This study was conducted to compare the spray coverage rate and spray uniformity of seven different types of hydraulic nozzles (standard flat fan nozzles, ST; multirange nozzles, LU; air induction nozzles, IDK; twinjet air-induction nozzles, IDKT; narrow cone-angle standard nozzles, STD; hollow cone nozzles, DC; and antidrift nozzles, AD) commonly used in pesticide applications at low application volumes. All spray applications were carried out at a constant operating pressure of 300 kPa and a low application volume of 80 L/ha. The Effects Of Wheatgrass Length On Antioxidant Activity And Total Phenolic Content Inwheatgrass (Triticum Spp.), Yusuf Şavşatli

This study was carried out with the aim of determining the effects of wheatgrass lengths on antioxidant activity and total phenolic content of wheatgrass belonging to different cultivars (Triticum spp.) in laboratory conditions in 2017. When the wheat seedlings grown in plastic containers under soilless conditions reached three levels of wheatgrass length (5-6, 8-9, and 11-12 cm), the seedlings were cut from the root collar and dried in an oven. As a result of analysis of the dried material, it was found that the cut lengths of wheatgrass significantly (P < 0.01) affected antioxidant activity and total phenolic content of wheatgrass. Ten wheat cultivars belonging to Triticum monococcum L., T. durum L., and T. aestivum L. were used. Wheatgrass was cut at three lengths (5-6, 8-9, and 11-12 cm). It was found that the wheatgrass lengths had a significant (P < 0.01) effect on antioxidant and total phenolic content of wheatgrass. In addition, in terms of these traits, the most suitable wheatgrass length for cutting changed depending on the wheat species and also cultivars. The highest (P < 0.01) antioxidant activity and total phenolic content (TPC) were also determined at three wheatgrass lengths in cultivar Sarıbaşak. The average values obtained from Sarıbaşak wheatgrass were 31.0% for DPPH-free radical scavenging activity and 51.6 mg GAE-1 dry weight for TPC. The results of the analysis suggested that Sarıbaşak is the most promising cultivar in terms of both antioxidant activity and TPC in wheatgrass.

The decline of upland oak (Quercus spp.) communities in our eastern forests has been attributed to the loss of periodic disturbance after decades of fire suppression. The alteration of historical disturbance regimes, forest parcelization, and varying goals among landowners all present challenges to oak management in the eastern U.S. Foresters and landowners need tools to promote oak sustainability that are applicable on small forestland holdings and within complex management plans. From this perspective, this research evaluates a crop-tree release study installed in southeastern Kentucky in 1983. This research assesses the effects of silvicultural thinnings, varying in residual basal area and number of thinnings, on genetic diversity and relatedness of white oak (Quercus alba L.). The objectives were to (1) develop microsatellite DNA markers (simple sequence repeats, SSRs) for assessing the genetic diversity of white oak and (2) determine if thinnings significantly change the degree of diversity and relatedness in white oak stands. For objective 1, 84 primer pairs from previously predicted genomic SSRs of white oak were evaluated for consistent PCR amplification and polymorphism. Spatial patterns of moisture and tree species have been studied using environmental gradients, often represented by terrain attributes in GIS. With climate change, GIS terrain variables, which are static as long as the elevation remains unchanged, will not reflect alterations in temperature, water cycle, and atmospheric conditions. The impact of shelterwood and patch cuts harvests on bat communities was tested at three sites in Eastern Kentucky. Shelterwood harvests had 50% of the basal area and understory removed to create a uniform spacing of residual trees. Patch cuts had 1-hectare circular openings created to remove 50% of the basal area creating an aggregated spacing of residual trees. Acoustic detectors were deployed to assess activity levels pre-harvest. Sites were then sampled from 1 – 2 years post-harvest to determine differences. Surface mining for coal has left scars on landscapes and reduced ecosystem functions across Appalachia for over a century. In the Monongahela National Forest, WV, a restoration project has been going on since 2009 on legacy minelands that dissect the biodiverse high elevation red spruce ecosystem. Goals of the restoration project include watershed improvement, soil building, enhancement of early successional habitat, and reforestation. Decompaction of the minelands is a critical step in the restoration process, and allows native vegetation to begin colonizing the site. Emerald ash borer, EAB, (Agrilus planipennis Fairmaire) is an invasive beetle that kills ash trees. It was accidentally introduced from China, and has rapidly expanded across North America, now occupying much of the eastern US. Four classical biocontrol parasitoids have been released to help mitigate its spread and impact: Tetrastichus planipennisi Yang, Spathius agrili Yang, S. galinae Belokobylskij and Strazanac, and Oobius agrili Zhang and Huang. In the United States, forests sequester 17% of national carbon (C) emissions annually (UGCRP, 2018), however shifting forest disturbances threaten the stability of this essential C sink. Unlike the high severity, stand-replacing disturbances that were widespread a century ago, today’s eastern temperate forests experience frequent low-to-moderate severity disturbances from invasive pests and pathogens with mixed effects on net primary production (NPP). Species range margins are often characterised by high degrees of habitat fragmentation resulting in low genetic diversity and higher gene flow from populations at the core of the species range. Interspecific gene flow from a closely related species with abutting range margins can increase standing genetic diversity and generate novel allelic combinations thereby alleviating limits to adaptive evolution in range margin populations. Following 20th century logging, much of the natural coast redwood (Sequoia sempervirens) range consists of dense second-growth stands with slow tree growth and low biodiversity. There is a landscape-scale effort in much of coastal northern California to increase tree growth rates and ecosystem biodiversity via thinning treatments, thereby hopefully accelerating the development of old-growth forest characteristics. The aim of this work was to compare 'Nero' and 'Viking' aronia cultivars and to determine the optimum harvest dates of each cultivar for various utilizations. For this purpose, we characterized the changes in both aronia cultivars' physicochemical components over their harvest period and identified the correlations between them. Mean berry weight, dry matter, soluble solid content, antioxidant activity, and anthocyanin content of berries of both cultivars increased until the second and third weeks of September. In this study, genetic diversity among 71 bean genotypes (41 pinto beans and 30 fresh bean genotypes) and 4 commercial cultivars (Aleyna, Gina, Perolar, and Serra) commonly grown at Erzincan province in Turkey were investigated. The iPBS (inter-primer binding site) markers were used to investigate the genetic diversity of the genotypes. Polymorphism ratio was identified as 100% in all primers. This paper presents some of the main structural and ecological characteristics of the mixed broadleaved old-growth forest with beech [Fagus moesiaca (Domin, Maly) Czecz.], sycamore maple (Acer pseudoplatanus L.) and European ash (Fraxinus excelsior L.) from the preserve area of the Biogradska Gora. Disturbances by herbivores can drive nutrient cycling in forest ecosystems by adding frass, carcasses, and molts to the forest floor which are broken down into nitrogen, phosphorous, and other elements to be recycled into biomass. Western spruce budworms are defoliators native to the central Cascades and their herbivory could increase the decomposition rate of forest materials by adding essential nutrients and/or by increasing light and rainfall penetration to the forest floor by thinning the forest canopy during outbreaks. Hazelnut is one of the most popular nuts consumed by people; it has different cultivars in Turkey. The aim of the current study was to characterize some physicomechanical characteristics, shape features, color, and biochemical properties of 6 standard and 3 local hazelnut cultivars grown in Turkey. The shape and size properties of the samples were determined using image processing techniques as an alternative to conventional measurement methods. Additionally, principal component analysis (PCA) was used to classify the hazelnut samples in terms of the biochemical parameters of the hazelnut cultivars. Quinoa is an important staple food crop for millions of impoverished rural inhabitants of the Andean region. Quinoa is considered a good source of protein,vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. This study aimed to investigate the genetic diversity and population structure of world quinoa germplasm originating from 8 countries through the iPBS-retrotransposon marker system. Molecular characterization was performed using the 11 most polymorphic primers. A total of 235 bands were recorded, of which 66.8% were polymorphic.
