Building heating in the Arctic is extremely energy intensive. The cold climate of northern Greenland requires heating year-round. Qaanaaq, the northernmost village in Greenland, has 10,128 average annual heating degree days, in Celsius. Current heating relies on fossil fuels, often from an oil boiler or from diesel-powered district heating. Electrospinning is utilized to fabricate catalytic nanofiber scaffold for biocrude upgrading in hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) following computational studies suggesting the need for nano-catalysts for efficient HDO conversion and selectivity. Here, Pt-TiO2 nanofibers are fabricated through electrospinning, followed by wet impregnation with a heteropoly acid (HPA), tungstosilicic acid. Intensive heat treatments were incorporated during and after processes to obtain a HPA doped Pt-TiO2 nano-catalyst. Catalytic HDO was performed in a batch reactor with phenol as the raw biocrude dissolved in hexadecane. The need to further develop solar cell technology, particularly on dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs), drives absorption studies of various chemical species. In this study, absorbance analysis of methyl orange (MO) dye was performed using the adapted and modified photoresistor-based photometer of Adams-McNichol et al. [1]. The research aims to improve the stability of the reference setup, while maintaining the accuracy of absorbance results it yields. The methodology includes photometer fabrication, MO dye sample preparation, and the evaluation of MO dye's molar absorptivity in an aqueous solution. Renewable energy sources are interfaced with the electrical grid using power electronic inverters. These inverter-interfaced resources have been deployed for nearly 20 years. Still, NERC only recently highlighted the vast gap between the actual behavior of these inverters during power system transients and those observed in simulations. Simulation models need significant improvements, mainly for developing accurate inverter current controls, phase-locked loops, and fault response during different power priority modes. Solid oxide electrolysis cell (SOEC) is an efficient and clean energy conversion technology that can utilize electricity obtained from renewable resources, such as solar, wind, and geothermal energy to electrolyze water and produce hydrogen. The conversion of abundant intermittent energy to hydrogen energy would facilitate the efficient utilization of energy resources. SOEC is an all-ceramic electrochemical cell that operates in the intermediate to high temperature range of 500–750 ℃. This study presents a flexible sensor/harvester device to be used in both electromagnetic sensing and energy harvesting applications for smart grids. When a current passes through a wire, the sensor detects the magnetic field created by that current. The sensor magnet interacts with the wire magnetic field resulting in a transfer of energy through the piezoelectric cantilever. Piezoelectric, conductive, magnetic, and magnetostrictive composite thin films were prepared to fabricate this device.

Many studies investigating the short-term variations associated with the power output from wind turbine generators utilise simulated or modelled data in the analysis. This current study uses short-term empirical data downloaded directly from operational wind turbines via electrical power quality meters. The empirical data shows that the short-term variations (one-second or sub-one-second timeframe) occur continuously over most of the power output range. A novel name is proposed, the Geeth Effect, for this variability phenomenon. A low-power delay-locked loop (DLL)-based frequency multiplier is presented. The multiplier is designed in 22 nm FDSOI and achieves 8× multiplication. The proposed DLL uses a new simple duty cycle correction circuit and is XOR logic-based for frequency multiplication. Current starved delay cells are used to make the circuit power efficient. The circuit uses three 2× stages instead of an edge combiner to achieve 8× multiplication, thus requiring far less power and chip area as compared to conventional phase-locked loop (PLL) circuits. A novel parallelizable probabilistic approach to model eddy currents in AC electromagnets is presented in this research. Consequently, power loss associated with the formation of these eddy currents is estimated and validated using experimental data. Furthermore, predicting the effect of ferromagnetic alternating field enhancement on power loss in the source excitation winding has been an active area of research. Unlike a stationary field, an alternating sinusoidal field diffuses partially into the ferromagnetic material leading to a predictably sub-optimal field enhancement. This project builds upon the prototyping of a microgrid-inspired power distribution architecture for electric vehicles (EVs). The efficacy of this prototype aims to inform a full-scale power distribution system that charges an EV battery, supports the electric grid with important ancillary services, performs peer-to-peer EV charging, and works in conjunction with other AC and DC sources and loads. This dissertation presents and evaluates model-free methodologies to process Phasor Measurement Unit (PMU) data. Model-based PMU applications require knowledge of the system topology, most frequently the system admittance matrix. For large systems, the admittance matrix, or other system parameters, can be time-consuming to integrate into supporting PMU applications. These data sources are often sensitive and can require permissions to access, delaying the implementation of model-based approaches. This dissertation focuses on evaluating individual model-free applications to efficiently perform functions of interest to system operators for real-time situational awareness.
