The increasing deployment of distributed solar and energy storage systems has created the need for integrated power converters that can efficiently manage photovoltaic (PV) generation, battery energy storage, and grid-tied AC output. This thesis presents the implementation and validation of a 5kW non-isolated Three-Port Converter (TPC) adapted for residential solar applications. The converter consolidates three power stage into a high-frequency, compact architecture: a unidirectional boost converter for PV input, a bidirectional interleaved buck-boost converter for battery energy storage, and a configurable DC/AC inverter for 120Vac single-phase output. High frequency Dual Active Bridge (DAB) converters have become a key enabling technology in medium- and high-power applications such as renewable energy integration, electric vehicle fast charging, and emerging DC power distribution systems. However, when operating at high power and high frequency, DAB converters face critical challenges including limited soft-switching range, uneven semiconductor loss distribution, deadtime-induced resonance, switching-frequency constraints of wide-bandgap (WBG) devices, and transformer DC bias during dynamic transitions. This paper analyzes the performance of PI, LQR, and H∞ controllers for the regulation of a bidirectional buck boost converter in electric vehicle systems. To get the system state space equations, a continuous conduction average model is linearized. For analysis a PI controller will be used as baseline, the LQR controller will be used to improve transient response, and the H∞ controller will be used for the system robustness and disturbance rejection. The expansion of solar photovoltaic energy infrastructure is transforming landscapes worldwide. Increasingly, facilities are planted with native vegetation, yet how vegetation characteristics and landscape variables shape wildlife communities in solar facilities remains poorly understood. Because avian populations have been in decline and are sensitive to habitat changes, understanding how solar facilities influence avian communities is important. The adoption of rooftop photovoltaic (PV) systems can create upward pressure on retail electricity rates as utilities are forced to spread their fixed costs of generation and transmission across a smaller customer base. Since high-income households are more likely to purchase PV systems, low-income households may be disproportionately impacted by these rate increases. Using a novel combination of agent-based computational economic modeling and a choice experiment of rooftop solar adoption, we show how this pecuniary externality between low- and high-income customers increases low-income electricity bills by 10% in an area with some of the highest poverty rates in the United …

Lithium metal anodes, with a theoretical capacity of up to 3860 mAh·g−1, are regarded as the cornerstone for developing next-generation high-energy-density batteries. However, several key challenges hinder their practical applications, including dendrite formation, unstable solid electrolyte interphase (SEI), side reactions with electrolytes, and associated safety risks. This paper proposes an advanced strategy for managing multiple battery energy storage systems (BESS) to enhance frequency support during contingencies. A novel deep reinforcement learning (DRL) framework based on a guided surrogate-gradient-based evolutionary strategy (GSES) was developed to dynamically regulate BESS outputs for rapid power injection or absorption. This approach effectively mitigates the rate of change of frequency (ROCOF) and stabilizes the system frequency under varying operating conditions. Parallel computing techniques are employed to accelerate training and ensure robust performance. Given the significant challenges of conventional power systems, including high emissions and operational costs, transitioning to microgrids (MGs) is increasingly critical. This paper presents a comprehensive evaluation of three energy management strategies for a grid-connected, heat-electricity integrated MG: (i) a base case without storage, (ii) a battery-based energy storage system (B-BESS), and (iii) a hydrogenbased energy storage system (H-BESS) comprising an electrolyzer (ELC), hydrogen tank (HT), and fuel cell (FC). This project will develop an analog computing circuit that can accelerate power system simulations used for grid interconnection studies. The project will leverage analog computing to create a specialized circuit capable of simulating large-scale power networks with detailed models of power electronics-based loads, such as those found in data centers and manufacturing plants. The weak adsorption energy of oxygen-containing intermediates on Co center leads to a considerable performance disparity between Co-N-C and costly Pt benchmark in catalyzing oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). In this work, we strategically engineer the active site structure of Co-N-C via B substitution, which is accomplished by the pyrolysis of ammonium borate. During this process, the in-situ generated NH3 gas plays a critical role in creating surface defects and boron atoms substituting nitrogen atoms in the carbon structure. The unavailability of high-performance and cost-effective electrocatalysts has impeded the large-scale deployment of alkaline water electrolyzers. Professor Zidong Wei’s group has focused on resolving critical challenges in industrial alkaline electrolysis, particularly elucidating hydrogen and oxygen evolution reaction (HER/OER) mechanisms while addressing the persistent activity-stability trade-off. This review summarizes their decade-long progress in developing advanced electrodes, analyzing the origins of sluggish alkaline HER kinetics and OER stability limitations. Professor Wei proposes a unifying “12345 Principle” as an optimization framework.
