Additive manufacturing has recently gained the attention of multiple stakeholders, including those in the advanced manufacturing industry, research and government labs, academia, and the Navy community. Various efforts within the Navy focus on studying the best way for parts to be built and repaired for marine and naval vessels. Rapid manufacturing of spare components is particularly important for sailors, especially while deployed on warships, as they often do not have timely access to spare parts from the supply chain. For that purpose, a multidisciplinary team of engineering and education faculty have developed a series of workshops to train on-duty sailors …
Degradation Resistant Surface Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy Substrates, Ryan D. Scherzer
Degradation Resistant Surface Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy Substrates, Ryan D. Scherzer
UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Raman spectroscopy is employed by NASA, and many others, to detect trace amounts of substances. Unfortunately, the Raman signal is generally too weak to detect when very small, but non-trivial, amounts of molecules are present. One way around this weak signal is to use surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS).
When used as substrates for SERS, metallic nanorods grown using physical vapor deposition (PVD) provide a large enhancement factor to the Raman signal, as much as 1012. However, Silver (Ag) nanorods that give high enhancement suffer from rapid degradation as a function of time and exposure to harsh environment. …

Recovering energy from low grade energy sources such as waste heat is one of the methods for improving the performance of thermodynamic cycles. The objective of this work was to achieve long-term steady state operation of a Free-Piston Linear Expander (FPLE) and to compare the FPLE with the currently existing expander types for use in low temperature energy recovery systems. A previously designed FPLE with a single piston, two chambers, and linear alternator was studied …
A Hybrid Nonlinear Vibration Energy Harvester, Wei Yang, Shahrzad Towfighian
A Hybrid Nonlinear Vibration Energy Harvester, Wei Yang, Shahrzad Towfighian
Mechanical Engineering Faculty Scholarship
Vibration energy harvesting converts mechanical energy from ambient sources to electricity to power remote sensors. Compared to linear resonators that have poor performance away from their natural frequency, nonlinear vibration energy harvesters perform better because they use vibration energy over a broader spectrum. We present a hybrid nonlinear energy harvester that combines bi-stability with internal resonance to increase the frequency bandwidth. A two-fold increase in the frequency bandwidth can be obtained compared to a bi-stable system with fixed magnets. The harvester consists of a piezoelectric cantilever beam carrying a movable magnet facing a fixed magnet. A spring allows the magnet …

A Study Of Acoustic Reflections To Determine The Location, Size, Shape, And Orientation Of Reflecting Objects, Brandon M. Heller
Masters Theses
This study was conducted to examine the properties of sound in relation to echolocation, specifically in relation to its use by humans. Through my thesis, objects of varying shape and size were subjected to a sound wave to determine details about the object from the reflected sound. The shapes' comparisons were conducted at varying distances, measuring the intensity of the returning sound wave at several frequencies. The results demonstrated a correlation between the intensity of the sound in regards to distances, area of the reflector, and the shape of the reflector.
Toward Human-Like Automated Driving: Learning Spacing Profiles From Human Driving Data, Syed Ali
Toward Human-Like Automated Driving: Learning Spacing Profiles From Human Driving Data, Syed Ali
Wayne State University Dissertations
For automated driving vehicles to be accepted by their users and safely integrate with traffic involving human drivers, they need to act and behave like human drivers. This not only involves understanding how the human driver or occupant in the automated vehicle expects their vehicle to operate, but also involves how other road users perceive the automated vehicle’s intentions. This research aimed at learning how drivers space themselves while driving around other vehicles. It is shown that an optimized lane change maneuver does create a solution that is much different than what a human would do. There is a need …

Strain Rate Dependence And Impact Behavior Of Abs (Acrylonitrile-Butadiene-Styrene) Amorphous Thermoplastic, Mehmet Akif Dundar
Wayne State University Dissertations
ABS (acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene) is an extensively utilized amorphous thermoplastic in numerous engineering applications, such as marine, aerospace, automotive, electronic enclosures and housings because it offers many distinctive material properties, including good impact resistance, high toughness, high stiffness and high compressive strength. The most considerable material quality of ABS is its excellent impact resistance compared to other amorphous thermoplastics and this distinguished material ability makes the ABS very appealing for such unique engineering applications where a good impact resistance is highly needed. Nevertheless, the material behavior of ABS under impact loads is highly complex due to chaotically arranged chain macromolecules and randomly …

Simulation Of Human Ankle Trajectory During Stance Phase Of Gait, Leslie Castelino
Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports
A simulation was developed which mimics the human gait characteristics based on the input of an individual’s gait trajectory. This simulation also estimates the impedance of the human ankle based on the ground reaction forces measured by the force plate. This simulation will accept alterations of the following parameters: total body weight, weight of the shank, weight of the foot, trajectories of the shank and foot of the individual and orientation of the force plate, which would generate a new gait trajectory for the ankle during the stance phase of gait. The goal of this simulation was to validate the …

Exploiting Modern Image Processing In Surface Flow Visualisation, Tarek Ihab Abdelsalam, Richard Williams, Grant Ingram
Exploiting Modern Image Processing In Surface Flow Visualisation, Tarek Ihab Abdelsalam, Richard Williams, Grant Ingram
Mechanical Engineering
Surface flow visualisation is an experimental technique where the surface of interest is painted with an oil and dye mixture before a flow is applied to the object. In regions of high shear stress the oil/dye mixture is then removed and in regions of low shear stress the oil/dye mixture stays or builds up. The resulting pattern can be analysed to determine the structure near the surface under test, this is normally done in a qualitative manner with flow structures being identified based on the expertise of the experimentalist. Modern image processing tools can identify shapes and lines in pictures …

Dynamic Testing Of Bovine Cortical Bone, Kenton Wong
Dynamic Testing Of Bovine Cortical Bone, Kenton Wong
Honors Theses
Bone is the primary structural element of mammalian animals. It plays a critical role in support, strength, and resilience, and has been the subject of many investigations into its material properties. The high strain rate behavior of bone has remained relatively unexplored, however, and its properties under dynamic loads perpendicular to the diaphysis of the bone are somewhat poorly understood. Bone is an anisotropic material and displays different properties depending on its orientation during testing. It is known that bone is weaker under a compressive load in the transverse direction, but the relationship has not been tested at high strain …

Anisotropic Character Of Low-Order Turbulent Flow Descriptions Through The Proper Orthogonal Decomposition, Nicholas Hamilton, Murat Tutkun, Raúl Bayoán Cal
Mechanical and Materials Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations
Proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) is applied to distinct data sets in order to characterize the propagation of error arising from basis truncation in the description of turbulence. Experimental data from stereo particle image velocimetry measurements in a wind turbine array and direct numerical simulation data from a fully developed channel flow are used to illustrate dependence of the anisotropy tensor invariants as a function of POD modes used in low-order descriptions. In all cases, ensembles of snapshots illuminate a variety of anisotropic states of turbulence. In the near wake of a model wind turbine, the turbulence field reflects the periodic …

Mechanical and Materials Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations
Lithium-ion (Li-ion) batteries based on spinel transition-metal oxide electrodes have exhibited excellent electrochemical performance. The reversible intercalation/deintercalation of Li-ions in spinel materials enables not only energy storage but also nondestructive control of the electrodes’ physical properties. This feature will beneft the fabrication of novel Li-ion controlled electronic devices. In this work, reversible control of ferromagnetism was realized by the guided motion of Li-ions in MnFe2O4 and γ-Fe2O3 utilizing miniature lithium-battery devices. The in-situ characterization of magnetization during the Li-ion intercalation/deintercalation process was conducted, and a reversible variation of saturation magnetization over 10% was observed …

Open Access Theses & Dissertations
Increasing numbers of satellite missions necessitate a standalone power supply with self-recovery capabilities in case of failure in the space environment. A self-repairing kit was developed with the capabilities to repair the damaged solar array by dispensing conductive inks. Dispensing of conductive materials using direct writing technology to the space environment not only repairs damaged electronic components but also demonstrates the possibilities of manufacturing in outer space. For earth application, properties of direct writing inks have been evolved. In space application, direct writing inks or conductive inks have some issues such as outgassing, vapor pressure, curing etc. Therefore, having the properties …

Organic-Inorganic Graphite And Transition Metal Dichalcogenide Based Composites For 3d Printing, Jorge Alfredo Catalan Gonzalez
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
This project was multipronged to help fuse together topics of additive manufacturing and two-dimensional (2D) layered materials, and studying the mechanical and electrical properties of the composites produced. The composites are made from the thermoplastic polymer acting as a matrix and the graphite and 2D transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) serving as the filler or reinforcement. Different concentrations of TMD's were added to the matrix to study the effect of composition on the mechanical and electrical properties. To shed insights into the mechanical properties, test coupons were produced as "dog bone" structures for tensile testing using the ASTM D638 type 5 …

Flexible Analysis Of Creep Rupture Database And Accelerating The Acquisition Of Creep Rupture Data, Christopher Ramirez
Flexible Analysis Of Creep Rupture Database And Accelerating The Acquisition Of Creep Rupture Data, Christopher Ramirez
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
A comprehensive statistical analysis of creep data is a difficult task because there are many layers of uncertainty for a given dataset. Sources of uncertainty are inherent in both the databases that provide data, and the data themselves. Additionally, creep rupture predictions made with time-temperature parameter (TTP) models add an additional layer of uncertainty due to the fundamentally different ways in which each TTP model predicts creep behavior. A set of guidelines from the ECCC currently exist for such analyses, but they are best suited for narrowly-defined datasets. In this study, a broader set of guidelines are developed to analyze …
