In older patients, it is important to minimise anaesthesia-related deaths and complications. In this study, 2 separate anaesthesia inductions were evaluated with respect to their effects on heart rate, respiratory rate, pulse oximetry data, intraocular pressure, and body temperature. A total of 22 dogs were evaluated and 2 separate anaesthesia groups were formed. Propofol (6 mg/kg) was administered to group G1 via a slow intravenous (IV) injection. In group G2, diazepam (0.5 mg/kg) was first administered via an IV injection, followed immediately by alfentanil (40 µg/kg), administered via a slow IV route. Each parameter was recorded prior to anaesthesia (T_0), …
Factors Affecting Colostrum Quality Of Ewes And Immunostimulation, Özge Yilmaz, Güven Kaşikçi
Factors Affecting Colostrum Quality Of Ewes And Immunostimulation, Özge Yilmaz, Güven Kaşikçi
Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
Maternal antibodies play a major role in the development of the immune system of a young animal. Ideally, the transmission of maternal immunity to the foetus occurs in the uterus. However, in ruminants, as there is no maternal antibody transfer from the mother to her young by way of the uterus, the antibodies present in the colostrum are a vital necessity for newborn ruminants. After birth, an unhealthy neonatal period for the young animal and an unhealthy puerperal period for the mother can cause significant financial losses. In animal husbandry, due to the budget allocated for the treatment of diseases …

Acute Toxicity Of Diazinon And Its Effects On Hematological Parameters In The Indian Carp, Cirrhinus Mrigala (Hamilton), Abdul Rauf, Naeemuddin Arain
Acute Toxicity Of Diazinon And Its Effects On Hematological Parameters In The Indian Carp, Cirrhinus Mrigala (Hamilton), Abdul Rauf, Naeemuddin Arain
Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
Diazinon is a commonly used pesticide and its existence in the fresh water reservoirs of Pakistan has been reported by some authors. A semistatic experiment was conducted to find out the acute toxicity of diazinon as an aquatic pollutant on some hematological parameters of Indian carp (Cirrhinus mrigala). The 1, 24, 48, 72, and 96 h LC50 values of diazinon for Indian carp were estimated as 17.32 mg/L, 15.39 mg/L, 12.64 mg/L, 10.98 mg/L, and 8.15 mg/L respectively. A significant increase in the number of dead fish was observed as the concentration of diazinon and exposure time increased (P < 0.05). The results after acute exposure to 8.15 mg/L of diazinon for 96 h showed that compared to the control fish, the total erythrocytes, leukocytes, hemoglobin, and hematocrit values decreased significantly (P < 0.05) in exposed fish. The mean corpuscular volume and mean corpuscular hemoglobin increased significantly (P < 0.05), while the mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration of both groups remained unchanged during the study. In conclusion, acute exposure to LC50 values of diazinon induced hematological alterations in Indian carp and offers a tool to evaluate toxicity derived alterations.

Interferon Inducible Protein Ifi35 Negatively Regulates Rig-I Antiviral Signaling And Supports Vesicular Stomatitis Virus Replication, Anshuman Das, Phat X. Dinh, Debasis Panda, Asit K. Pattnaik
School of Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences: Faculty Publications
In a genome-wide siRNA screen, we recently identified the interferon (IFN) inducible protein 35 (IFI35, also known as IFP35) as a factor required for VSV infection. Studies reported here were conducted to further understand the role and requirement of IFI35 in VSV infection. Consistent with the siRNA screening data, we found that depletion of IFI35 led to reduced VSV replication at the level of viral gene expression. Although no direct interaction of IFI35 with the viral replication machinery was observed, we found that IFI35 negatively regulated the host innate immune response and rescued poly(I:C)-induced inhibition of VSV replication. Promoter-driven reporter …

School of Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences: Faculty Publications
Infectious myonecrosis virus (IMNV) is a significant and emerging pathogen that has a tremendous impact on the culture of the Pacific white shrimp Litopenaeus vannamei. IMNV first emerged in Brazil in 2002 and subsequently spread to Indonesia, causing large economic losses in both countries. No existing therapeutic treatments or effective interventions currently exist for IMNV. RNA interference (RNAi) is an effective technique for preventing viral disease in shrimp. Here, we describe the efficacy of a double-stranded RNA (dsRNA) applied as an antiviral therapeutic following virus challenge. The antiviral molecule is an optimized dsRNA construct that targets an IMNV sequence …
Bovine Herpes Virus 1 (Bhv-1) And Herpes Simplex Virus Type 1 (Hsv-1) Promote Survival Of Latently Infected Sensory Neurons, In Part By Inhibiting Apoptosis, Clinton Jones
School of Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences: Faculty Publications
α-Herpesvirinae subfamily members, including herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) and bovine herpes virus 1 (BHV-1), initiate infection in mucosal surfaces. BHV-1 and HSV-1 enter sensory neurons by cell-cell spread where a burst of viral gene expression occurs. When compared to non-neuronal cells, viral gene expression is quickly extinguished in sensory neurons resulting in neuronal survival and latency. The HSV-1 latency associated transcript (LAT), which is abundantly expressed in latently infected neurons, inhibits apoptosis, viral transcription, and productive infection, and directly or indirectly enhances reactivation from latency in small animal models. Three anti-apoptosis genes can be substituted for LAT, which …

Gastroscopic Evaluation Of Gastric Ulcer Syndrome In Sport Horses With Poor Performance, Mehmet Alper Çeti̇nkaya, Alper Demi̇rutku, Mahi̇r Kaya
Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
Gastric ulceration is common in performance horses. More than 90% of thoroughbred horses in the training season and approximately 60% of racing horses from other disciplines have gastric ulcers. Excessive secretion of gastric acid, impairment of gastric mucosal blood flow, weakening of prostaglandin E or the gastric mucus/bicarbonate layer, and gastric emptying disorders are important factors in the onset of ulceration. In this study, 12 horses with poor performance were evaluated using gastroscopy following clinical examinations. Gastroscopy revealed ulceration in 5 horses and ulcerative lesions in 7. A daily dose of 4 mg/kg omeprazole was administered orally for 4 weeks …
Optimization Of Feline Adipose-Derived Multipotent Stromal Cell Isolation And Canine Cranial Cruciate Ligament Regeneration With Intra-Articular Adipose-Derived Multipotent Stromal Cells, Nan Zhang
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Adult multipotent stromal cells (MSCs) have become popular within veterinary sciences for direct administration and tissue regeneration due to their differentiation, trophic and immunosuppressive properties. However, current isolation and expansion techniques provide a heterogeneous population with other types of cells, which may affect the efficiency and efficacy of treatments. The progenitor properties and function need to be further evaluated in vitro prior to in vivo application. The first part of this dissertation was to identify the optimal MSC source for general canine orthopedic applications such as intra-articular injection and joint tissue regeneration. Based on side-by-side comparisons of cell doublings, colony …

Equine Protozoal Myeloencephalitis: Investigation Of Genetic Susceptibility And Assessment Of An Equine Infection Method, Breanna M. Gaubatz
Theses and Dissertations--Veterinary Science
Equine protozoal myeloencephalitis (EPM) is a progressive neurological disease of horses caused by Sarcocystis neurona. Two projects were conducted to identify factors involved in the development of EPM. The first study explored a possible genetic susceptibility to EPM by attempting a genome-wide association study (GWAS) on formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded (FFPE) tissue from 24 definitively-positive EPM horses. DNA extracted from tissues older than 14 months was inadequate for SNP analysis on the Illumina Equine SNP50 BeadChip probably due to degradation and formalin cross-linking. Results were inconclusive as analysis was not possible with the small sample set. The second study evaluated an …
Determination Of Farm-Specific Lawsonia Intracellularis Seroprevalence In Central Kentucky Thoroughbreds And The Identification Of Factors Contributing To Equine Proliferative Enteropathy, Allen E. Page
Theses and Dissertations--Veterinary Science
Lawsonia intracellularis and the disease it causes in horses, equine proliferative enteropathy (EPE), is an emerging pathogen of increasing importance to the horse industry from both an economic and welfare standpoint. Long recognized as an economically important disease of swine, the hallmark of EPE is a protein-losing enteropathy, where affected horses suffer weight loss and some ultimately succumb to the disease despite aggressive treatment. There are currently no known EPE preventative measures and the epidemiology of the disease remains poorly defined. While EPE is a sporadic disease affecting less than 25% of exposed horses, some farms experience clinical cases year …
Chondrodysplasia-Like Dwarfism In The Miniature Horse, John E. Eberth
Chondrodysplasia-Like Dwarfism In The Miniature Horse, John E. Eberth
Theses and Dissertations--Veterinary Science
Dwarfism is considered one of the most recognized congenital defects of animals and humans and can be hereditary or sporadic in cause and expression. There are two general morphologic categories within this vastly diverse disease. These categories are disproportionate and proportionate dwarfism and within each of these there are numerous phenotypes which have been extensively described in humans, and to a lesser extent in dogs, cattle, mice, chickens, and other domestic species. Ponies and Miniature horses largely differ from full size horses only by their stature. Ponies are often defined as those whose height is not greater than 14.2 hands; …
Signal Transduction And Rickettsial Infection Of Tick Cells, Natthida Petchampai
Signal Transduction And Rickettsial Infection Of Tick Cells, Natthida Petchampai
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Spotted fever group (SFG) Rickettsia are obligate intracellular bacteria that are carried by ticks. One such tick, Dermacentor variabilis is a vector for the etiologic agent of Rocky Mountain spotted fever, R. rickettsii. These ticks also carry a non-pathogenic R. montanensis, the agent used in this study. Interestingly, field data collected from infected D. variabilis throughout the United States revealed that the majority of Rickettsia in ticks are non-pathogenic species such as R. montanensis. Although ticks serve as both vector and reservoir hosts for SFG Rickettsia, many questions regarding tick-Rickettsia interaction remain unresolved. Therefore, the overall goal of this research …
Computed Tomographic Assessment Of Canine Arytenoid Lateralization, James Richard Wignall
Computed Tomographic Assessment Of Canine Arytenoid Lateralization, James Richard Wignall
LSU Master's Theses
Unilateral arytenoid lateralization is a commonly performed surgical treatment for laryngeal paralysis in dogs. It involves fixing the moveable arytenoid cartilage to the thyroid (TAL) or cricoid (CAL) cartilage or both (CTAL). This increases the area of the rima glottidis (RGA), to allow reduced airway pressure and laryngeal resistance in vitro and ameliorates clinical signs in vivo. It may also increase the patient’s predisposition for aspiration pneumonia, which occurs in around 20% of clinical patients. No surgical technique has been correlated with clinical outcome or risk of aspiration pneumonia. Objective analysis of the effects of surgery on the three dimensional …

Copper Oxide Wire Particles Used To Control Haemonchus Infections : Efficacy In Giraffe (Giraffa Camelopardalis) At Busch Gardens Tampa And Potential Mechanism Of Action, Allyson Kinney Moscona
LSU Master's Theses
Gastrointestinal nematode (GIN) infections affect production systems and exotic hoofstock in zoos, particularly giraffe (Giraffa camelopardalis). Anthelmintic resistance (AR) prevalence is increasing in production systems and zoos. To combat the AR that compounds GIN problems, alternative control methods are used. One such alternative is copper oxide wire particles (COWP), which control the abomasal nematode Haemonchus contortus. COWP was given to seven adult giraffe at Busch Gardens Tampa, at descending dosages: 25 g, 12.5 g, 6.3 g. Treatment administration time was determined by fecal egg count (FEC) being above 600 eggs per gram (EPG), and therefore varied with each animal. FEC …

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
Phenotypic evaluation and the culling of candidate animals for traits by applying traditional animal breeding are usually costly tasks, which need to be carried out over a considerable span of time. The use of molecular genetics as an alternative method enables animal breeders to select eligible animals for the desirable trait, or traits, at earlier ages. Selection based upon markers could result in increased accuracy as well as a better selection response of animals. The Booroola gene has long been recognized as a candidate gene responsible for a higher rate of ewe ovulation, which results in increased litter size. In …

Effects Of Essential Oil Compounds On Survival Of Listeria Monocytogenes And Escherichia Coli O157:H7 In Çiğ Köfte, Abdullah Di̇ki̇ci̇, Osman İrfan İlhak, Mehmet Çalicioğlu
Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
This study was undertaken to evaluate the effects of some essential oil compounds for the inactivation of Listeria monocytogenes and Escherichia coli O157:H7 in çiğ köfte. In experiment 1, a çiğ köfte batch was inoculated with high levels of E. coli O157:H7 or L. monocytogenes (7.00 log_{10} cfu/g) and the batches were divided into 6 groups. Each group was treated with 18 mL/kg of normal saline, cineole, limonene, carvone, linalool, or eugenol. Treatment with carvone, linalool, and eugenol resulted in a significant (P < 0.05) decrease in the numbers of both pathogens. In experiment 2, the çiğ köfte was inoculated with the same pathogens and each group was treated with 0 (control), 20, 22.5, and 25 mL/kg of eugenol. Increases in concentration did not cause a difference in pathogen reduction. The results showed that eugenol, carvone, and linalool can be used for the inactivation of E. coli O157:H7 and L. monocytogenes in çiğ köfte or similar foods.

Endometritis In Simmental Cows: Incidence, Causes, And Therapy Options, Robert Zobel
Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
The objectives of this study were to evaluate endometritis incidence and possible causes, and to assess the different therapy options. From a total of 1300 cows, endometritis was diagnosed in 23.07%, with clinical endometritis in 15.31% and subclinical endometritis in 7.77%. Previous dystocia resulted in 40.59% of the clinical endometritis and 47.52% of the subclinical endometritis (P < 0.05). Placental retention caused clinical and subclinical endometritis in 43.18% and 37.50% of the cows, respectively (P < 0.05). Body condition score 2 resulted in the highest endometritis rate and body condition score 3-4 resulted in the lowest endometritis rate (P < 0.05). Corpus luteum was found in 9.67% of the cows suffering from endometritis, while the rest developed various types of subfertility (P < 0.05). Three groups of cows (A, B, and C) with an almost equal number of clinical and subclinical endometritis diagnoses were formed. All of the groups received prostaglandin analogues (PGF Veyx Forte®, Veyx Pharma) intramuscularly 3 times at 11 day intervals. In group A, only prostaglandins were used; in group B, cephapirin (Metricure®, Intervet Schering-Plough) was administered into the corpus uteri simultaneously with the first 2 doses of prostaglandins; and in group C, the first 2 doses of prostaglandins were followed by the ozone product Riger Spray (Novagen, Italy) applied into the uterus. The criteria applied for the therapy success were the number of cows conceived after the first artificial insemination and the number of days open. The best therapy results were achieved in groups C and B (P < 0.05), with the advantage of no milk and meat withdrawing period in the animals of group C.

Effects Of Ram Presence During Synchronization Period And Previous Experience On Certain Estrus Parameters And Sexual Behaviors In Kıvırcık Ewes, Eli̇f Ergül Eki̇z, Bülent Eki̇z, Ömür Koçak
Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
This study aimed to investigate the effects of ram presence during estrus synchronization protocol and previous sexual experience on estrus onset, estrus duration, and sexual behaviors in Kıvırcık ewes. The ewes were divided into 2 groups according to the presence or absence of rams during the synchronization protocol. Ewes in each group were also divided into 3 subgroups according to their previous sexual experience. Ram presence during synchronization protocol did not affect estrus onset, estrus duration, mean attractivity, mean proceptivity, and mean receptivity. Nonexperienced ewes had longer estrus onset and shorter estrus duration than experienced ewes. Experienced ewes were more …
