The Effect Of Putrescine On Dna Methylation On Cabbage Plant Under Salt Stress Conditions, Emi̇ne Orhan, Furkan Uzundumlu, Esma Yi̇ği̇der, Murat Aydin

Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry

Although studies on tolerance to abiotic stress conditions in cabbage species and varieties have been carried out, these studies have generally been conducted in field and greenhouse pot experiments. In such studies, morphological measurements and evaluations have been made. However, there are deficiencies in physiological and molecular detection studies. Therefore, this study focused on detecting any DNA methylation change in the genome of cabbage seedlings when NaCl (salt stress) in combination with putrescine (Put) was applied. Different concentrations of NaCl and Put were applied to white head cabbage (Brassica oleraceae L. cv Yalova-F1). Germination rate, root length, shoot length, seedling …

It is due to the lack of renewable fiber sources for industrial purposes that the need for finding available and alternative material has become imperative. Kenaf (Hibiscus cannabinus L.), a fast-growing industrial crop, would be a potential solution for valorizing salinized lands and/or soils irrigated with saline water. With the aim of selecting and valorizing salt-tolerant species with high fiber yields and industrial values, we launched the assessment of the performance of kenaf culture (var. Guangdong 743-2) under salinity constraints. Germination and vegetative stages were considered in the present study to better evaluate the whole life cycle of the species. …

Comparison Of Two Halophyte Species (Salsola Soda And Portulaca Oleracea)For Salt Removal Potential Under Different Soil Salinity Conditions, Sema Karakaş, Mehmet Ali̇ Çullu, Murat Di̇ki̇li̇taş

Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry

Salt-induced land degradation has gradually increased in several major irrigation schemes within arid and semiarid regions. To maximize crop productivity under saline conditions, either salt tolerance crops should be cultivated or areas should be desalinated. One of the most promising and cost-effective ways to maximize crop productivity is to use salt tolerant plants to remove salt from the soil. For this study, four levels of saline soils were cultivated with the halophyte species Salsola soda L. and Portulaca oleracea L. in pots. The soils had the following salinity levels: 1) nonsaline soil (NSS, 0.9 dS m-1), 2) slightly saline soil …

Inoculation With Bacillus Licheniformis Mh48 To Improve Camellia Japonicaseedling Development In Coastal Lands, Hyun-Gyu Park, Min-Hae Jeong, Young-Sang Ahn

Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry

This study aimed to determine the promotion of the growth and nutrient uptake of Camellia japonica seedlings in coastal lands by bacterial inoculation. Soil salinity reduces plant growth and development in coastal areas due to the osmotic stress that perturbs nutrient uptake. The soil electrical conductivity at the sites of this study ranged from 1.02 to 1.89 dS m-1. Application of chemical fertilizer resulted in the limited uptake of nutrients in seedlings under saline conditions as well as a low nutrient content in the soil caused by leaching, with no significant influence on the growth of the seedlings. However, Bacillus …

Bread Wheat Responds Salt Stress Better Than Einkorn Wheat Does During Germination, Di̇dem Aslan, Nusret Zenci̇rci̇, Murat Etöz, Bülent Ordu, Sara Bataw

Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry

Salt stress during germination degenerates crop establishment and declines yield in wheat (Triticum subsp.). Against salt (NaCl) stress, we investigated 12 bread (Triticum aestivum L.) and 10 einkorn wheat (T. monococcum subsp. monococcum) entries for germination rate, germinating power, coleoptile length, shoot length, root length, shoot/root length ratio, root fresh weight, root dry weight, and root fresh/dry weigh ratio. An effective blocking in variance analysis improved statistical significance and differentiation between germination stages and wheat entries. Salt total and salt ranking tolerance indices grouped the wheat entries into tolerant (Bayraktar 2000, Gerek 79, İkizce 96, Gün 91, Demir 2000, and …

Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry

V-myb avian myeloblastosis viral oncogene homolog (MYB) transcription factors play important roles in the processes of plant growth, development, and stress responses. In this study, a full-length cDNA sequence of a MYB gene, designated FvMYB1, was isolated from Arizona ash (Fraxinus velutina Torr.) for the first time. Sequence analysis showed that the deduced amino acid sequence of FvMYB1 encoded novel MYB proteins with single DNA binding domains. Based on the R3 domain amino acid sequence, the FvMYB1 was closely related to some proteins whose functions were known. The expression pattern of FvMYB1 in different organs of Arizona ash was analyzed …

Zinc Alleviates Salt Stress And Increases Antioxidant Enzyme Activity In The Leaves Of Pistachio (Pistacia Vera L. ‘Badami’) Seedlings, Vahid Tavallali, Majid Rahemi, Saeed Eshghi, Bahman Kholdebarin, Asghar Ramezanian Jan 2010

Zinc Alleviates Salt Stress And Increases Antioxidant Enzyme Activity In The Leaves Of Pistachio (Pistacia Vera L. ‘Badami’) Seedlings, Vahid Tavallali, Majid Rahemi, Saeed Eshghi, Bahman Kholdebarin, Asghar Ramezanian

Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry

The mechanism(s) by which Zn alleviates NaCl stress was investigated in Pistacia vera L. 'Badami'. Pistachio seedlings were treated with 0, 800, 1600, 2400, and 3200 mg of NaCl kg^{-1} of soil, along with Zn (0, 5, 10, and 20 mg kg^{-1} of soil). NaCl stress induced high oxidative stress, increasing lipid peroxidation, electrolyte leakage, and lipoxygenase (LOX, E.C. 1.13.11.12) activity to high levels. Zn supplement efficiently reduced all these adverse effects of salt stress. However, there were no significant differences among the above parameters in plants treated with Zn only. NaCl stress significantly increased the activity of antioxidant enzymes. …

Growth And Stomatal Behaviour Of Two Strawberry Cultivars Under Long-Term Salinity Stress, Ece Turhan, Ati̇lla Eri̇ş

Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry

Sodium chloride (NaCl) treatments were conducted on strawberry plants (Fragaria x ananassa cvs. Camarosa and Chandler) grown under greenhouse conditions. Modified Hoagland solution (one-third strength) containing 0 (control), 8.5, 17.0 and 34.0 mM NaCl was applied to the plants for 6 months. High NaCl concentrations caused serious reductions in growth parameters such as fresh weight (FW) of leaves, stems and roots, leaf area and the number of leaves. Addition of salt to the growth medium caused a reduction in stomatal conductance (Gs) and transpiration rate (E) of Camarosa. Saline water up to 34 mM NaCl did not have any influence …
