Iron (Fe) deficiency is one of the common problems in strawberry (Fragaria × ananassa Duch.) growing regions. In vitro screening enables researchers to evaluate genotype performance under several concentrations of Fe in a relatively fast and economical way. Therefore, we evaluated the responses of several genotypes belonging to octoploid Fragaria chiloensis (L.) Mill. and Fragaria virginiana Mill. (the progenitors of cultivated strawberry) against Fe treatments under in vitro conditions. In the first experiment, HM 1, Pigeon Point, CFRA1267 (F. chiloensis subsp. pacifica), and CA1541 (F. chiloensis subsp. chiloensis) were tested with various Fe concentrations (0%, 10%, 15%, 25%, 50%, 65%, …

Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry

Polygalacturonase-inhibiting proteins (PGIP) play important roles in the defense against plant pathogens, especially fungi. The sequence of strawberry PGIP gene was obtained using reverse transcription PCR (RT-PCR) and its expression in different tissues was studied by semi-quantitative RT-PCR. A cDNA fragment of FaPGIP gene was cloned and the sequence analysis shows that the fragment contains a full ORF of 999 bp encoding 332 amino acids. The FaPGIP gene from genomic DNA shows a single 168bp intron that is efficiently spliced out of the FaPGIP pre-mRNA transcript. The FaPGIP has a high degree of identity with previously isolated PGIP genes and …

Growth And Stomatal Behaviour Of Two Strawberry Cultivars Under Long-Term Salinity Stress, Ece Turhan, Ati̇lla Eri̇ş

Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry

Sodium chloride (NaCl) treatments were conducted on strawberry plants (Fragaria x ananassa cvs. Camarosa and Chandler) grown under greenhouse conditions. Modified Hoagland solution (one-third strength) containing 0 (control), 8.5, 17.0 and 34.0 mM NaCl was applied to the plants for 6 months. High NaCl concentrations caused serious reductions in growth parameters such as fresh weight (FW) of leaves, stems and roots, leaf area and the number of leaves. Addition of salt to the growth medium caused a reduction in stomatal conductance (Gs) and transpiration rate (E) of Camarosa. Saline water up to 34 mM NaCl did not have any influence …

Three strawberry (Fragaria x ananassa. Duch.) varieties commercially grown in Israel (Tamar, Yael and Malach) were studied for their volatile compositions. Two techniques were compared: headspace solid phase micro extraction (HS-SPME) and liquid-liquid extraction (organic solvent: tert-butyl methyl ether) by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS). The influences of techniques on the volatile compounds were tested by comparing the volatiles determined in the 3 varieties. Malach, the most aromatic variety, accumulates high levels of furanones and esters compared to the other varieties. Differences in the aroma profiles obtained by utiliszing different techniques were noted. HS-SPME was more suitable for the determination of …
