The endophytic microbiome may influence the ecological performance of plants, including forest trees. Various abiotic and biotic factors may shape the endophyte communities directly but also indirectly, by modifying the quality of host plants as a substrate. We hypothesized that potentially antifungal or fungistatic condensed tannins (CTs) would determine the quality of aspen (Populus tremula) leaves as a substrate for endophytic fungi. In this research, the amounts of trans-resveratrol, (+)-catechin, (-)- epicatechin, and malvidin-3-glucoside which are among phenolic compounds as well as the total phenolic compound, total anthocyanin, and antioxidant capacity changes were examined in the Boğazkere (Vitis vinifera L.) grape, pomace before press, pomace after press and wine. In all parameters examined, a decrease was seen when proceeding from grape to wine, only (+)- catechin and (-)- epicatechin levels were detected to be higher in the prepress pomace. Effects Of Methyl Jasmonate On Quality Properties And Phytochemical Compounds Of Kiwifruit (Actinidia Deliciosa Cv. `Hayward') During Cold Storage And Shelf Life, Burhan Öztürk, Furkan Yücedağ

The research aimed to assess the effects of methyl jasmonate (0.25, 0.5, and 1.0 mM MeJA) on weight loss and phytochemical compounds of kiwifruit (Actinidia deliciosa cv. `Hayward') throughout the cold storage and shelf life. Kiwifruits were stored at 0 ± 0.5 °C and 90 ± 5% RH for 180 days, and at 20 ± 1.0 °C and 80 ± 5% RH for 5 days in shelf life conditions. During cold storage, weight loss was significantly lower (P < 0.05) in 0.25 and 1.0 mM MeJA treatments than those of control and 0.5 mM MeJA treatments. The highest flesh firmness was determined in MeJA-treated fruits. In the latest measurement period of cold storage and shelf life, the lowest respiration rate was obtained from 0.5 and 1.0 mM MeJA treatments. MeJA-treated fruits had significantly higher hue angle at the end of cold storage. Generally, in shelf life analysis, acidity of MeJA-treated fruits was significantly lower than that of control fruits. At the end of cold storage, the highest vitamin C, total flavonoids, and antioxidant activity (DPPH) were measured in 1.0 mM MeJA treatment, whereas the highest total phenolics were detected in 0.25 mM MeJA treatment. Present findings revealed that MeJA could be used as an effective postharvest tool to maintain flesh firmness and phytochemical compounds of kiwifruits.

In this study, the total phenolic content (TPC), total flavonoid content (TFC), in vitro antioxidant capacity and individual phenolic compounds of Juniperus drupacea Labill berry and pekmez (molasses) were determined. Since pekmez was the only edible form of berry, the bioaccessibility of phenolic compounds and the antioxidant capacity of the pekmez were assessed following exposure to simulated gastrointestinal conditions. This study was carried out to investigate the potential for the usability of treated olive mill wastewater (OMW) as an organic amendment in agricultural soils under Mediterranean climate conditions. OMW was treated by two different treatment processes as economical (E-OMW) and advanced (A-OMW). The treated OMWs and raw OMW (R-OMW) were applied to a loamy soil at a rate of 100 m3 ha-1 year-1 for 2 years. Honeysuckle berries are becoming an attractive organically grown fruit with many aspects as a new functional food. They have the benefit of containing health-promoting compounds, such as saponins, ascorbic acid, iridoids, flavonoids, and anthocyanins. Fruit berries can be processed into many products with various contents of selected bioactive compounds. The contents of individual compounds were identified with the aid of high-performance liquid chromatography coupled with mass spectrophotometry. The biomass per plant and total phenolics (TPH) of ethanol extracts of 3 species of thyme, Thymus vulgaris, T. serpyllum, and T. citriodorus, and 3 varieties of basil (Ocimum basilicum), Genovese, Thai, and Cinnamon, were investigated. The aim of the study was to investigate the impact of the on-vine double maturation raisonnée (DMR) and off-vine berry partial dehydration in the chamber (PDC) on the chemical characteristics of the grape and wine grapevine cultivar 'Refosk'. A liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) system was used for the identification and quantification of phenolics and the HPLC for sugars and organic acids. Berries subjected to DMR partial dehydration reached technological maturity (18.5 °Brix) within 14 days of cane cutting and those under PDC in 22 days upon harvest. As blueberries ripen successively and are commercially harvested over a period of several weeks, their composition may be altered during the harvest. The aim of this study was to compare blueberry fruit composition during the entire harvest season. Fully ripe fruits of two northern highbush blueberry cultivars (Bluecrop and Jersey) were harvested weekly at two different locations. Additionally, the Earliblue cultivar was monitored at a single location. Most of the examined characteristics changed during the harvest season and were cultivar-dependent, with smaller differences observed between sampling locations. In the present study, response surface methodology was conducted for the determination of effects of some phenolics (gallic acid, ellagic acid, and quercetin) on some stability parameters of mixed oil prepared with sunflower and hazelnut oils (50:50, v/v). In this respect, peroxide value (PV), free fatty acids (FFAs), p-anisidine value, induction period, and refractive index of mixed oil were investigated. Predictive regression equations were constructed for the estimation of each studied parameter (R^2 > 0.861). The present study was carried out to determine the effects of methyl jasmonate (MeJA) treatments on the fruit peel color parameters, anthocyanin content, ethylene biosynthesis, phenolic content, and antioxidant capacity of Braeburn apples. Experimental trees were treated with 1120, 2240, or 4480 mg L-1 MeJA at 1- and 2-week intervals between the 105th and 175th days of growth after full bloom. L* and hue decreased linearly with increasing MeJA concentrations in both experimental years. This study aimed to determine the physicochemical properties of the green tea powders produced from 2 different Turkish tea [Camellia sinensis (L.) O.Kuntze] clones (Derepazarı 7 and Fener) grown under different shade levels and harvested during 2 consecutive shooting periods. Moisture, ash, crude fiber, and total phenolic contents of the green tea powders were determined based on the experimental factors. Salvia tomentosa is a common medicinal plant, and it is consumed as an herbal tea in some Mediterranean countries. It has been extensively collected from its natural habitat, and careless collection has caused the recent extinction of some plants. The present study was undertaken to cultivate S. tomentosa and compare the phenolic composition and antioxidant properties of wild and cultivated plants. Table grapes (Vitis vinifera) of the cultivar Shahroudi were coated with 0.5% or 1% chitosan and then stored at 0 °C for 60 days. Shelf-life qualitative traits including rachis and berry appearance and berry cracking, shattering, decay, browning, acceptability, and flavor were evaluated. Treated berries showed less weight loss, decay, browning, shattering, and cracking. Flavor-related factors such as total soluble solids (TSS), titratable acidity (TA), and TSS/TA ratio levels were higher in treated fruits; however, there was no significant difference between the fruits treated with 0.5% and 1% chitosan. Hypericum triquetrifolium is a promising medicinal plant from eastern Europe and the Mediterranean area. The present study was conducted to determine ontogenetic and morphogenetic variation of chlorogenic acid, rutin, hyperoside, isoquercetin, quercitrin, and quercetin content in this species. The wild-growing and greenhouse-grown plants were harvested at vegetative, floral budding, full flowering, fresh fruiting, and mature fruiting stages and were dissected into stem, leaf, and reproductive tissues, which were dried separately and subsequently assayed for bioactive compounds by high performance liquid chromatography.
