Here, we describe an unusual two-day observation of predation on a mature Great Basin gophersnake by a brown trout (Salmo trutta).

The observation took place in Jones Canyon, Utah, USA, on the grounds of the Jones Hole National Fish Hatchery (JHNFH). The 15-kDa selenoprotein (Sep15) is a thioredoxin-like, endoplasmic reticulum-resident protein involved in the quality control of glycoprotein folding through its interaction with UDP-glucose:glycoprotein glucosyltransferase. Expression of Sep15 is regulated by dietary selenium and the unfolded protein response, but its specific function is not known. In this study, we developed and characterized Sep15 KO mice by targeted removal of exon 2 of the Sep15 gene coding for the cysteinerich UDP-glucose:glycoprotein glucosyltransferase-binding domain. These KO mice synthesized a mutant mRNA, but the shortened protein product could be detected neither in tissues nor in Sep15 KO embryonic fibroblasts. Sep15 KO mice were viable …

Improvement Studies On Mutton Sheep For Marmara Region Conditions: I. Fertility, Lamb Survival, And Growth Traits Of Lambs, Ayhan Ceyhan, Tamer Sezenler, İsmai̇l Erdoğan, Osman Torun

The present study was conducted to compare the fertility of ewes, the survival rates, and the growth performance of lambs that were crossbred by mating German Black-Headed Mutton (GBM) rams with Kıvırcık ewes. The average lambing rates of the GBM × K(F1), Bandırma-I and Bandırma-II genotype, and Kıvırcık ewes were 80.00%, 75.73%, 76.78%, and 83.72%, respectively. The differences in lambing rates between the genotypes were significant (P < 0.01). The genotypes had a significant effect on litter size at birth, but not on fecundity. The differences in lambs' survival rates between the genotypes were significant (P < 0.05). The birth weight (BW), weaning weight (WW), and yearling live weight (YLW) of the lambs were 3.77 kg, 34.11 kg, and 43.71 kg for the GBM × K (F1); 3.74 kg, 32.98 kg, and 44.91 kg for the Bandırma-I; 3.73 kg, 33.18 kg, and 45.71 kg for the Bandırma-II; and 3.45 kg, 30.92 kg, and 42.22 kg for the Kıvırcık lambs. The results of this study showed that crossbreeding between the GBM and Kıvırcık breed did not significantly increase lamb production. However, crossbred lambs did not have significant survival problems when compared to native Kıvırcık lambs and had higher growth performance than purebred Kıvırcık lambs.

To evaluate the potential probiotic effect of B. coagulans and B. subtilis strains toward Artemia cultured in different gnotobiotic conditions, antibacterial and adherence assays were investigated and challenge tests with Artemia larvae were performed. Virulent V. alginolyticus (IFL), isolated from infected fish, was tested for comparative purposes. The bacterial strains B. coagulans and B. subtilis produced antimicrobial activity against the pathogenic Vibrio species, including V. alginolyticus isolated from infected fish, and inhibitory zones that ranged from 12 to 20 mm in diameter. This study presents a molecular analysis of 3 important human and animal serovars of Salmonella: Typhimurium, Enteritidis, and Abortusovis. We also provide information that can be applied in the surveillance of salmonellosis. Over the course of 3 decades, 90 isolates were collected, with 30 isolates representing each type of serovar. In addition to conventional serotyping, serovars were confirmed by polymerase chain reaction (multiplex PCR and IS200 PCR). Imidocarb [N,N'-bis[3-(4,5-dihydro-1H-imidazol-2-yl)phenyl]urea, C₁₉H₂₀N₆O₁, m.w. 348.41] is a symmetrical carbanilide derivative used to treat disease caused by protozoans of the Babesia genus. Imidocarb, however, is also considered capable of suppressing Babesia-specific immune responses, allowing Babesia-positive horses to pass a complement fixation test (CFT) without eliminating the infection. Umbilical hernias in goats are uncommon and can vary in their etiology and management. Hernioplasty can be done by closing the abdominal wall with a horizontal mattress pattern using absorbable sutures. However, larger defects (hernial ring size >3 cm) generally require the use of prosthetic materials that allow for a tension-free repair. In this study, 10 young female goats with umbilical hernias and hernial ring sizes ranging from 7-10 cm in width were treated using a double-layer polypropylene mesh. An ultrasonographic examination was performed to assess healing and connective tissue production.

DNA vaccines in larger animals, such as horses, are generally less effective and elicit significantly weaker immune responses, than in small animal model systems. To provide optimal protection against pathogenic microorganisms, the induction of both humoral and cellular immune responses from DNA vaccination may be necessary. Objective -To compare the compression produced in reduction of experimentally created medial condylar fractures using lag screw fixation with medial vs. lateral approach, and to determine the maximum torque at screw failure. Materials and Methods- Twelve (12) pairs (left and right) 3rd metacarpal bones (MC3) were collected from adult (2-7 years) Thoroughbreds euthanized for reasons unrelated to orthopedic disease.
