Influence Of Metal Additives On Microstructure And Properties Of Amorphous Metal–Sioc Composites, Kaisheng Ming, Qing Su, Chao Gu, Dongyue Xie, Yongqiang Wang, Michael Nastasi, Jian Wang

Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Faculty Publications

Strong, ductile, and irradiation-tolerant structural materials are in urgent demand for improving the safety and efficiency of advanced nuclear reactors. Amorphous ceramics could be promising candidates for high irradiation tolerance due to thermal stability and lack of crystal defects. However, they are very brittle due to plastic flow instability. Here, we realized enhanced plasticity of amorphous ceramics through compositional and microstructural engineering. Two metal–amorphous ceramic composites, Fe-SiOC and Cu-SiOC, were fabricated by magnetron sputtering. Iron atoms are preferred to form uniformly distributed nano-sized Fe-rich amorphous clusters, while copper atoms grow non-uniformly distributed nano-crystalline Cu particles. The Fe-SiOC composite exhibits high …

Cavitation Number As A Function Of Disk Cavitator Radius: A Numerical Analysis Of Natural Supercavitation, Reid Prichard Apr 2019

Cavitation Number As A Function Of Disk Cavitator Radius: A Numerical Analysis Of Natural Supercavitation, Reid Prichard

Senior Honors Theses

Due to the greater viscosity and density of water compared to air, the maximum speed of underwater travel is severely limited compared to other methods of transportation. However, a technology called supercavitation – which uses a disk-shaped cavitator to envelop a vehicle in a bubble of steam – promises to greatly decrease skin friction drag. While a large cavitator enables the occurrence of supercavitation at low velocities, it adds substantial unnecessary drag at higher speeds. Based on CFD results, a relationship between cavitator diameter and cavitation number is developed, and it is substituted into an existing equation relating drag coefficient …

Less-Than-Lethal Self Defense Device With An Acoustic Element, Anthony Taibi

KSU Journey Honors College Capstones and Theses

This creative capstone project involves the conception, design, and creation of a less-than-lethal self defense device with an integrated sound board to control the acoustic element. Theoretically, this device is capable of deterring potential threats without causing any serious harm or any long-term damage. When starting this project, I was very focused on sonic warfare, and how to harness the power of ultrasonic and infrasonic sound waves to subdue to target; however, I concluded that using resonant frequencies to deter a human being is too dangerous, expensive, and can have negative effects for the user of the device if used …

Concrete Crack Detection And Monitoring Using A Capacitive Dense Sensor Array, Jin Yan, Austin Downey, Alessandro Cancelli, Simon Laflamme, An Chen, Jian Li, Filippo Ubertini

Faculty Publications

Cracks in concrete structures can be indicators of important damage and may significantly affect durability. Their timely identification can be used to ensure structural safety and guide on-time maintenance operations. Structural health monitoring solutions, such as strain gauges and fiber optics systems, have been proposed for the automatic monitoring of such cracks. However, these solutions become economically difficult to deploy when the surface under investigation is very large. This paper proposes to leverage a novel sensing skin for monitoring cracks in concrete structures. This sensing skin is constituted of a flexible electronic termed soft elastomeric capacitor, which detects a change …

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Publications

Digital Image Correlation (DIC) measures full-field strains by tracking displacements of a specimen using images taken before and after deformation. At high temperatures, materials emit light in the form of blackbody radiation, which can interfere with DIC images. To screen out that light, DIC has been recently adapted by using ultraviolet (UV) range cameras, lenses, and filters. Before now, UV-DIC had been demonstrated at the centimeter scale using commercially available UV lenses and filters. Commercial high-magnification lenses using visible light have also been used for DIC. However, there is currently no commercially available high-magnification lens that will allow images to …

The Influence Of Complex Thermal Treatment On Mechanical Properties Of Amorphous Materials, Nikolai V. Priezjev, Qing-Long Liu Apr 2019

The Influence Of Complex Thermal Treatment On Mechanical Properties Of Amorphous Materials, Nikolai V. Priezjev, Qing-Long Liu

Mechanical and Materials Engineering Faculty Publications

We study the effect of periodic, spatially uniform temperature variation on mechanical properties and structural relaxation of amorphous alloys using molecular dynamics simulations. The disordered material is modeled via a non-additive binary mixture, which is annealed from the liquid to the glassy state with various cooling rates and then either aged at constant temperature or subjected to thermal treatment. We found that in comparison to aged samples, thermal cycling with respect to a reference temperature of approximately half the glass transition temperature leads to more relaxed states with lower levels of potential energy. The largest energy decrease was observed for …

Water Walking As A New Mode Of Free Surface Skipping, Randy Craig Hurd, Jesse Belden, Allan F. Bower, Sean Holekamp, Michael A. Jandron, Tadd T. Truscott

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Publications

Deformable elastomeric spheres are evaluated experimentally as they skip multiple times over a lake surface. Some spheres are embedded with small inertial measurement units to measure the acceleration experienced during water surface impact. A model for multiple impact events shows good agreement between measured acceleration, number of skipping events and distanced traveled. The experiment reveals a new mode of skipping, “water walking”, which is observed for relatively soft spheres impacting at low impact angles. The mode occurs when the sphere gains significant angular velocity over the first several impacts, causing the sphere to maintain a deformed, oblong shape. The behavior …

Experimental Study Of Scour Around Monopile And Jacket-Type Offshore Wind Turbine Foundations, Hsin-Hung Chen

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

Wind turbines platforms and pillars on offshore wind farms are negatively affected by wave and current action. In Taiwan, the water depth of most planned wind turbine foundations is more than 15 m. At this water depth, scour around offshore wind turbine foundations is mainly subject to the ocean current, which causes damage or collapse of foundations. Therefore, this study focused on the influence of ocean current on the monopile and jacket-type foundations of offshore wind turbines. Hydraulic model experiments were conducted to investigate the maximum scour depth and range around pillars in these foundations. Under the effects of current, …

Direct Numerical Simulation Of Incompressible Spatially Developing Turbulent Mixing Layers, Juan Diego Colmenares Fernandez

Mechanical Engineering ETDs

Turbulent mixing layers are a canonical free shear flow in which two parallel fluid streams of different velocities mix at their interface. Understanding spatial development of a turbulent mixing layer is essential for various engineering applications. However, multiple factors affect physics of this flow, making it difficult to reproduce results in experiments and simulations. The current study investigates sensitivity of direct numerical simulation (DNS) of such a flow to computational parameters. In particular, effects of the computational domain dimensions, grid refinement, thickness of the splitter plate, and the laminar boundary layer characteristics at the splitter plate trailing edge are considered. …

Physical Constraints On Accuracy And Persistence During Breast Cancer Cell Chemotaxis, Julien Varennes, Hye-Ran Moon, Soutick Saha, Andrew Mugler, Bumsoo Han

Purdue University Libraries Open Access Publishing Fund

Directed cell motion in response to an external chemical gradient occurs in many biological phenomena such as wound healing, angiogenesis, and cancer metastasis. Chemotaxis is often characterized by the accuracy, persistence, and speed of cell motion, but whether any of these quantities is physically constrained by the others is poorly understood. Using a combination of theory, simulations, and 3D chemotaxis assays on single metastatic breast cancer cells, we investigate the links among these different aspects of chemotactic performance. In particular, we observe in both experiments and simulations that the chemotactic accuracy, but not the persistence or speed, increases with the …

Gaussian Process Regression Applied To Marine Energy Turbulent Source Tuning Via Metamodel Machine Learning Optimization, Sterling Olson Apr 2019

Gaussian Process Regression Applied To Marine Energy Turbulent Source Tuning Via Metamodel Machine Learning Optimization, Sterling Olson

Mechanical Engineering ETDs

Converting energy from the currents found within tidal channels, open ocean, rivers, and canals is a promising yet untapped source of renewable energy. In order to permit current energy converters for installation in the environment, the CECs must be shown to non-negatively impact the environment. While developing these model increased utility may be gained if researchers may optimize mechanical power while constraining environmental effects. Surrogate models have garnered interest as optimization tools because they maximize the utility of expensive information by building predictive models in place of computational or experimentally expensive model runs. Marine hydrokinetic current energy converters require large-domain …

A Discrete Curvature Estimation Based Low-Distortion Adaptive Savitzky-Golay Filter For Ecg Denoising, Hui Huang, Shiyan Hu, Ye Sun

Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Publications

Electrocardiogram (ECG) sensing is an important application for the diagnosis of cardiovascular diseases. Recently, driven by the emerging technology of wearable electronics, massive wearable ECG sensors are developed, which however brings additional sources of noise contamination on ECG signals from these wearable ECG sensors. In this paper, we propose a new low-distortion adaptive Savitzky-Golay (LDASG) filtering method for ECG denoising based on discrete curvature estimation, which demonstrates better performance than the state of the art of ECG denoising. The standard Savitzky-Golay (SG) filter has a remarkable performance of data smoothing. However, it lacks adaptability to signal variations and thus often …
