Design Optimization And Motion Planning For Pneumatically-Actuated Manipulators, Daniel Mark Bodily
Design Optimization And Motion Planning For Pneumatically-Actuated Manipulators, Daniel Mark Bodily
Theses and Dissertations
Soft robotic systems are becoming increasingly popular as they are generally safer, lighter, and easier to manufacture than their more rigid, traditional counterparts. These advantages allow an increased sense of freedom in both the design and operation of these platforms. In this work, we seek methods of leveraging this freedom to both design and plan motions for two different serial-chain, pneumatically actuated manipulators developed by Pneubotics, a small startup company based in San Francisco. In doing so, we focus primarily on two related endeavors: (1) the optimal kinematic design of these and other similar robots (i.e., choosing link lengths, base …

The research presented in this dissertation addresses the application of evolution algorithms, i.e. Genetic Algorithm (GA) and Differential Evolution algorithm (DE) to scheduling problems in the presence of restricted conditions and resource limitations. This research is motivated by the scheduling of engineering design tasks in shop scheduling problems and ship maintenance scheduling problems to minimize total completion time. The thesis consists of two major parts; the first corresponds to the first appended paper and deals with the computational complexity of mixed shop scheduling problems. A modified Genetic algorithm is proposed to solve the problem. Computational experiments, conducted to evaluate its …
Multi-Mode Resource Constrained Project Scheduling Using Differential Evolution Algorithm, Faisal Manour Altarazi
Multi-Mode Resource Constrained Project Scheduling Using Differential Evolution Algorithm, Faisal Manour Altarazi
Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations
Project scheduling is a tool that manages the work and resources associated with delivering a project on time. Project scheduling is important to organize, keep track of the finished and in-progress tasks and manage the quality of work delivered. However, many problems arise during project scheduling. Minimizing project duration is the primary objective. Project cost is also a critical matter, but there will always be a trade off between project time and cost (Ghoddousiet et al., 2013), so scheduling activities can be challenging due to precedence activities, resources, and execution modes. Schedule reduction is heavily dependent on the availability of …

Mechanical and Materials Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations
Animals dynamically adapt to varying terrain and small perturbations with remarkable ease. These adaptations arise from complex interactions between the environment and biomechanical and neural components of the animal’s body and nervous system. Research into mammalian locomotion has resulted in several neural and neuro-mechanical models, some of which have been tested in simulation, but few “synthetic nervous systems” have been implemented in physical hardware models of animal systems. One reason is that the implementation into a physical system is not straightforward. For example, it is difficult to make robotic actuators and sensors that model those in the animal. Therefore, even …
An Experimental Investigation Of Wing-Tip Vortex Decay In Turbulence, Hai G. Ghimire, Sean C. C. Bailey
An Experimental Investigation Of Wing-Tip Vortex Decay In Turbulence, Hai G. Ghimire, Sean C. C. Bailey
Mechanical Engineering Faculty Publications
Particle image velocimetry measurements were conducted for a wing-tip vortex decaying in free-stream turbulence. The vortex exhibited stochastic collapse with free-stream turbulence present, with the breakdown initiating earlier for higher levels of turbulence. An increased rate of decay of the vortex tangential velocity was also observed, increasing with increasing free-stream turbulence. The decay of the vortex tangential velocity without the free-stream turbulence was well represented by viscous diffusion, resulting in an increase in the core radius and decrease in the peak tangential velocity. With the addition of free-stream turbulence, the rate of decay of the peak tangential velocity of the …
Reasoning Strategies In The Context Of Engineering Design With Everyday Materials, Marcelo Worsley, Paulo Blikstein
Reasoning Strategies In The Context Of Engineering Design With Everyday Materials, Marcelo Worsley, Paulo Blikstein
Journal of Pre-College Engineering Education Research (J-PEER)
‘‘Making’’ represents an increasingly popular label for describing a form of engineering design. While making is growing in popularity, there are still open questions about the strategies that students are using in these activities. Assessing and improving learning in making/ engineering design contexts require that we have a better understanding of where students’ ideas are coming from and a better way to characterize student progress in open-ended learning environments. In this article, we use a qualitative analysis of students’ responses (N = 13) in order to identify the origins of their ideas. Four strategies emerged from this analysis: unexplained …

Fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEVs) use hydrogen as fuel and exhaust only water and heat. They provide driving ranges and fueling times comparable to gasoline vehicles. Despite the advantages, FCEVs have been in and out of the spot light of the auto industry for the past several decades. As FCEVs finally moved from concept demonstration to commercialization in 2015, it is critical to analyze the opportunities and challenges this technology brings. This project placed emphasis on four areas: (1) Analysis of the development of FCEVs from a historic and technology point of view; (2) analysis of hydrogen fueling station infrastructure …
Energy From Thin Air: Compressed Air Power Harvesting Systems, Zachary Sadler, Matthew Jones
Energy From Thin Air: Compressed Air Power Harvesting Systems, Zachary Sadler, Matthew Jones
Journal of Undergraduate Research
Energy is an important resource within the world we live. The demand for power requires new energy resources. Much of the power that is generated is eventually wasted in the form of waste heat. As much as 435 GW of energy is transferred from virtually all energy conversion devices and processes to the atmosphere as wasted heat [1]. Converting as much as one percent of this waste heat into electrical power would eliminate the need for 18 average size (236 MW) [2] coal red power plants. A significant portion of this waste heat production is due to air compression …
Effects Of Microstructure And Alloy Concentration On The Corrosion And Tribocorrosion Resistance Of Al-Mn And We43 Mg Alloys, Hesham Y. Saleh Mraied
Effects Of Microstructure And Alloy Concentration On The Corrosion And Tribocorrosion Resistance Of Al-Mn And We43 Mg Alloys, Hesham Y. Saleh Mraied
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The design of new engineering materials resistant to both wear damage and corrosion degradation becomes increasingly demanding in complex service conditions. Unfortunately, there is typically a tradeoff between wear and corrosion resistance, even for important passive metals such as Al alloys. This is because the presence of precipitates hardens the material but at the same time lead to unfavorable galvanic coupling between the precipitates and the matrix, resulting in accelerated corrosion. This work showed that Al (or Mg) supersaturated solid solution formed using non-equilibrium methods exhibited enhanced corrosion resistance without compromising strength. For Al, alloying with Mn up to ~ …

This paper builds on the previously developed product sustainability index (ProdSI) and process sustainability index (ProcSI), and presents a framework for sustainable manufacturing performance evaluation at the systems level. The framework is then used to propose a comprehensive set of metrics for the enterprise level following a five-stage metrics hierarchy (individual metrics, sub-clusters, clusters, sub-index and index). The 6R concept (reduce, reuse, recycle, recover, redesign and remanufacture), total life-cycle emphasis, and triple bottom line (TBL) are considered for selecting relevant metrics. Finally, the metrics are integrated to develop an index for enterprise level sustainability assessment and …

Simulation Of Hemiparetic Function Using A Knee Orthosis With Variable Impedance And A Proprioception Interference Apparatus, Christina-Anne Kathleen Lahiff
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Individuals with stroke have neuromuscular weakness or paralysis on one side of the body caused by some muscles disengaging and overexciting other muscles. Hyperextension of the knee joint and complete lack of plantar flexion of the ankle joint are common symptoms of stroke. This thesis encompasses the simulation of hemiparetic function using both a knee orthosis with variable impedance, specifically in terms of stiffness and damping, and the Proprioception Interference Apparatus.
The section regarding the knee orthosis with variable impedance focuses on the creation and implementation of a small, lightweight, and adjustable orthotic device to be positioned around the knee …

Two-Phase Flow Pressure Drop In Superhydrophobic Channels, Kimberly A. Stevens, Julie Crockett, Daniel R. Maynes, Brian D. Iverson
Faculty Publications
Superhydrophobic surfaces have been shown to reduce drag in single-phase channel flow; however, little work has been done to characterize their drag-reducing ability found in two-phase flows. Adiabatic, airwater mixtures were used to explore the influence of hydrophobicity on two-phase flows and the hydrodynamics which might be present in flow condensation environments. Pressure drop measurements in a rectangular channel with one superhydrophobic wall (cross-section approximately 0.37 x 10 mm) and three transparent hydrophilic walls were obtained. Data for air/water mixtures with superficial Reynolds numbers ranging from 22–215 and 55–220, respectively, were obtained for superhydrophobic surfaces with three different cavity fractions. …
Modeling And Computation Of The Maximum Braking Energy Speed For Transport Category Airplanes, Nihad E. Daidzic
Modeling And Computation Of The Maximum Braking Energy Speed For Transport Category Airplanes, Nihad E. Daidzic
Journal of Aviation Technology and Engineering
Transport-category or FAR/CS 25 certified airplanes may occasionally become braking energy capacity limited. Such limitation may exist when heavy airplanes are departing airports at high-density altitudes, on relatively long runways, and/or possibly with some tailwind component. A maximum braking energy VMBE speed exists which may limit the maximum allowable takeoff decision/action speed V1. The ever-existing possibility of high-speed rejected takeoff in such conditions may also limit the airplane gross weight for declared available distances. To gain deeper insights and acquire better understanding of the topic, a theoretical model of the maximum braking energy and the related VMBE speed for T-category …

The cell interior is a crowded chemical space, which limits the diffusion of molecules and organelles within the cytoplasm, affecting the rates of chemical reactions. We provide insight into the relationship between non-specific intracellular diffusion and cytoskeletal integrity. Quantum dots entered the cell through microinjection and their spatial coordinates were captured by tracking their fluorescence signature as they diffused within the cell cytoplasm. Particle tracking revealed significant enhancement in the mobility of biocompatible quantum dots within fibrosarcoma cells versus their healthy counterparts, fibroblasts, as well as in actin destabilized fibroblasts versus untreated fibroblasts. Analyzing the displacement distributions provided insight into …

Studies of dislocation density evolution are fundamental to improved understanding in various areas of deformation mechanics. Recent advances in cross-correlation techniques, applied to EBSD data have particularly shed light on geometrically necessary dislocation (GND) behavior. However, the framework is relatively computationally expensive – patterns are typically saved from the EBSD scan and analyzed offline. A better understanding of the impact of EBSD pattern degradation, such as binning, compression, and various forms of noise, is vital to enable optimization of rapid and low cost GND analysis. This paper tackles the problem by setting up a set of simulated patterns that mimic …

Thomas Edison once said “I have not failed. I've just found 10,000 ways that won't work.” The Edisonian approach to materials development has been the gold standard for most of human history. However, advances in computational speeds and modeling techniques over the last couple of decades have enabled new model-driven approaches to materials development, as manifested in the Integrated Computational Materials Engineering (ICME) and Materials Genome Initiative (MGI) efforts. By designing and simulating new materials in a computational environment, we can dramatically cut down on the cost and time associated with the Edisonian approach to material development.
