Described are the results of harvesting the above-ground parts of an 18-year-old aspen stand and the observations made on the initial suckering of the new stand. The yields for the stand of 17.7 cunits per acre were greater than predicted yields of comparable material for the site at age 35. Suckering on the area the first year after cutting averaged 37,000 aspen stands per acre and 2.6 feet in height.

Five tables were prepared to show the relative amount of bark on each of the tree components, the concentration and range of 12 chemical elements in the bark of each tree component, the proportion of each of the chemical elements in the bark of that element in the complete tree, and the proportion of each element in the bark as compared to the wood and bark of the merchantable bole. The purpose of this report is to compare measurements of the quantity of throughfall at two different heights above ground level in a seven-year-old sucker stand of largetooth aspen (Populus grandidentata Michx.) This comparison defines the influence rain splash from the forest floor has on the quantity of throughfall catch of trough rain gauges placed on the forest floor.

This paper presents mathematical equations describing the relationships between the amount of net rain per storm under each crown canopy and the amount of gross rain per storm in a multi-storied forest community. The relationships were curvilinear and accounted for gradual filling of the storage capacity of the vegetation. The rate of increase of net rainfall was successively less for each crown canopy in turn starting with the uppermost canopy in the forest. The Department of Forestry has been carrying on silvicultural research in the white spruce (Picea glauca (Moench) Voss) and trembling aspen (Populus tremuloides Michx.) cover types in the Mixedwood Forest Section of Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba for about 40 years. Because of the needs of industry most of this research has been focused on spruce, and only as small portion on aspen. Cacodylic Acid As A Silvicide, Maurice W. Day

This report deals with the effectiveness of cacodylic acid (dimethylarsenic acid) as a silvicide for undesirable trees. Cacodylic acid has been used successfully as an herbicide for the destruction of grasses and weeds. Experimental work with this material was begun during the 1963 field season, and continued during 1964, to permit complete evaluation of the results. It appears that cacodylic acid has considerable potential as a silvicide.

West Virginia is traditionally a wood-producing state. Approximately 64 per cent of its land area is classified as commercial forest, and it has ranked as one of the nation’s top four producers of hardwood lumber for the past century.

A long-term failure of the state has been its inability to attract secondary wood industries into the area. The major portion of lumber produced in the state has been sent to outside concerns for further manufacturing and processing. In the past decade only about 18 per cent of the lumber produced in West Virginia was used for manufacture within the state. …
