Lentil (Lens culinaris) is one of the most important cool season pulse crops, which is rich in carbohydrates, proteins, minerals, and fibers. It encounters various abiotic stresses that negatively impacts the crop productivity. With an increasing global average temperature, the effect of heat stress on lentil seed germination needs to be addressed. Seed priming is a cost-effective quality enhancement technique for mitigating abiotic stresses in several crops. Thus, this study was conducted to evaluate the feasibility of priming techniques to mitigate heat stress. Heat stress (30 and 20 °C for 16 and 8 h, respectively) hampered seed germination and affected …

Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry

It is well-known that salinity is an important adverse environmental factor (abiotic stresses) that limits plant growth, development, and productivity all over the world. Herein, we report for the first time the use of graphene oxide (GO) as a promising material against the salinity stress using melon (Cucumis melo L.) seeds as the model crop. GO as a priming material possesses various advantages such as being highly water-soluble, nontoxic, producible on a large scale from graphite, and low-cost over the existing materials. In this study, we identified the effect of different GO doses (0, 0.25, 0.50, 0.75, and 1.0 mg/mL) …

Effects Of Different Soil Salinity Levels On Germination And Seedling Growth Of Safflower (Carthamus Tinctorius L.), Mehmet Demi̇r Kaya, Ari̇f İpek, Ahmet Öztürk

Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry

Safflower (Carthamus tinctorius L.) is rated as moderately salt tolerant and it can produce profitable crops on saline soils. It is slightly more tolerant of salinity than barley but is more tolerant than wheat. Because salinity reduces germination and delays emergence, safflower stands tend to be irregular and crop yield is depressed. However, some varieties are less affected by salinity than others. In this study, we aimed to determine the effects of soil salinity levels (0.8, 2.5, 5.1, 8.7, 13.0, 15.2 and 23.0 dS m^{-1}) on germination and seedling growth of three safflower varieties, one of which is spiny (5-154 …
