F?or exploring Brucella melitensis survival in in vivo predilection sites and the relationship between bacterial loads and the detection of antibody titers in experimentally subcutaneously infected sheep with B.1397645907melitensis 16M, ten rams and ten ewes were used. One ram and one ewe were euthanized at 7, 15, 30, 60, 90, 120, and 180 days post inoculation (dpi). Bacteriological results showed that tissue isolation rates and bacterial loads peaked from 7 dpi to 30 dpi and then cleared until 120 dpi. The aim of this study was to determine the efficacy of inactive Rhodococcus equi vaccine candidates included that bacterin+aluminum hydroxide (Al(OH)3), bacterin+VapA+(Al(OH)3), bacterin+Montanide IMS 3012 (IMS), bacterin+VapA+IMS, and live vaccine using mice as a model. Virus-like particles (VLPs) produced by recombinant expression of the major viral structural proteins could be an attractive method for transmissible gastroenteritis virus (TGEV) assembly and release. In this study, the M gene, sM gene, and N gene of TGEV were inserted into donor plasmid pFastBac Dual. Those recombinant donor plasmids were transformed into E.coli DH10Bac respectively. Recombinant baculoviruses were obtained by transfection of the Sf9 cells with Bacmid-M, Bacmid-sM, and Bacmid-N. The aim of this study was to investigate the presence of Flavobacterium psychrophilum and to examine the in vitro and in vivo efficacy of enrofloxacin (ENR), doxycycline (DOX), and florfenicol (FFC) treatment in rainbow trout fry (Oncorhynchus mykiss Walbaum) against F. Psychrophilum. A total of 220 naturally infected rainbow trout fry were examined and 26 bacterial isolates were phenotypically and genotypically identified. The scope of this study was to investigate the concentrations of certain heavy metals, mineral levels, and antioxidative metabolism in cows raised near (300 m) and away from highways (2.5 km) in Çankırı Province. For this purpose, blood samples were collected from 100 cows (aged 3-5 years) raised near and away from highways in this province. This study aimed to investigate Y chromosomal haplotypes in the main Tunisian sheep breeds. For this purpose, we sequenced 2 regions of SRY (549-bp and 598-bp fragments) and 1 region in each of the AMELY and DBY genes in Barbarin, Western Thin Tail, Sicilo Sarde, and Black Thibar breeds. In addition, we analyzed the diversity at the SRYM18 microsatellite locus and detected 4 alleles of 139, 141, 143, and 145 bp. The effects of supplementing broilers' diets with fermented cottonseed meal (FCSM) on the broilers' performance, apparent digestibility, carcass traits, and meat composition were studied. A total of 180 yellow-feathered chickens of 21 days old were randomly divided into three groups (six replicates of 10 broilers each): 1) a control group (Con), 2) a treatment group of FCSM by Candida tropicalis (Ct), and 3) a treatment group of FCSM by C. Tropicalis plus Saccharomyces cerevisiae (Ct-Sc). The aim of this study was to determine concentrations of manganese (Mn), iron (Fe), and strontium (Sr) in the cartilage, compact bone, spongy bone, and cartilage with adjacent compact bone of the domestic dog (Canis lupus familiaris). The experiment was carried out on bones from the hip joints of 24 dogs (dogs of 8 years) from northwestern Poland. The concentrations of Mn, Fe, and Sr were assessed by atomic absorption spectrophotometry. Fe concentration was the highest in the cartilage and compact bone. Twenty-four male lambs (24.93 ± 0.93 kg) were used in order to evaluate the effects of chromium methionine (Cr) supplementation in high-energy finishing diets on the carcass characteristics and chemical composition of the longissimus muscle (LM). Treatments were 0.00, 0.60, 1.20, and 1.80 mg Cr/lamb daily. The experiment lasted 56 days. There were no effects of treatments on dry matter intake, feed to gain ratio, and final weight, which averaged 35.24 ± 1.01 kg. Supplemental Cr linearly decreased fat thickness enough to improve the estimated yield grade from 1.82 to 1.42 with no effect on the other carcass traits measured. …

This study was conducted to determine the effects of different macromolecule sources added to synthetic oviduct fluid (SOF) culture medium supplemented with growth factors on the development of bovine embryos and blastocyst morphology. Zygotes were distributed into 5 treatment groups. Cleavage, morula, and blastocyst rates were evaluated under a stereomicroscope. The aim of this study was to check effectiveness of drug-eluting stents for prevention of restenosis resulting from neointimal hyperplasia. Twenty-one sirolimus-eluting stents (SESs) and bare metal stents (BMSs; control) were compared by implantation into left and right balloon-injured external iliac arteries of New Zealand White rabbits, respectively. Impact Of B. Melitensis Rev-1 Vaccination On Brucellosis Prevalence, Adosinda Maria Coelho, Maria De Lurdes Pinto, Juan Garcia Diez, Ana Claudia Coelho

Trás-os-Montes e Alto Douro, in the northeastern region of Portugal, previously exhibited the highest brucellosis prevalence in the entire small ruminant population of Portugal. Consequently, a vaccination program of the whole population with Brucella melitensis Rev-1 was carried out from 2001 to 2004, and further compulsory Rev-1 vaccination of 3- to 6-month-old lambs and kids was carried out between 2005 and 2007. The prevalence of brucellosis decreased by 71.42% in 2004, with a 2-fold decrease occurring from 2005 to 2007. The reduction of brucellosis prevalence was statistically significant (P < 0.001) according to flock size. By species, brucellosis prevalence decreased 14.5-fold in sheep and 5.5-fold in goats in 2004. Regarding flock constitution, it decreased by 77% for pure flocks and 73% in mixed flocks in 2004. Regarding the animals involved in production, brucellosis prevalence decreased during the 7-year period. It was concluded that Rev-1 vaccination of the whole population was effective in decreasing brucellosis prevalence. These results contribute to the scarce information available regarding the effect of Rev-1 vaccination on different characteristics of flocks. They may be used to improve the efficiency of brucellosis eradication programs within livestock management.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the relationships between milk fatty acid group contents and subsequent reproductive performance in Holstein cows. A total of 27 cows in the 1st to 4th lactations were included in the evaluation. Cows were divided into primiparous and multiparous groups. Daily milk yields increased in the first 8 weeks of lactation. Body condition score decreased until the third month of lactation. The present study was conducted to investigate plasma macrominerals (Ca, P, Na, K, and Mg) in adult male and female quails according to different body weights in four close-bred flocks of Japanese quails (Coturnix coturnix japonica) maintained at the Avian Research and Training Center of the University of Veterinary and Animal Sciences, Lahore. The results showed that mean plasma Na concentration was significantly (P < 0.05) different in female quails with respect to body size categories. The interaction between flocks and body size for plasma Ca levels was significant (P < 0.05) in both sexes of quails, whereas plasma Na was significant (P < 0.05) in female quails. The mean plasma P and K levels in imported and local flocks of Japanese quails were significantly (P < 0.05) different in female quails, whereas plasma Mg was significantly (P < 0.05) different in male quails. However, with respect to body size categories, plasma P, K, and Mg were significantly (P < 0.05) different in female quails only. The interaction between flocks and body size was significant for K and P in female quails and for plasma Mg levels in both sexes of quails.

The purpose of this paper is to verify the textural quality and acceptability of two different prepared emulsion-type fish sausages that were evaluated by using rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) and saithe (Pollachius virens) fillets. Texture properties of the fish sausages were compared with three different emulsion-type sausages (chicken, turkey, and beef sausages) using texture profile analysis (TPA), shear test, Kramer shear test, pate penetration test, cooking loss, and expressible moisture. According to the TPA and firmness values, some textural indicators were found significantly weak (P < 0.05), but they met consumers preferences.

The purpose of this experiment was to investigate the effects of feeding a low crude protein diet with supplemental dietary tryptophan in combination with pyridoxine and niacin compared with spray-dried porcine plasma (SDPP) supplementation on the performance and feed intake of weaning pigs. A total of 36 crossbred (Landrace × Yorkshire × Duroc) weaned female pigs of 28 days old were reared under three dietary treatments. This study assessed the effects of cellulase, xylanase, and their mixture (1:1, v/v) on in vitro rumen fermentation of five mixed rations with different maize silage (F) to concentrate (C) ratios (0F:100C, 25F:75C, 50F:50C, 75F:25C, 100F:0C). Samples were incubated using rumen inoculum from Brown Swiss cows fed ad libitum a total mixed ration of concentrate and alfalfa hay (1:1). Gas production (GP) was recorded after 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 24, 36, 48, and 72 h of incubation. Interaction effects (P < 0.0001) were observed between type of ration and enzyme for discrete lag time prior to GP. Ration type affected asymptotic GP (linear and quadratic, P < 0.0001) and in vitro GP at 24 h onward. Moreover, rations affected pH (linear and quadratic, P < 0.0001), dry matter degradability (quadratic, P = 0.05), metabolizable energy (linear, P = 0.038), short-chain fatty acids (linear, P = 0.0005), gas yield from truly digested dry matter at 24 h (linear, P = 0.0026), and microbial crude protein yield (linear, P = 0.0264). The most effective rations for in vitro GP during different times differed between different measured parameters. Enzyme administration was more effective when the ratio of maize silage was increased.

An experiment was conducted to assess the effects of polyethylene glycol (PEG-6000) and urea on feed intake, nitrogen retention, and nutrient digestibility in sheep fed raisin stalk. Sixteen male fat-tailed Sanjabi sheep (26 ± 0.66 kg) were randomly assigned to one of 4 dietary treatments: raisin stalk (control; RS), raisin stalk supplemented with 3% urea and 4% molasses (RSU3%); 5% urea and 7% molasses (RSU5%); or 5% urea, 7% molasses plus 5% PEG (RSU-PEG) per DM of raisin stalk. Research was conducted on 12 clinically healthy 4-year-old White Nobel goats. Renal activity examinations were carried out with the use of clearance methods where inulin was used as a testing substance to determine the level of glomerular filtration. The results allowed determination of inulin clearance, endogenic creatinine, sodium, potassium, and chloride levels. To investigate the influence of the retinol-binding protein 4 gene (RBP4) on the carcass and meat quality traits of swine, polymorphism was observed by PCR-SSCP in four Chinese native pig breeds (Huoshouhei, Anqingliubai, Wannanhei, and Wei), that were carefully selected for economic traits. The aim of this study was to determine the changes in serum nonesterified fatty acid (NEFA), serum ß-hydroxybutyric acid (ß-HBA), triglycerides, Ca, Na, and other metabolites (bilirubin, glutamate dehydrogenase (GLDH)) in the blood of grazing, healthy goats at the time of parturition. Blood samples were taken weekly from the jugular vein of 11 goats, starting at week 2 antepartum (ap) until week 9 postpartum (pp). NEFA and ß-HBA concentrations increased from week 2 ap to 2 weeks pp. The increase in NEFA level was not significant; however, the ß-HBA levels were higher (P < 0.05) 2 weeks pp compared to the levels at 2 weeks ap. Triglycerides were recorded at maximum levels (P < 0.05) 2 weeks ap, with the lowest concentrations at 3 weeks pp. Bilirubin levels consistently increased up to 7 weeks pp, followed by a decrease. However, these changes were not significant. Similarly, GLDH activities increased until week 8 pp. A significant difference (P < 0.05) was recorded between the 1st week and 8th week pp. Ca and Na levels were lower during the 1st week pp and increased at 3 weeks pp. The results show that there are characteristic alterations of some metabolic blood parameters in goats around the time of parturition, which may be related to physiological changes.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of dietary red grape pomace (RGP) on amino acid digestibility (AIAAD), intestinal microflora, and antioxidant activity in the sera and liver. Sixty-six broilers were housed in battery cages. They were allocated to six cages corresponding to two dietary treatments with three replicates of each treatment. The treatments were administered from 10 to 36 days and included a control diet and a diet containing 1.5% RGP dry powder with the other components remaining unchanged, compared to the control. The RGP had a significant (P < 0.05) positive effect on the apparent metabolizable energy. The majority of coefficients of AIAAD were higher in the RGP. The ileal digestibility of threonine, serine, proline, and glycine was significantly (P < 0.05) higher in RGP. RGP had a positive effect (P < 0.05) on the content of Lactobacillus in the lower part of the ileum. The blood sera of broilers fed RGP had significantly (P < 0.05) lower 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) and uric acid content. The RGP at a concentration of 15 g/kg in the grower diet did not affect the growth of broilers, and RGP is suitable for broiler diets to improve gastrointestinal tract functionality.

The purpose of this study was to describe the normal appearance of the bony and soft tissue structures of the thorax of neonatal foals by low-field magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and the use of anatomical dissections and gross sections. Three purebred Spanish neonatal foals that died for medical reasons unrelated to thoracic disease were used to obtain T1- and T2-weighted MR images using a magnet of 0.2 Tesla.
