The aim of the study was to investigate the shape of the foramen magnum and condylus occipitalis of mammalian species belonging to different feeding groups. For this, two-dimensional geometric morphometric method analyses were applied. The data from the skulls of the 12 species were used. In principal component analysis, the first three principal components accounted for 70.353%of the total shape variation. According to the first principal component, the dorsal edge of the condylus occipitalis and foramen magnum contributed the most to shape variation. Hemoplasma is commonly used to refer to hemotropic Mycoplasma bacterial species belonging to the genus Mycoplasma that can attach to the surface of red blood cells, potentially leading to hemolytic anemia. These organisms can infect a wide range of mammals, including companion animals and humans worldwide. Specifically for companion animals, two main hemoplasma species can infect dogs, and three major species can infect cats including Mycoplasma haemocanis, Candidatus Mycoplasma haematoparvum, Mycoplasma haemofelis, Candidatus Mycoplasma haemominutum, and Candidatus Mycoplasma turicensis, respectively. Pulmonary hypertension (PH) is defined by an abnormal elevation in pressure within pulmonary vasculature, often associated with degenerative mitral valve disease (DMVD) in dogs. While histopathological changes in the pulmonary arteries, known as pulmonary arterial remodeling, have been documented in human patients with PH, these alterations in DMVD dogs with PH have not been published. Sixty-three strains were isolated from ruminal fluid of crossbred dairy goats. Based on phenotype and 16S rRNA gene, sixteenbacterial groups were identified and two novel species of Selenomonas were purposed in this study. The strain mPRGC5 was purposed as Selenomonas runimis and the strain mPRGC8 was named Selenomonas caprae. The antimicrobial activity of all the strains was determined.Ligilactobacillus salivarius MP3 showed antibacterial activity against Cutibacterium acnes subsp. acnes DSM 1897' and Kocuria thizophila Mill. Eld’s deer is a conserved wildlife species in Thailand. Due to the limited population group in captivity, Eld’s deer is facing a crisis of low genetic diversity, particularly among the captive Siamese Eld’s deer (SED) subspecies. This study aimed to construct genomes for a SED and a Burmese Eld’s deer (BED) for the first time and use genome-wide single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) to assess the genetic purity and inbreeding status of 35 SED and 49 BED with limited pedigree data. Tilapia (Oreochromis sp.) is a freshwater fish that is highly popular for aquaculture in Thailand. To achieve high yields, good growth rates, and better feed conversion rates, 17-alpha-methyltestosterone are commonly used to induce male sex in farmed tilapia. However, it has been found in previous studies that these synthetic hormones have low water solubility and limited absorption capabilities, leading to excessive hormone use. Scale drop disease virus (SDDV) is a significant pathogen affecting Asian sea bass (Lates calcarifer) in Southeast Asia, causing scale drop syndrome (SDS) and resulting in high mortality and substantial economic losses in aquaculture. Recently, SDDV has been reported in Asian sea bass farms throughout the Asia-Pacific region including Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, and China. Despite extensive characterization of uropathogenic Escherichia coli (UPEC) causing urinary tract infections (UTIs), the genetic background of non-urinary extraintestinal pathogenic E. coli (ExPEC) in dogs, such as those causing canine pyometra, prostatic abscesses (PAs), and bloodstream infections (BSIs), remains inadequately understood. This study characterized the virulence determinants of 101 E. coli isolates from canine pyometra (n=61), PAs (n=38), and BSIs (n=2). The analysis revealed a stronger association of pyometra strains with UPEC compared to PA strains. Forty-one isolates were resistant to third-generation cephalosporins and/or fluoroquinolones, with 14 being extended-spectrum β-lactamase producers and carrying blaCTX-M. Vibriosis is a bacterial disease caused by Vibrio harveyi (V. harveyi; Vh ) that poses a substantial threat to Asian seabass (Lates calcarifer) aquaculture. In this study, we investigated alternative approaches to conventional injection vaccination for prevention of V. harveyi in Asian seabass. The first approach involved an immersion prime with heat-inactivated V. harveyi vaccine, followed by two oral booster doses (day 14-18 and day 28-32). Assessment Of Longitudinal Systolic Funcion By Using Tissue Motion Annular Displacement In Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy Cats, Nadthagarn Glaewketgarn

In humans, tissue motion annular displacement (TMAD) providesresponsive and accurate assessment on longitudinal systolic function. The aim ofthis study is to investigate the LV longitudinal systolic function in hypertrophiccardiomyopathy (HCM) and control cats by using TMAD. The study includes 26control cats and 21 HCM cats. Global TMAD were not influence by breed, sex, age,and heart rate. Global TMAD and % Global TMAD significantly decreased in theHCM group (2.86±0.86 mm and 11.46±3.37%) when compared to control group(3.95±0.89 mm and 16.12±2.94%) (p<0.001 and <0.001), suggesting LV longitudinalsystolic dysfunction in HCM cats. LV fractional shortening (LVFS) showed nodifference between the control (52.76±11.63%) and HCM stage group(59.80±13.51%) (p=0.061). Indicate that TMAD is a sensitive technique foridentifying LV longitudinal systolic dysfunction. Global TMAD and % global TMADhad a significant correlation with global longitudinal strain (GLS). Therefore, TMADcan be used to evaluate longitudinal systolic function in HCM. The reliability test ofglobal TMAD and % global TMAD were considered moderate. In conclusion, globalTMAD and % global TMAD was significantly decreased in cats with HCM comparedwith the control group and was considered as sensitive and repeatable techniquefor evaluating LV longitudinal systolic dysfunction in cats with HCM

The standard criteria for determining the safety of bacteria used as probiotics do not exist at this time. The objective of this investigation was to assess the feasibility and safety of eight lactic acid bacteria (LAB) strains employed as probiotics. Of these, four were Pediococcus acidilactici strains (IAF6519, IAF5919, AF2519, and AF2019), one Ligilactobacillus salivarius AF2319 derived from chickens and Pediococcus acidilactici P72N and Lactiplantibacillus plantarum L25F and L22F obtained from pigs. This clinical trial aimed to investigate the effects of probiotic supplementation in lactating sows on their serum immunoglobulin levels, milk yield, serum malondialdehyde (MDA), fecal short-chain fatty acid levels, piglet performance, and fecal microbiome. The research was conducted at a commercial swine breeding herd in central Thailand. The study included 109 Canadian Landrace × Yorkshire sows, with parity numbers ranging from 1 to 7. To date, porcine circoviruses (PCVs), particularly PCV2 and PCV3, have been identified globally, while PCV4 is mainly found in Asia. This study aimed to investigate the prevalence and genetic characterization of PCVs in Thai swine farms during 2019-2020. Results showed PCV2 is the predominant species, followed by PCV3 and PCV4. For genetic analysis, the dominant novel PCV2d cluster with amino acid mutation (133HDAM136) in ORF2 was found in Thai swine farms that had not been detected in Thailand before. Part 1 - Plasmid profile analysis of E. coli and Salmonella enterica isolated from pigs, pork, and humans. This part aimed to characterize the profile of R plasmids in E. coli (n=1,047) and Salmonella (n=816). Sixteen and 11 Inc groups were identified in E. coli (85.3%) and Salmonella (25.7%), of which IncK-F (23.7%) and IncF (46.2%) were predominant. Plasmid replicon was significantly different among sources of isolates and sampling periods but significantly correlated with resistance phenotype (p<0.05). In conclusion, various plasmids are present in E. coli and Salmonella. The findings in this part form a basis for future studies to explore the possible methodology to counteract horizontal transfer of plasmids. Part 2 - Genomic analysis of Salmonella carrying class 1 integrons with dfrA12-aadA2 gene cassette array isolated from food animals, meat and human in Thailand. This part aimed to investigate the genetic characteristics of transferable plasmid carrying class 1 integrons with dfrA12aadA2 cassette array in 15 Salmonella isolates using Oxford Nanopore Sequencing technologies and Illumina platform. Seven MLST types and 6 clades of phylogenetic trees were identified. IncFIB(K), ColpVC, IncFIB, IncHI2, IncHI2A, IncX1, IncY and IncR plasmids were found. All had 28 AMR genes with the prediction to be resistant to various antibiotic groups. All isolates except B82 which was isolated from human, carried class 1 integrons with dfrA12-DUF1010-aadA2 and qacE-sul1 in conserved region. In conclusion, transferable R plasmids play an important role in the wide distribution of class 1 integrons with dfrA12-aadA2 gene array. Part 3 - Molecular basis of the persistence of chloramphenicol (CHP) resistance among E. coli and Salmonella spp. from food animals, meat and human in Thailand. This study aimed to explore the potential mechanisms associated with the persistence of CHP resistance in E. coli (n=106) and Salmonella (n=57). Most E. coli (67.9%) and Salmonella (64.9%) had ≥4-fold CHP MIC decrease in the presence of PAβN. Ampicillin, tetracycline, and streptomycin selective pressure yielded cmlA-carrying Salmonella and E. coli-transconjugants resistant to CHP (MIC 32-512 µg/mL). IncF plasmids were common in cmlA-carrying Salmonella and E. coli transconjugants. The WGS analysis revealed cmlA1-class1 integrons flanked by IS26 and TnAs1 in IncX1 plasmid, IncFIA(HI1)/HI1B plasmids and IncFII/FIB plasmids, and catA flanked by IS1B and TnAs3 in IncFIA(HI1)/HI1B/Q1. In conclusion, the persistence of CHP-resistance was potentially mediated by cross resistance via multidrug efflux systems using proton motif force (pmf) and co-selection of CHP-resistance genes by other antimicrobials. Part 4 - Resistance to widely-used disinfectants and heavy metals and cross resistance to antibiotics in E. coli isolated from pigs, pork and pig carcass. This study aimed to determine the possible cross resistance between disinfectants/heavy metals and antibiotics in E. coli from pigs (n=643), pork (n=111) and pig carcasses (n=110) in Thailand. Exposure to triclosan (TCS), benzalkonium chloride (BKC) and chlorhexidine (CHX) selected for spontaneousresistant mutants exhibited cross resistance to at least one antibiotic. The presence of PAβN restored MICs of CHP and trimethoprim in BKC- and TCS-spontaneous resistant mutants but PAβN, CCCP and reserpine could not restore ciprofloxacin MIC in ciprofloxacin-resistant mutants with no gyrA and parC mutation. In conclusion, the widely used disinfectants and heavy metals serve as non-antibiotic selective pressure for emergence and spread of AMR via cross-resistance involved in pmf-dependent and/or independent mechanisms. Susceptibilities to disinfectants/heavy metals should be routinely monitored. For the overall conclusion, the objectives of this project were successfully achieved. Further studies are suggested for better understanding of AMR and implementing the strategic actions to contain AMR.

This study conducted a comprehensive investigation into mycobacteriosis in Siamese fighting fish (Betta splendens), a disease that poses major challenges to the sustainability of the sector. In the first phase, five different Mycobacterium species (i.e., M. chelonae, M. cosmeticum, M. farcinogenes, M. mucogenicum, and M. senegalense) were meticulously characterized. Bacterial speciation was determined through phenotypic and biochemical characteristics. Concurrently, antibiotic resistance of the bacteria with MAR indices ranging from 0.22 to 0.61, indicated potential challenges in treatment strategies. Furthermore, disinfectant susceptibility revealed that ethanol, formalin, chlorine, and povidone-iodine were effective in killing the bacteria, while potassium permanganate was less effective. …

Feline blood-borne pathogens are infectious agents which knowledge of prevalence and risk factors for infection is important to recognize pathogens that should be screened in blood. A total of 298 samples (GROUP A) and 112 archived samples (GROUP B) were collected from client-owned cats attending the veterinary hospital of Chulalongkorn University, and private veterinary hospitals in Bangkok and vicinity. In equine ophthalmology, ulcerative keratitis is among the most common conditions and, in general, arises as a consequence of some trauma suffered. Secondarily, subsequent contamination by pathogenic or resident bacteria of the horse's ocular microbiota may have undesirable consequences. Under physiological conditions, the normal microbiota coexists with the immune status of the host, serving as a barrier, ensuring the health of the ocular surface, and inhibiting the proliferation of pathogens. There are three separate yet interrelated products presented in this final capstone product. The completed product is focused on pet hospice veterinary support staff and the need for an evidence-based social work intervention to combat secondary traumatic stress. This capstone uses the andragogical approach to adult learning theory as the foundation to construct a psychoeducational peer support group specific to this population. Implications for clinical social work in veterinary medicine are presented within this project.
